PS3's two-week sales figures surge 135 percent

Console maker sees significant increase in US sales following $100 price reduction.

With the $100 price drop of Sony's discontinued 60GB PlayStation 3 now in the books, many industry-watchers are eagerly awaiting July's hardware sales figures from the stat-tracking NPD Group. While those official numbers won't be available until August, a few analysts have already weighed in on the console's prospects, stating that while it was a good first step, the price cut alone won't be enough to stimulate sales for Sony's much-maligned console.

Looking to put the naysayers to rest, Sony sends word today that since the PS3's price cut on July 9, the console has received a 135 percent sales uptick at the company's top five retail partners in the US, based on its own preliminary data. Additionally, Sony's entire PlayStation hardware lineup has seen a 161 percent spike, software is up 15 percent, and accessories have risen 60 percent since the announcement two weeks ago.

In some ways a bigger win for the company, Sony also touted NPD's most recent figures, which reflect a 21 percent surge in PS3 sales for June, well before the PS3's new $499 sticker tag went into effect. While still handily trailing both Nintendo's Wii and Microsoft's Xbox 360, the PS3's sales rose from around 82,000 in May to around 98,500 systems in June, according to NPD.

According to Sony Computer Entertainment of America president and CEO Jack Tretton, "This jump in sales bodes very well for us heading into the fall as we launch an impressive arsenal of hardware and software, leading off with the new 80GB PS3 in August along with the unveiling of highly anticipated games such as Lair and Warhawk. That will be followed by Heavenly Sword in September and six more exclusive first-party PS3 games in October, including Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction."

Some of you are too impatient. Your still asking for price cuts but how many times have Sony now reduced the PS3's price tag since launch?

Certain people on this forum seriously need to consider getting jobs. Not sponging off their parents all the time.

Actually, Sams right. You don't add the percentages together. They had like 82,000 one month, then sold 93,000 the next, so it wouldn't be 175,000, I think... Anywho, Racthet and Clank is why I'm getting a PS3. Furry Rat And Lovable Metal Sidekick FOREVER! Uh, FRALMSF!

    No Sam

    100% PLUS an INCREASE of 135% = 235%
    i.e. 235% of a euro is 2 euro and 35 cent

shady_825 - "An increase of 135% means twice the original amount plus the 35%"
    .
100% of one dollar is one dollar. 135% of one dollar is a dollar and thirty five cents not two dollars and thirty five cents. To turn a percent back into a real number you move the decimal two places to the left. 100% is the same as 1, so 135% is the same as 1.35

Yeah, I know this is a late reply, but it's good to know that there was a jump in sales. Hopefully, Sony will lower the price of the 80GB model by Christmas.

Surge means suddden increase. An increase of 135% means twice the original amount plus the 35%. if they used to sell 100 consoles a week, this surge puts them at 235 consoles a week (EXTREMELY HYPOTHETICAL EXAMPLE!).

  • Erik729

    Posted Jul 30, 2007 2:52 pm GMT

Lamprey, I believe "surge 135%" means they sold what they usually do, plus 35 percent of that....not double.

TAE- Why do you people feel the need to defend your favorite companies? In all honesty, do you think they would do the same for you? Nintendo, MS, and Sony are all concerned about one thing: the bottom line. Why would you so whole-heartedly defend a corporation?

Granted you can like one system more than the others, but would you really want ONLY (insert your favorite brand) to rule the world? Competition brings about innovation and better products. Microsoft would be nothing without Sony and Nintendo to compete with, and vise versa.

When you argue about what system is best and become a "fanboy" you are doing nothing but making the heads of corporations happier because you are adamant about giving them money and cursing out those who DON'T give them money. You're fighting on the front lines for huge businesses that profit off of your fanboyism.

Every system out right now has a lot to offer. This is a great time to be a gamer. Everyone should just chill out and enjoy the hell out of every system they can.

i knight you "the kind of gamer everyone should be like"

    TAEnemy, I like your style.

Why did we get the Wii? Because Microsoft and Sony kicked Gamecube's little behind. Why will we continue to get all sorts of new products that push the envelope? Because it's all about the money - almost everything is. And when it's 1-on-1-on1, it only gets better.

Ryusennin - So Microsoft and Nintendo are perfect companies? Hmm...Microsoft who kept quiet about their defective hardware for over a year so anyone who bought one suffered from failures.

And nintendo, who suggest they offer innovation but really I've yet to see a game worthy of any attention on the wii. I can control things with a stick? Its irrelevant if the gameplay isn't any good. The PS3 does in fact have good games, but it depends on what you like. I'm pretty sure many many people think the Wii has some awesome games, but thats their opinion. But to suggest the PS3 has no decent games and Sony should die is a little extreme; You forget Nintendo really didnt have a decent console out since the SNES but I bet your love for them didn't fade.

So PS3 sales "surge 135 percent"? So that means that that PS3 sales have more than doubled... unless someone didn't pay attention in math, and meant to say "surge 35 percent". Oh well, the math seems right on the May to June "surge". Or maybe Sony just shipped some stuff out.

  • Ryusennin

    Posted Jul 25, 2007 4:06 pm GMT

You know... I want to love the PS3. It's a powerful system, and it could have been a great entertaining machine had its PS2 emulator been perfected like initially advertised (just imagine for a second Sony dropping support for legacy DVD, on the sole reason that "Blue Ray is the way to go").

Right now the PS3 is just a console with no game worthy of any attention, marketed by a dumb company that should really die a horrible death. I simply want Sony to go south by now. They remind me of Sega (which ongoing activity proves there's really no justice in the game business).

torres_unix- Games? What games? I have the wii and the two games that I bought sucked. Zelda did not come close to the the n64 organal and I found the control set up to be annoying. Why can't wii fans just be happy that it's a gimmick and it's selling. How is repacking a gamecube innovative?

  • MM_aka_Azu

How is blu-ray and media capabilites a marketing gimmick... WiiFit is a marketing gimmick if anything...

An of course the 360 has more games, its been out for a year earlier... do you remember what the ps2 game lineup was when xbox first launched? Point proven.

condemned100, obviously the big N got that right - games and innovation are what's making the Wii go through the roof (not to mention a $250
pricetag, even if it's a gamecube on steroids), not Blu-Ray, and
    not some marketing gimmick.

every system has they're own ups and downs, some perish some succeed. But the important thing to remember is that all 3 PS3,Xbox 360,and Wii are consoles and what do consoles do? play games and games is what sells a console not Sale Surges.

    Shut Up Please.

Now I may be a 360 fan and I truly do believe that the 360 is the better of the two hardwares, but I'm a video game fan first and for most, and I for one bought a PS3 two days ago, although I haven't gotten any games for it, I did enjoy some demos on the PSN, the ONLY reason I bought the game was for the possibility that MGS4 might not come to the 360 and LittleBigPlanet, if Lair is as good as people are hyping it up to be I might get that too.

Now I own all three consoles, but I still put the 360 as the best console to have, IT EASILY HAS THE BEST GAMES ON IT OUT OF ALL THREE SYSTEMS!! That's what makes it kick ass, and no I'm not talking about Halo.

Listen to the Xbox fanboys crying. By the way, wheres the 12 first party exclusives for xbox by the end of the year? also, wheres microsofts 1.8 Billion Dollars? Boys, stop pushing the 360, its useless failed hardware junk. PS3 might be expensive, but its got alot of technology and by the way, it hasen't broken enough consoles to feed the entirity of africa for a few generations. Turtoise and the Hair is all this is. If the 80 gig doesn't do well, they will have a price cut near the holidays. They can't afford another unsuccessful holiday and they've already stated they won't have multiple SKUs. At least that's what I see happening.

well lets see for 500.00 bucks you get the following with a PS3

    1)a 60g hard drive

2)Wi-Fi enable right out of the box

    3)bluetooth

    4)blue ray 5)HDMI PORT

    6)compact flash,SD,and memory stick slots.

I mean not even the Elite 360, (no offense to any 360 owners),has some of this features and it cost 480.00,and for 20 bucks more you"ll get more value with PS3,is that simple, later.
