Confirmed: No X07

After comments by Aaron Greenberg and Larry Hryb about the event getting cancelled this year, Microsoft goes on the record to confirm.

Yesterday the Internet was awash with rumours that Microsoft's annual European event, X0, would not be held this year. Two Microsoft employees, Xbox Live marketing manager Aaron Greenberg and director of programming Larry Hyrb, both suggested that there wasn't going to be an X07. Now Microsoft has officially confirmed the news.

The official statement from the company is as follows: "I can confirm that we are not hosting an X0 event this year. We review how we demonstrate our fantastic games and gaming experiences every year, and this year we have decided to highlight blockbusters like Forza Motorsport 2, BioShock, Mass Effect, and of course Halo 3 on an individual basis rather than have one large event."

In years past, Microsoft has held the event in late September. As it stands, Microsoft already has a major event going on for that time frame this year with the launch of Halo 3 on September 25.

The company refused to comment on whether or not it would be holding a UK-based event this year in lieu of the pan-European X0.

quite a few people say that this is the downfall of microsoft. they are still leading the industry. they fixed a huge problem by sacraficing something that can be redeamed over time, and not having x0 this year will only keep them in the lead. it does suck though, because they usually anounce huge exclusives at the event. maybe they will anounce them some other way.

So halo takes away their event and maybe the sales of their other games that are releasing around the launch of halo ? Either halo is doing a lot of bad things to MS or they can't hold the event because of their loss of money. Maybe ms is counting on halo too much?

well with the recent loss of over a billion, i don't blame them for cancelling such a high cost event.

I think Microsoft is putting too much hype into Halo 3. I mean, sure, it is going to sell God knows how may games, but they should be showing all of their products.

I don't think this is a move that's going to necessarily hurt Microsoft, but I think hosting the European event could have helped them sell more X360s for this year. Part of their entire strategy for the year has been to obtain the strongest lineup of games in the last months of 2007 to take advantage of fourth quarter sales (when 1/2 of all game industry sales take place). I do think Halo3 will bring the X360 a lot of attention, but I also think bringing more attention to the lineup can help them out even more.

Anyhow, I think Microsoft has done a lot to strategize a strong fourth quarter, so I guess the rest is up to chance. It'll be interesting to see how the undying demand for the Wii will factor into 4Q sales, or whether the PS3 can make a comeback this Xmas.

So are they going to have all these mini events centered around their game releases? How is that going to work exactly? Aren't they going to have to eventually showcase all of their goodies at an event sooner or later.

  • DontEatCream

    Posted Jul 20, 2007 12:44 pm PT

Since when did anyone care about X0? The fact that they're not having one this year is good; that means M$ can focus more manpower and money on other, more important things.

Well put AngelPhoenix. I have a 360 now, but I'm just waiting for the PS3 to get some really good games, and it looks like that's starting to happen. Hooray for Sony! Give me a reason to get your system!

Of course MS is winning...it's MS...it's Bill Gates...they have like infinite money. PS3 is trying to cater to the most hardcore and demanding of gamers, not the people who play mostly action/adventure games and FPS, finish them in less than a week, and want the next good game. It's quite true that PS3's lineup is garbage right now, but so was 360's when it first came out, but it's been out over a year now. PS3 is approaching it's first year and guess what? Lair, Heavenly Sword, Metal Gear Solid, Killzone 2....MS fanboys always pass off MS's fukc-ups, while smashing the PS3 for being a dead console. The devs are saying it's hard to makes games for the PS3; they said the same thing about the PS2 when it first came out, but it was ahead of Xbox, so by the time that came out, PS2 was on a roll. The reverse happened this time, that's all. I personally don't give a rats ass about console wars or whatever, the only real war right now is the one we're losing in Iraq. If PS3 gets 20-30 games in it's lifetime that I enjoy, that's good enough for me.

LOL...PS3 is all about tomorrow...it's been like that for years now. They still haven't actually delivered on anything.

That's why MS is ahead and the longer it takes Sony to produce something the further behind they will be. Already PS3 fans have written off '07...12-months from now it will be better. And in the mean time more people will be playing more titles on the 360 while die-hard PS3 fans are waiting for it.

  • ctg867

    Posted Jul 20, 2007 12:14 pm PT

Wild guess, this has to do with the billion plus on the warranty thing. I love my 360 and all, it's also the only console I currently have (though I do own a PSP and a gaming ready PC), but if it wasn't for the fact that Microsoft makes billions every year, there would be no Xbox and it would of been done before the 360 was even conceived.

I'm sorry Xbox fanboys, but they only had one profitable quarter ever: the quarter that Halo 2 shipped in. I really doubt they will make money off the Xbox this or next year, and stuff like X07 will make that goal harder to achieve. Kind of disappointing, but if it means I can stop being over charged for everything Xbox related because they finally make money off it, then I'm fine with that.

  • Themilkman418

Does it really matter? 360 is still wining the console war.

OH and pablo sounds like some one is bitter that games like GTA and Saints Row are staying exclusivly for 360, amongst others.

Sony has a weak exclusive lineup why buy a PS3 when you can play the same game for the 360 cheaper?

Actually the real reason is that there isnt anything to have a show about. You already know Halo 3 is coming. What else is there for MS. Its too early for Halo 4 and Gears 2. Mean while, just days after an excellent E3 showing Sony announces a bunch of new titles for PS3 and shows game play for big games like MGS4 and White Knight. And TGS 07 is right around the corner. Oh im just messing with the fanboys 360 has good games coming. Ill just play them on my PC though

Individual events for titles is better then saving it all up for a specific timeframe.

I'd rather see 12 events over 12 months then cram it all into 1.
