Confirmed: No X07

After comments by Aaron Greenberg and Larry Hryb about the event getting cancelled this year, Microsoft goes on the record to confirm.

Yesterday the Internet was awash with rumours that Microsoft's annual European event, X0, would not be held this year. Two Microsoft employees, Xbox Live marketing manager Aaron Greenberg and director of programming Larry Hyrb, both suggested that there wasn't going to be an X07. Now Microsoft has officially confirmed the news.

The official statement from the company is as follows: "I can confirm that we are not hosting an X0 event this year. We review how we demonstrate our fantastic games and gaming experiences every year, and this year we have decided to highlight blockbusters like Forza Motorsport 2, BioShock, Mass Effect, and of course Halo 3 on an individual basis rather than have one large event."

In years past, Microsoft has held the event in late September. As it stands, Microsoft already has a major event going on for that time frame this year with the launch of Halo 3 on September 25.

The company refused to comment on whether or not it would be holding a UK-based event this year in lieu of the pan-European X0.

Oh well. I got pretty much all I needed from the games at E3. It still is kind of disappointing though. Last year's X07 was great.

Interesting that they would cancel an event for all games coming up in light of one major game. I know they didn't say that exactly but thats how it seems.

This may turn out to be one of the saddest periods in gaming over the last 10 years. MS and Sony can't seem to get their products working or selling, Nintendo is KILLING Sony in Japan, and one of the top selling products, the Wii, cannot be found in stores (believe me, I've looked everywhere in the metro-Chicago area, and I'm not camping out 6 hours before a store opens). Maybe I'm full of gloom-and-doom, but I feel very uneasy right now at where the industry might be headed in 2008. Still, trying to be "somewhat" optimistic....

the only thing i would expect from X0 this year was Halo Wars so no big deal.

Wow. E3 gets toned down, now X07 is cancelled. Hopefully the other foreign shows go as planned, Tokyo Game Show and Liepzig. This year is turning out to be lackluster for gaming events.

Those shows cost to much anyways and weve already heard of all the new games at E3. Halo 3 on the same date will be a nice make up!

I really don't understand why people like Halo.

    What's the appeal?
    A clumsy, weird sci-fi game...

Who cares? As long as there are great games to PLAY on 360 (or any console). I don't care if they use shows and events to promote them. To be honest I think these shows are pointless. Just release the games and if they are great games people will buy them without the needless hype for six months!!

who cares how many of us really would be at the show anyway? Plus all you news you can get from press releases,E3, and other show no big deal i think it's better for them to focus on halo 3,bioshock (can't wait),forza and the great mass effect all this year! Plus Too human and call of duty 4

Actually, this year they dont need X07, they already highlighted the awesome games which will come this winter. The best line-up in gaming history for a console.

  • Agreb91

    Posted Jul 20, 2007 9:34 am PT

I really don't care there is not X07. Halo 3 is coming out and there is no point.

  • PhoenixInferno

    Posted Jul 20, 2007 9:36 am PT

Its not the end of the world. There was no X04, but it came back for X05. It sounds like there are no major announcements they need to make - all the big games that are coming out this year we all know about, and anything they want to talk about for next year they can do at other events, TGS perhaps.

This was a business decision - at least partially motivated by the $1B+ USD charge to MSFT's E&D division.

Smart choice Microsoft--an X07 is completely pointless this year with all the amazing titles coming such as Halo 3, BioShock, GTA, and Mass Effect.

I agree with football_legend they showed what's in the pipeline at E3 and that's a serious amount of triple A game's on the way , i would'nt want to be releasing a game out round then so many big hitters , just one thing though......... where the hell are we to find the time to play them all lol

  • CamisadoBlue

    Posted Jul 20, 2007 9:53 am PT

Well seeing as they showed us pretty much everything at E3 this isn't such bad news... i wouldn't be suprised if this was them trying to tighten the purse strings to soften the blow from the $1 billion they are losing in repairs.

Other than the poor Europeans. Who cared over there about this, Microsoft might be hurting for cash to put on another event? Halo 3 is out so no one will notice.
