Confirmed: No X07

After comments by Aaron Greenberg and Larry Hryb about the event getting cancelled this year, Microsoft goes on the record to confirm.

Yesterday the Internet was awash with rumours that Microsoft's annual European event, X0, would not be held this year. Two Microsoft employees, Xbox Live marketing manager Aaron Greenberg and director of programming Larry Hyrb, both suggested that there wasn't going to be an X07. Now Microsoft has officially confirmed the news.

The official statement from the company is as follows: "I can confirm that we are not hosting an X0 event this year. We review how we demonstrate our fantastic games and gaming experiences every year, and this year we have decided to highlight blockbusters like Forza Motorsport 2, BioShock, Mass Effect, and of course Halo 3 on an individual basis rather than have one large event."

In years past, Microsoft has held the event in late September. As it stands, Microsoft already has a major event going on for that time frame this year with the launch of Halo 3 on September 25.

The company refused to comment on whether or not it would be holding a UK-based event this year in lieu of the pan-European X0.

From what I hear M$ spends alot of cash on this event and with the big loss it would only benefit them to skip it.

Microsoft had nothing new to announce at E3 (just lots of footage and demos for already announced games, as great as they may be), so there probably isn't much of anything to announce in September either. Also, given the heavy losses in their game division, it's probably wise for them to save money and skip it this year.

Exactly why PC gaming with ultimately always be the best, because its industry will always have more exposure to non-"blockbuster" titles. I'm afraid gaming will eventually be as ridiculously bloated as Hollywood is.

you know i love the Xbox haters out there .. on one hand saying microsoft had a rubbish e3 because all it showed off was a large collection of high quality titles due out this year .. then they say XO was canceled because they have no games to show ... what tosh !! What's actually happening is that they don't want to spend any more money when they are shelling out for all those repairs ! if 360 doesn't win the sales war this season it's one of 2 things 1> most game buyers are idiots who go for popular games and machines over quality. or

2> Microsoft stupidity extends onwards and they don't drop the price of the console .. people that want a 360 at the current price have already bought it.

Don't take videogames too seriously. and dont forget, whether mgs4 comes out for 360 or not, gaming is an industry, and the highest bidder gets the title.

It would of been nice to have an x07, and introduce their new presedent taking the stand.

But I think they don't really NEED an x07 this year, they have the biggest games lineup - and nearly everyone knows it. All chart topping hits previously, and the sequels (madden 08, gtaIV and halo 3) is enough to push the 360.

x07 is really for pushing new features of the 360 and some games. But seeming as they have already covered this - it seems right that they concentrate on the game at hand, without being all showman over it all trying to flaunt something out of nothing.

With madden, gtaIV and halo 3 - I think the 360 has one heck of an arsenal in its hands. So there is probably no need for an x07.
They may have an x08 to try and promote "life after halo 3" or something.

    LASTLY -

Gir777 - "The game has been confirmed exclusive for PS3 about 5 times now"

Ok, please QUOTE where it is ps3 exclusive, I would like to know. I haven't seen any concrete evidence of it being exclusive.
And as history proves - Not even water-tight contracts like resident evil 4 on the gamecube being exclusive are permanent.

The game has been confirmed exclusive for PS3 about 5 times now, most importantly from Microsoft itself, what more proof do you damn fanboys need?

After their only '07 E3 conference, X07 would have been the perfect place and time for them to boast about their '08 titles. MS may be focusing on this year just a little too much.

@Hashbrowns...for the most part conventions aren't aimed at gamers, they're aimed at retailers and media. We get the benefit of the information, but that's about it.

I think it's good that microsoft delays or cancels the event this year,of course they haven't stated that there won't be another X0 event in the future,so I don't think it's a big deal.Microsoft just doesn't want to waste money hyping up games in an event when those games already have huge hype behind them,so I think its a smart move to let the games build up the hype, save the event for next year,as well as some money.

Because conferences generate a ton of hype.

  • Hashbrowns

    Posted Jul 20, 2007 3:46 pm PT

Considering that a vast majority of gamers get their information online, conventions at some level seem like a real waste of time. Sure, they serve a retail purpose, but as for gamers, most of us are just waiting for the videos and demos to be put online or on LIVE Marketplace.

Does a conference itself really mean anything to us? For me, the E3 press conferences are practically void of value beyond the demos and trailers, both of which do not require a conference to exist. It seems that the conferences are just another thing to tolerate until the game content can finally be released to the public. Even if several thousand gamers could go to E3, millions will not. Why spend copious amounts of money on several thousand people, when you could digitally distribute content to millions for less?

The ESA needs to decide decisively whether E3 is directed at retailers who require graphs and dry statistical economic data, or directed toward selling games to consumers who want information about the games themselves, not the business behind them. Right now it's an awkward mixture of doing both, and doing them poorly.

  • Nawras

    Posted Jul 20, 2007 3:36 pm PT

I don't see a reason why the event should take place anyway - E3 was enough and it is a good choice to save up the expenses for something more important

I dont care if there's no X07. I have many great games coming out on the 360 in the coming year, and I'm very happy with my situation with my 360. Saving up for the Wii soon. As ChickenHounk911 kinda said, the Wii will have most sales because it's not a hardcore console. It's just something that people buy because it's refreshing, relaxing, and it exudes coolness.

  • MKHavoc

    Posted Jul 20, 2007 3:31 pm PT

This makes sense. With E3 being in July, why would they hold another event just a couple of months after it.

  • ChickenHounk911

    Posted Jul 20, 2007 3:21 pm PT

This is why I think the Wii will win. In the end it comes down to Family Oriented Fun... (not a fanboy, own all three systems and love them all) But C'mon this is getting ridiculous.

I feel as if Microsoft is giving up...lol. No X07, the whole red rings/warranty fiasco, Peter Moore leaving, Silicon Knights suing Epic Games (in which is over an engine used in two 360 titles), class action lawsuits, all this in a matter of maybe 2 weeks. Is MS trying to catch up with Sony in bad press?
