PS3 value pack dated for Australia

PS3 value pack to land in Australia on August 2; new PSP slated for September.

Sony Computer Entertainment Australia has confirmed that the PlayStation 3 value pack will be coming to Australia on August 2 for A$999 ($879). The announcement came at a PlayStation Australia media event held in Sydney last night.

The starter pack contains a 60GB PlayStation 3 console, two Sixaxis controllers, Resistance: Fall of Man, and MotorStorm--both of which have sold over a million units globally. No announcement about whether the 80GB PlayStation 3 will make it to Australia was made.

The PS3 value pack is being released only in Sony's PAL territories, with US consumers instead getting a price drop on the existing 60GB PS3s to $499. US consumers will also soon be able to purchase the 80GB model--which comes bundled with MotorStorm--for $599.

Managing director of Sony Computer Entertainment Australia and New Zealand Michael Ephraim also confirmed that the redesigned PlayStation Portable--model number PSP-2000--will be coming down under in early September. It will be available in Piano Black and Ceramic White. When asked whether the Star Wars: Battlefront PSP pack would reach our shores, he responded with, "[We are] still considering it."

TTDog: That's because they have to add a little value to sell them cos everyone knows Sony isn't XD Seriously though if they were just realistic enough to give a price cut and a value pack we'd all be better off. If they are actually giving us more for our money then why not just give us a price cut too since they'd save money then?

As before they announced this "value pack" the big game stores will offer there own version, some UK stores are offering a choice of 2 from 4 (mind you 3 of the 4 are racers.... PS3 has way too many FPS's and Racers), the same will probably happen in Aussieland.

why is motorstorm one of the games? :/ It just doesn't interest me at all.

Maybe I can talk someone into swapping that game with another when i finally buy mine in October.
Theres no game out now that interest me so I don't see any reason to buy a ps3 right now.

    Total Ripoff .....

    Typical Sony behaviour .....

Charging Aussies extra while the Americanos get it cheaper .....

Sony is stupid if it thinks no one will notice ....

No wonder the PS3 is floundering ....

    Pathetic.

my 360 broke and i swapped and sold and got a ps3 for $987 with resistance and f1 ce so im basically just missing a controller im getting motorstorm really cheap off ebay so im only missing out on an extra controller for 3 months worth of playing my ps3 and i only play it by myself anyway.

The PS3 in Oz is definitely a rip-off right now... sure the 2 controllers are nice but I don't want those 2 games. The whole exchange rate and unfair pricing in Oz is not new and has been going on for years so it ain't a surprise.
Right now, the PS3 doesn't offer anything special. Not many games, few quality games, Blu-Ray isn't that much better compared to DVD although I have a HDTV, and current multiplatform games tend to be much better on the 360 than the PS3 yet the PS3 is supposed to be a better console hardware/technological wise.
By the time the PS3 gets better games like the next Gran Turismo and Final Fantasy, the price of the console would probably be reasonable enough.
This mean I will most likely buy a PS3... probably in late 2008. A long wait, but I'm in no rush. The only console I've ever purchased was the PS1 back when it was about AU$500... I remember when it was AU$800.
By the way, Aussies don't drink Fosters...

we Aussies DON'T want a value pack!! we may have lots of sheeps but we are not sheeps. we want a price drop! why are we paying $999au ($879us) and now its called a value pack with games i or many others don't wanna play? maybe i know why theres no price drop; cos there are still hundreds of thousands of unsold units collecting dust. when all those are sold then we'll have a price cut. it may take years... and years... i don't wanna get ripped off now thats for sure

SirNicoli; you underneath me... the truth really hurts heh? you are getting ripped off for having games that are crapper compares to the 360? is there such thing as a better ps3 game than the 360? all i have seen and played on the ps3, they are all so and so. nothing thats on par or even great. the only games that are ok are those exclusives but they still seems slow and whats wrong with the frame rates? and why are most games run on 720p???? and they still have slow downs! why is Oblivian sucks on ps3 when its a year late? i know getting ripped off is a nasty feeling... i hate to be you

I would have rathered a PS3 price drop to keep it in line with the 360, then an extra controller and two free games.

    Posted Jul 21, 2007 10:08 pm PT

Because Sony is a Japanese company they need to pay import costs to ship their products outside Japan. They usually pay more to ship in europe then the us. Also their are norms inside each country that they have to keep effecting price.

If MS can do it then it seems there's no reason for me to cahnge until they deliver a real price cut.

XXgunslingerXX said: isnt it funny how microsoft charges $399 for american customers and €399 for europe and when sony charges $599 for american customers and €599 for europe sony is the bad guy and for some reason microsoft cares about its customers?

I say: Do you not realise the price difference? Microsoft charges £299 for UK and $399 for America so thats more equal, with VAT and higher costs I expect the UK to pay more but sony has a $300 difference so we are getting ripped off by them and when we want a price cut they give us a deal instead. If you don't give the customers what they want then they will be angry. I wouldn't by an Ipod if I was waiting for a price cut if they just threw a few extra songs in with it (and for the sake of cost arguments we'll say lots of songs). On another note this is not giving away the console it's just a cheap marketing strategy to sell more games (which will make them look good) and when you consider we were already being ripped off a bit better deal (monetarily but not fairly (considering people want a real price cut so they can choose games THEY want)) is not really sucha surprise but if you don't want the games the value pack is more of a sh*t pack.

Sick, PS3, 60GB harddrive, 2 controllers and 2 games. That's a lot of value, especially considering the prices of games and controllers. Sony are basically giving em away when u consider that a PS3 was originally selling for $1000 a piece with only 1 controller and no free games. Think about it.

The PS3 needs to drop to $300 to make anyone care. The only people I know that have a PS3 are hardcore gaming nerds (whom I like a whole lot!) who live at home, pay no rent, have no life, work at 7-11, blah, blah, blah.

I've been on the fence about buying a PS3 but after the E3 presentation i was willing to spent the $1000. In my eyes this kinda sweetens the deal. Its all just a matter of shopping around for the best price, since i'm sure people will have it cheaper than $999.

$879 USD for a garbage pack while $599 gets you an 80GB PS3 + 1game in the US.

That is dumb - you might as well import ?

    Dumb schmucks.

You think the UK is bad, check out the price of the X360 or PS3 in Mexico.

The 20GB 360 is $614 in Norway. The Elite will be somewhere around $750. PS3 60GB with 3 games (resistance, motorstorm & spiderman 3) & 2 controllers is $1000 now.

We've got good payment choices like paying after 3-9 months (cost $35) so the price doesn't scare us that much, but don't say that MS is cheap all over the world. We pay x2 for anything here.
In the long run, Wii is the most expencive with only the wiimote going for $122 and the nunchuck $70. Get a Wii ($480) with extra Wiimote & nunchuck ($192) and 3 games ($100 each = $300) and were at $972.
buy a 3rd controller for PS3 ($80) and Wii, the Wii is more expencive.

But like I said, we're used to it and it don't bother us so much anymore.

The people who are "surprised" about the high price need to get some macro-economic education; seriously, you guys know nothing of the rest of the world. Comparing the single product with another one at another country, but not even comparing with the rest of the products from that country.

"GrgSpunk EIGHT HUNDRED AND SEVENTY NINE DOLLARS?????

Christ, these guys in the PAL regions are getting ripped off. I mean, It'd be cheaper over here in the US/Japan region to buy every one of them individually! Assuming a 60 gig PS3 costs 600 dollars (and don't even get me started on the 100 dollar price cut), with both games adding up to roughly 100 dollars and an extra controller costs 40 dollars, the total cost would be somewhere around 740 dollars!"

Yeah, in the UK we are paying equivalent US $850

And yeah, everyone is annoyed at
    (a) the fact we're paying more - rip off!!
    (b) we didn't get the emotion engine for hardware backwards compat
    (c) the console was released to us after everywhere else

I'm a gamer not a fanboy either way, but one thing I've had to give MS a bit of credit for is that they have made some attempt to treat gamers equally around the world in game and console releases
