Wii widens Canadian sales gap

June game industry sales up 60 percent in the Great White North according to NPD; Nintendo's latest handily tops next-gen rivals.

Nintendo is on a roll in Canada. The Wii and Nintendo DS have turned the hardware sales each month into a two-horse race, with each of them often doubling up the sales of any other system on the market. June was no exception, according to retail sales figures the industry-tracking NPD Group released to GameSpot this week.

For the month, the Wii sold just over 53,000 units, with the DS trailing behind at 45,700 systems sold. Sony's PlayStation 2 and PlayStation Portable were next in line, with 21,000 and 18,500 sold, respectively. On the rest of the next-gen front, Microsoft's Xbox 360 moved 13,500 systems, while the PlayStation 3 sold through 6,500 units and was trumped by the Game Boy Advance; Nintendo's portable predecessor to the DS sold 8,800 systems.

The industry as a whole took in C$91.5 million ($87.7 million) for the month, a 60 percent jump over the C$57.2 million ($54.8 million) posted for June of 2006. That's in line with the industry's totals for the year-to-date, as Canadian retail game sales for the first six months of 2007 reached C$497.8 million ($477.2 million), up a little less than 61 percent from last year's first-half total of C$310 million ($297.2 million).

Hardware sales and accessory sales both nearly doubled for the month, with the former up 93 percent from the previous June to C$39.5 million ($37.9 million) and the latter up 96 percent to C$11.3 million ($10.8 million). Interestingly, the hardware growth came almost exclusively from the home systems. Console sales were up more than 197 percent for the month, while the portable system market was virtually flat.

Retail software of all kinds was up more than 31 percent, from C$31 million ($29.7 million) to C$40.7 million ($39 million). That growth was similarly skewed to the console sector, which jumped nearly 42 percent to C$28.9 million ($27.7 million), while handheld games grew less than 12 percent to reach C$11.8 million ($11.3 million). The best-selling software titles of the month are listed below.

Canada's top 10 best-selling games for June 2007:

1. Mario Party 8--Wii
2. Wii Play with Wii Remote--Wii
3. Pokémon Diamond--DS
4. Value Pack (included games vary)--Xbox
5. Forza Motorsport 2--Xbox 360
6. Pokémon Pearl--DS
7. Guitar Hero II with guitar--Xbox 360
8. Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition--Wii
9. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess--Wii
10. Super Paper Mario--Wii

I have to admit I am a HUGE sony fan. I had an XBOX for a while but I didn't really like it, especially when microsoft pretty much killed it after the 360 started selling like crazy. I mean look at the top of this page on the system selections, XBOX isn't even on there. Whereas the PS2 is. Anyway this does have a point, I have a PS2 and love it (RE4, GH2 and GOW2 are awesome) but I don't see myself getting a PS3. C$660 as a married working student is just not feasible (you ever try talking your partner into letting you spend $600+ on some non-neccesity, impossible). So the Wii is definitely on my horizon (virtual console, i grew up with the 8 bit NES, can't wait to play Zelda 2 on it). Plus my wife really likes the wii sports which is definitely a bonusl.

That is soo sad when a system with all of 2 games worth playing continues to outsell the consoles with plenty of good games. I'd rather go back to my n64 than ever play gamecube or Wii again...what happened to you nintendo? you used to be the cats ass of videogaming... Guess it's a good thing i jumped on the microsoft bandwagon

I live in Canada. I invited my friend over, and we played Mario Party 8 for the Wii. I decided not to get MP8.

And I didn't exactly love TP, either. It just made me wanna go play OoT, which I have for the N64 console.

GBA beats PS3 lol, but for good reason. The GBA has 3 versions that range from 40-70$ new where as the PS3 has its 500$ (atm price) and was 600$ before pricecut. Also PS3 games are 40+new where as GBA games are easy to get used for 10$ and there are more of them by a large factor. So there you have it.

"Sure, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess been out for a while, but Resident Evil 4 Wii edition at least should be selling more... At least if you can tell from the the list, the Demographics of the gamers that are buying these games are mostly kids... Nintendo should be proud of their success in Canada. "

RE4 was release on June 19, thats probably why its not higher on the list. I had to go to 3 best buys and 2 eb games to finally track down a copy. Most of the people that I know who own a wii are in the 20's.

Well i didnt really like Mario Party 8, but i did love Paper Mario, and well for the DS POKEMON, for everyone who is saying they cant see why the Wii is doing so well. Well Alot of people just like the games, there alot of fun, and i know some of my older friends just bought it for the VC. They want to play the games the used to. Im not saying you shouldnt buy another system, cause i did, ((PS3)) Im just sayin i know why the Wii is selling more, i mean right now its games are better. And i honestly think that the Games that are coming out later this year are going to kick some ARS. I mean Mario Galexy, hopefully that will be as good or better as Mario 64. Metroid Prime 3, sorry but i love samus.....she's hott, and she kicks ars...what more do you need in a woman. SuperSmashBros. Brawl......I dont care what anyone says that will probably be the best fighting game ever. So yeah i see why people would buy the wii, and just wait for those games.....THen again i agree Wii play wasnt a good game in my opinion, i have it, but i dont really play it much, i bet people Buy it for the Wii-Mote. Last but not least GO NINTENDO, im backing you the entire way.
