PS3 MGS Online in works, Portable Ops expanded

Inspired by Subsistence's online play, Kojima Productions is working on a similar mode for the next-generation console; PSP game gets new add-on pack.
By Hirohiko Niizumi, GameSpot
Posted Jul 17, 2007 5:29 pm PT

TOKYO--Today, after ending a live demonstration of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots at the PlayStation Premiere 2007 event, legendary game producer Hideo Kojima revealed two new projects.

First, Kojima expressed satisfaction with the online mode included in the well-received Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence. It turns out that Subsistence's online functionality was such a success that Kojima's team is apparently working on a successor. While he didn't elaborate, the famed designer did confirm that a similar Metal Gear Solid online game is in development for the PS3. He did say that details on the upcoming game will be unveiled during Metal Gear's 20th anniversary party next week, with real-time demonstrations.

Kojima then closed his presentation with a trailer for Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops Plus, an expansion to the well-received PlayStation Portable game Portable Ops. The add-on will feature new characters, numerous missions, new gameplay and modes, tutorials for beginners, and a new single-player mode. The trailer also hinted that there are some other additions that are being kept secret for the time being.

Portable Ops Plus is slated for release in Japan on September 20, the same date as the new, video-out PSP. The game will be available in two versions: an à la carte version with just the expansion for 2,400 yen ($20), and a deluxe package that includes the original Portable Ops for 4,300 yen ($35). No North American or European release information has been made available.

New additions to the metal gear solid legacy are always welcome in my books
But being an Australian resident, i know all too well from past experiences from the japan to pal gaps that we have an entire re bundle of portable ops and these additions in our books rather then an expansion
Not to be negative though, she will be mine

OMG! How did I miss these new, this rocks! I love Portable Ops and the online mode. But I thought in the first news about MGS4 said it was included with online mode? But - we've heard nothing about that for years.

Pops-online mode is even taken further from Subsistence. This Plus news is great!

the controls took a lil getting use to, but once mastered... MGS P.ops was officially inducted into the hall of mobile gaming greatness

With a solid online feature that actually made some console games online functionality look like a joke, Ops had me tweaking for months! Something else that could get me flippin out is the idea of MGS4 being online capable... and I'm not talking DL content only...

This is great news! The online gameplay for MGS3 was by far the best I've ever experienced for any shooter. Top notch all around. I'd buy a PS3 for this game alone.

Wow, that marks, about 4 MGS related things I wanna get now. MGS4 I hope will have online, I don't see why it would'nt, but an all new MP/Online only MGS seems to open up so many new possibilitys. I wonder if the MP/Online only will be a downloadable PSN like Socom, but I can see tons of cool downloadable features, such as new weapons, maps, characters, custom characters, parts for custom characters, equipment (scopes, sights, and cardboard boxes galore!!!) over 2000 hours of gameplay I put into MGS:3 and MGO, so I was pretty upset they took off MGO, but classic MGO maps are coming to the MPO soon as the video shows. And I'll have to agree with Ghruz on the fact that it will come to the States. I mean the trailer confused me cause it was in english, so I think it is coming 99.9% sure at least lol.

I'm pretty confident about MPO+ coming to the U.S. Kojima would have to be a mad man not to lol! But I still wish the MPO PSP back would have came to the U.S. It had awesome extras one of my favorites being the Snake Skin PSP case lol. But when he says "that a similar Metal Gear Solid online game is in development for the PS3." He meant MGS4 right? Or is this a complety new game and MGS4 is being released with out it or a redesigned online mode different from Subsistence?

that would be great to get the MGSO Plus in america. that would sell for me. the game needed more online modes, different muliplayer maps than the single player ones, just to mix things up a bit. getting some multiplayer tailored maps onto the game would be amazing for me

Huh? So Portable Ops Plus is actually Expansion Pack rather than Original with Extra Content? Hmm, guess people have original have no complaints about this. But how could they implement that? Swapping UMD, just like DJMAX 2 link mode?

It isn't MGS4 online, it is a completely new MGS game with focus on online play.

I think the main reason why Kojima is making the new MGS projects is to make up the production cost (my theory). Which sounds very smart.

Ha ha. That's hilarious buffdaddy69, but there are quite a few great PS3 games, even though I have yet to get the system (I will eventually). Such as Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, Heavenly Sword, Lair, Infamous, Echochrome, Ratchet & Clank: Future Tools of Destruction, Pain and Warhawk. So the PS3 isn't so bad off IMO. I still want a 360 more though (and a Wii more than that).

The only reason why i brought a PS3. after i play metal gear solid 4 religiously and beat it multiple times then i shall retire my PS3 back into the garage and wait until a new Metal Gear Solid game emerges. VIVA LA MGS!

I have never played a MGS game before so I do not know weather to get this as in the sony press confrence they said about the game having a storyline and I might not be able to pick it up. If the gameplay is good though I might consider buying this.

How do you add on to a single game, especially on a PSP?
Sounds neat though, I wish PO would be ported to the PS2 or PS3 store or something. But I like what I hear about the online PS3 game. Very neat.
