E3 '07: Silent Hill 5 spooking 360, PS3

Konami goes multiplatform for its horror survival series' next-generation debut, set for sometime next year.

SANTA MONICA, Calif.--Today at Konami's record-settingly brief E3 Press Event, producer William Ortell announced that the company is developing Silent Hill 5 for "next-generation" platforms. The announcement marks the continuation of the long-running horror survival series, which made its debut on the original PlayStation in 1999. Over the next several years, the franchise made its way onto the PC, Xbox, PlayStation 2, and the PlayStation Portable. It also arrived on the big screen in the form of the Silent Hill film, which was successful enough to spawn a sequel (due out next year).

Soon after the Konami event's literal 15 minutes were up, the publisher officially announced that Silent Hill 5 is in development for both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Currently set for a 2008 release, the game will follow a veteran who returns to his hometown to search for his brother, who has mysteriously vanished. As is often the case in Silent Hill games, his quest leads him to the titular ghost town, where eeriness is in full effect.

Konami is bringing back the sinister atmosphere and grotesque inhabitants of Silent Hill for the fifth game, but other aspects of the game are being changed. Specifically, the publisher said the game will include a new combat system, with an array of defensive and offensive techniques. The game will also sport an original soundtrack from series producer and sound director Akira Yamaoka.

Am I the only one who doesn't know what the heck silent hill is about? I was able to understand RE after playing number four but I'm clueless as to what the heck Silent Hill is about.

Well there's just some little general info and 3 images of the game so i guess it's way to soon for panic about PC conversion.

Don't worry, I'm not just here to advertise a console. This game looks pretty neat. Prepare for a next gen "the lock to this door is broken".

I really like Silent Hill. I have finished all of them except the fourth one, which unfortunately wasn't as good as the others. Anyway i'm really looking forward to this game, it looks to be great.

They should remake Silent Hill 2 simply for the reason that I never got to play it. In fact, all game designers should design games around my personal preferences or needs. And everyone else should agree with my opinion no matter how stupid it might be.

I remember being scared of SH1 even before I started playing because of that screen with Alessa and the car that said "This game contains violent and disturbing images". Looking back at the graphics, they were obviously inferior to the later games (the torso of the hanging dead body in the beginning was basically a box with rounded edges), but you BELIEVED it, and so it was scary. Like others have said, they should drop the 'continuous storyline' idea and remake the town. Otherwise, everything just feels predictable (god forbid it get to the point where you can run around town without even looking at a map). Make it weird. Make it dark. Make us believe.

Nice, now my Xbox will be able to feel the psychological ownage that is Silent Hill. But i think that the war-veteran plot is very simmilar to the one of jacob's ladder (The movie that inspired konami to this game)

I hope they make it just as ridiculously wrong (in terms of scariness) as Sh1 or 3. 3 just...yikes. Can't wait for this one and the highly advanced sound engineering behind it given it's next-gen.

Excellent! I'm glad SH5 will make its way onto the 360, because I'm sure not acquiring a PS3 for it, much as I love the series. From what I've seen, though, this is going to be even more twisted than previous games.

And by next year I should even have a 360. Woot.

Those are really good news!! I will be waiting for this, just hope it continues the good way it came, very scary and mind bending puzzles.
Also with the soundtrack made by Akira Yamaoka I cannot wait to listen to it, hope it would be a mix of SH industrial sounds and that of the SH2; I didn't like at all the music of SH 3 and less the SH4 soundtrack. slowly they came to an appropriate sound to soft rock. But I don't complain, this must be an awesome new adventure in the wonderful town of Silent Hill.

Gotta say, I'm stoked about this game. And I agree, although I love RE4, it's not very scary. Gets your adrenaline pumping, but that's not supposed to be from action in a horror game. I do hope they do something with the combat system, and a few other flaws that remf18 mentioned. For atmosphere though, Silent Hill owns!! Oh yeah, and the site says it's coming out for 360 as well. So you guys don't need to start saving every single penny you come across for a PS3.

I have been praying for the announcement of this game for so long, it's like a dream come true. The Silent Hill series is the best set of horror games ever created. I like the way the town and the places are the same, makes it feel more real, for me anyways. Just please tell me it's not gonna go the way of RE4! If I wanted an action game I'd go get one, I hope Silent Hill stays the way we came to love it as an adventure game.Too bad it's gonna be 3 or 4 years before we actually get the game. I hope it doesn't get as many setbacks and delays as Origins. This game alone makes the price I paid for my PS3 worth it. Alone in the Dark coming doesn't hurt either.

I really hope they combine the best of each SH game and omit the worst of each. Which is to say, omit and forget pretty much everything that took place in SH4 except its better paced combat and superior visuals. I really hope this is a stand alone SH that ties into the old games, but excludes Allessa and all that business in favor of a fresh story revolving around the main characters and the town's long and very shady history (more along the lines of James's personal hell of SH2), which means a completely new/revamped town and settings (no more backtracking to the same rehashed buildings, please! Enough with the Hospital and Apartment buildings already!). Byond all that, can we also hope for grossly more intelligent enemies and better array of weapons and usable items? It's a Konami game, the masters behind Metal Gear. Would it be so hard to make all of the unique monster types their own stand alone characters (with their own sets of strengths, weaknesses, and quirks for handling them). Combat and weapon selection has always been a SH weak point. Enemies have always been stupid things you walk around quitely or tear threw with your biggest baddest weapon available while conserving ammo when neccesary. Essentially, every SH enemy and boss has had an 8-bit mindset and attack patterns to match that with no real qurks except maybe a boss weak point. All weapons were equally similar, leaving the combat feeling very dull in replays. If they only stole some of that Metal Gear creativity and ingenius for the next SH game, it could be the first SH game to be worthy of a perfect 10. For such a strong series with strong plots that force you to think and draw your own concluscions and with an unmatched atmosphere, this is the series that deserves the full service of attention all around. Capcom fired hard at all the other Survival Horror clones and its own past with RE4's departure from conventionalism and its new ingenious top rate... well, everything really. I'm hoping Konami takes this as a personal challenge to reincarnate Silent Hill from a great nitch game series to a Horror masterpiece.

Alas, I fear I'm wanting and expecting too much. I guess that's not too much of a bad thing. More (real) Silent Hill is always a good thing.

I'm excited bout there bein a fifth game, but it better be real good. I jus got done playin SH3...yet again (probably cause it's my favorite) and I still get scared over that game. I got my fingers crossed on this one, cause I need some new horror...somethin to make me scared to turn off the lights or somethin. like...SOON!

Yeh, this game is gonna rock!!! Silent hill 4 was a joke, so random n wasnt that scary, i dont know why it was rated certificate 18 lol!! They should make SH5 an 18 n really make it scary, so scary that it can do some mild-extreme psychological damage to you, not permenant of course! The new combat system should make the fighting with the monsters more realistic, and the music composed by Akira should make the game players feel at home.

I third that. The fact that the hero is a veteran should make for a pretty awesome story, provided Konami decides to pull no punches. If the story's anything like that seen in any of the first three SHs, we should have another psychological horror masterpiece in our hands...

If this guy is a Veteran .. then he is in deep trouble in Silent Hill .. due to the fact Silent Hill feeds off your " Inner Demons " you could say .. This guy probably has some issues .. and those issues are gonna manifest themselves .. maybe some old war buddies .. who knows .. I think this game is gonna rock ..
