E3 '07: Konami mulling multiplatform MGS4

Japanese publisher doesn't expect a "substantial impact" from $100 PS3 discount, says game's exclusivity is in question.

SANTA MONICA, Calif.--Earlier this week, Sony dropped the price on its PlayStation 3 60GB model from $599 to $499. Analysts responded favorably to the announcement, saying it would put pressure on Microsoft to drop the price of its Xbox 360 system, the priciest configuration of which currently costs $479. But while analysts might think the cut is enough to make the PS3 cost-competitive, one of Sony's biggest publishing partners appears underwhelmed.

Speaking with Reuters, Konami North American and European operations head Kazumi Kitaue expressed doubt. "I wonder if Sony can win back user support by the price cut of just $100," Kitaue said, adding, "I don't expect a substantial impact...With $500, you can buy a personal computer."

Kitaue no doubt would like a cheaper PS3 in order to spike sales of the machine and have a larger installed user base in place for Konami's highly anticipated PS3 exclusive Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. However, the executive said Konami might have to bring the series to non-Sony systems in order to make its development money back.

"Since Metal Gear Solid was born for the PlayStation, we would like to keep it a PlayStation game," Kitaue said. "But we might have to take some steps."

MGS4 will always stay with SONY..thats were it belong. And anyway the x360 definitely couldnt handle the power of MGS4 because MGS4 is so advnance thta wouyld probably break the x360 or make the x360 overheat and probably end-up having the RED RING OF DEATH

Now that it's pretty much confirmed that MGS4 is still a PS3 exclusive, was Mr. Kitaue just trying to drum up some publicity by stating that they "might have to take some steps"? Or is this just another case of Sony-related executives not being on the same page (i.e. all over the place)? I still hope the game comes to the 360 eventually because 1. the PS3 is still too expensive and 2. the new E3 trailer is completely SICK!! (no pun intended!)

dmalone569, id like u 2 name one ps3 exclusive other than mgs4, to be excited about ( not that it would stay one for long). Im not exactly an MS fanboy but the mere fact that people will be able to play the same games with similar if not better console by buying a cheaper console, will insure 360 dominance over the PS3.

i love how ppl rant about loyalty (*extreme sarcasm*)....if ppl are screaming about loyalty, then lets remember the METAL GEARS and the FINAL FANTASIES started on NINTENDO'S console,(NES) so scream about that...if youre gonna b**** about a company being loyal be consistant. plus KONAMI IS A 3RD PARTY COMPANY PPL!!!! the reason METAL GEAR & FINAL FANTASY franchises are on sony's console is becuz the N64 couldnt handle the vision these companies had for their respective properties. the PS1 was the logical choice to produce these franchises on. 3rd party companies dont need to be loyal to any particular console...should TECHMO have been loyal to MS when they made NINJA GAIDEN (another franchise that appeared on NES) for PS3?? NO!! (i love that PS3 fans get to play this game though a remake but a good one) dont here SONY fanboys b**** about that TECHMO should stay loyal to MS!! these are 3rd party companies....these loyalty arguments are just retarded

Many sony fanboys said 360 can't handle this game....i didn't see a lot of differences between 360 and ps3...they all just look the same..when come to graphic comparison..ps3 graphic was slightly improved than 360..but that doesn't mean 360 can't play the game....

ps: only first party game look differences between others...

If MGS4 goes to X360 I"m gonna buy a X360. I'm not a fanboy, but the X360 is cheaper, has better online capability, has more good exclusive games (Halo, Fable, Dawn of the Dead, Gears of War), and I don't trust Sony and the japanese people. And I don't trust Bill Gates either.

I swear, if MGS4 goes multi-platform they are for sure ruining a classic. Its funny how Xbox is getting all these once Playstation exclusives, but its like they get them just to get them, to say they have them. I dont know though, I feel if Sony steps up some from E3 until the holidays MGS4 will remain a Sony gem.

Damn right! Especially after Sony dropped the bomb today! Sony's dropping the 60GB PS3 price only to liquidate it from the market. The $599 price is staying, it's just giving you an 80GB harddrive. Sony was very deceptive in the way they handled all this and Konami would be smart to realease the game on a system that isn't run by a company that is so full of deceit. MGS4 on Xbox 360, you have my support, Konami.

@ahmedsadek----------------------------------------------------------------------------i agree with your point in terms of the quality of the game (graphics, content, etc) cuz when a game is multiplatform, companies dont always use the full potential of each console....but i am also looking at it from the companys' standpoint, with development costs as high as they are, going multiplat' to get some money back isn't a bad idea...your point about games taking less time to develop if made for one console only, correct me if im wrong, but some high profile games have always been developed for one system first then maybe a yr or so later its released on another console...so still, MGS4 (for example) wont lose graphical quality on PS3 since it would be made first on that system. at least you are making some good points, some of these posts go down the path of name calling and 'mine is better than yours' BS.

If you notice, it was never directly stated that MGS4 would go to another system. It was already said in past interviews a while back with Kojima that other Metal Gear games could go to other systems but that each Metal Gear would be exclusive to the system it was developed for from the start. My take on it is that if MGS4 doesn't do well on the PS3 and make Konami back the money they spent then future Metal Gear titles could go to other systems.

Again, I never saw anywhere in this article where it was literally stated by the Konami operations manager that, "Metal Gear Solid 4 might go cross-platform". This is very similar to the statement made by some French employee of Square-Enix that, "the exclusivity of Final Fantasy XIII to the PS3 might be under debate". Yeah, nothing ever came from that either.

fanboy_killa, the reason why fans of a specific console want their favorite games to stay exclusive is because developing costs time and money. A game that is released on PS3 only (for example) will take less time to be finished rather than one that is released on PS3, 360, Wii..., not to mention that the quality will be much better if the developers focus only on one console when making the game.

i dont get ppls arguements over rather or not a game stays on one system or not. do ps3 fans complain when 360 games go to ps3? do any of you work for any of these companies? maybe its lack of maturity...i just dont get why ppl get insane on these forums hoping a game stays exclusive....youre getting the game anyway (ps3) and im sure IF GEARS or HALO went to ps3 (i said 'if'), 360 fans would get their panties in a bunch too.....whats the big deal IF MGS4 (i said 'if') went multiplat'? if u prefer a ps3...fine...if u prefer a 360 or wii...great....it doesnt seem to be a lot of adults on this forum, so maybe thats the reason these posts sound like 12yr olds ranting on and on whose system is better.....but i have learned that there will always be haters on all sides of this debate or lack of a debate and not much can be done about that..reminds me of back in the day when sega fanboys and nintendo fanboys argued over specs and other nonsense. im hoping for a utopia of gamers that can unite someday and just enjoy gaming no matter what youre favorite system is.

Metal Gear and Final Fantasy, both Sony exclusives today, started out on Nintendo. I think it's time to bring them home I adore the graphic capabilities of the PS3, but it's still too much. Reasons I don't buy a PS3. 1. Nothing worth playing
    2. PS1 and PS2 broke too many times. 3. Don't own a high definition TV, so what good do all those pixels do me? 4.Too much money. Reasons I usually end up buying a Sony system.

    1. A game comes out that is exclusive to them that I just HAVE to play. So you see, if they lose their exclusivities, I really have 4 great reasons NOT to buy a PS3. And BlueRay? That is years from becoming any kind of mainstream device. The VCR dominated for 30 years and DVD is only about 5-10 years old in most homes. People don't want to have to get a new video player every five years just so they can see the freckles on Morgan Freemans ears. BlueRay really doesn't entice me at all.

    :
Why did they discontinue the 20GB model, they could of sold it for $299 to compete with the 360 CORE, the 60GB to compete with the 360 Pro @ $399, and the new 80GB @ $499 to compete with the elite.

While i agree on your point of the 20GB, you have to realise that they couldn't release it at the same price of the Xbox 360, infact they can't even do this price drop properly, because it's costing them a lot of money.

What you have to remember is that the PS3 has a Blu-Ray drive, while you can argue about wether it was a good choice to put it in, the fact is that it is in the PS3, and with the PS3 being 100 dollars more, i'd say that 100 bucks for a Blu-Ray drive isn't that bad.

If the PS3 is overpriced, then so is the 360 and the Wii (the Wii sounds cheap, but once you buy a component cable and a lan/wifi adapter, then it's not so cheap anymore), the thing is that the PS3 just costs a lot, but not to much really.

Personally you won't see me buying a PS3 untill it's under the 400 euro here and there are a whole bunch of great games out.

Exclusive just doesn't mean what it use to. These days it only means "exclusive" for a month or two. I don't care what Hideo says, if they can't recoup the costs of making this game on the PS3, not to mention make a decent profit, you'll see this game jump ship so fast it'll make your headspin.

Face it, there are no fanboys in the corporate world.

My guess is that when the extended director's cut edition of this game (A.K.A like MGS2 Substance and MGS3 Subsistence) then they'll port it to other consoles like Xbox 360 and PC maybe even Wii (even though I highly doubt it). So it'll probably be a year or two before we might see this on any other consoles.

    RE: Kenshin100

TEAM NINJA.... mmm did you forget that Ninja Gaiden Sigma is simply a port of Ninja Gaiden on the Xbox or did you forget Team Ninja is responsible for DOA3 and DOA4 exclusives to the XBOX and 360 respectively, mmmm sounds like you're for multi-platform if titles go from other consoles to the Sony Camp...

Are you on the SONY payroll... I'm sure they don't pay your bills, nor do they really care about their users and fans. If they did they would give you an option choose from a gaming system, and a set-top box. Why did they discontinue the 20GB model, they could of sold it for $299 to compete with the 360 CORE, the 60GB to compete with the 360 Pro @ $399, and the new 80GB @ $499 to compete with the elite.

That would be fair to you, and to all the gamers out there... AND BTW IF HD is the promise of PS3, why do you have to buy a HDMI or Component cable separately. It should be included in the box, sounds like SONY doesn't care much for gamers, but Konami entertaining bringing MGS4 multi-platform is taking their business and gamers' sentiment into account, broadening their offering to more gamers, and at the same time helping achieve better revenue.

    EL FIN.

    RE: Kenshin100

Why would Konami or any other 3rd party publisher care about the success of one particular console. Their objective is to make games that will sell, and that the masses will embrace. By broadening their distribution to other channels i.e. going multi-platform brings the game, MGS4, to more people, which in turn will gain konami more visiability as a Top Game Publisher, leading to more people to feel confident in buying other konami titles. It's good business.

adidaspj, Kojima has no say in what platform the game goes on, he's just the designer/director. If the North American and European Head of Operations has said this in the gaming press, it's pretty clear that they'll have been speaking with Japan about it. Company heads at businesses like Konami generally don't just blurt out whatever's on their mind about their flagship brand, especially when it comes to something as important as exclusivity. Its a company wide feeling they have here, not a random dept jumping up and down. Makes sense to have the North American sector make the announcement considering that the international gaming press is all in America doesn't it?

It might not be released at the same time as the PS3 version, but I hope this comes to 360 this is my favorite series. But the PS3 is a flop I hope to god they port this. Right now the only good games that PS3 has besides Resistance and Motor Storm are multi platform. So there is not reason to buy a PS3 when this will likely come to 360.
