Virtua Fighter 5 kickin' it on Xbox Live

Sega opening up the online ring for the 360 version of its long-running fighting series.

Released earlier this year on the PlayStation 3, Sega's Virtua Fighter 5 was bittersweet for fans of the precision-based fighting series. While reviewers were impressed by its graphics and gameplay, a limited single-player mode and lack of online fighting were disappointing drawbacks. However, with its Xbox 360 version slated to arrive this fall, Sega is hoping to counter those criticisms with a vicious uppercut.

Today the publisher sends word that Virtua Fighter 5 on the Xbox 360 will feature online-enabled fisticuffs over Xbox Live. Drawing from a global pool of players, the online versus mode will let players choose from 17 characters or a custom character created in the game's quest mode. Players will also be able to compete for prizes and earn virtual money for use in an in-game shop.

The Xbox 360 version will also introduce tweaks to the single-player quest and dojo modes. Quest mode on the 360 will include additional opponents, items, and character-customization emblems, while dojo mode will benefit from leaderboards and more training options. The Xbox 360 version will also support rumble functionality.

Virtua Fighter 5 is rated T for Teen and will retail for $59.99.

Yay, it's online. Now I gonna buy this, AND Soulcalibur 4, and have some AWESOME online fighting games. I love fighting games, but, it sucks that there is no one around to play me, so, online is good.

Now I can play against worthy opponents online, instead of my local cousins who are weak and cheap. Add me to your LIVES VF5 players.

Microsoft must have some sort of Deal with Sega....I only say this because this is exactly the same thing wih Virtua Tennis 3.......no online for PS3 but online for 360....either that or Sega just doesn't like the PS3's shoddy online service.....and yes it is shoddy when compared to xbox live.

That's a kick in the nuts for all the PS3 gamers that bought the game. Pure and simple. Sega could have done online play for the PS3, no doubt about it. Hell with all the Dream Cast online experience, you would think that Sega knows how to slap some online play onto a game.

Sega and Sony should take note: ADD ONLINE PLAY FOR GAMES! I think that this game deserves a free online update that adds online play. That's the only way they can make this up.

Most of the PS3's early lineup went sans online, as about 90% of the criticisms with most of their titles was "This game looks good, but... I'm kinda playing by myself." VF5 not having any never surprised me. VF5 having online on Xbox 360, somehow, just sounds right. Probably because Xbox Live was installed in the last generation leading into this one, allowing the vast majority of MS's games to be online in some way shape or form (Remember: this was their pledge at E3 '05- "Every 360 game will have Live capabilities in one way or another.").

As far as the PS3 fanboys ranting and raving, what else is new? Been hearing nothing but snivels from them since the day the damn thing launched. Of course if I was running out of room in my a$$ for the industry to further slide it in, I'd be mad too.

there are alot of people making gripes about the online portion of the game, and there is some weight to their side of the debate. the demands of the fightiing engine, and split second timming could cause some hardcore VF fans some headaches, but I'm sure that it was taken into consideration, and the fact that most 360 games match you to players with favoable pings.... notice, I said, favorable, and not perfect. the further the signals or commands have to go, the more lag you will receive, added to the fact that some live players depend on lag to win (host adavantage) and actually start messengers and downloads in order to make the latency worse in their favor. there shoujld be a minimal amount of disappointment in the online play I'm sure am2 will tweak it accordingly and Vets of the series should have little difficulties adjusting and pwning newbs.

I got the PS3 version but with the lack of online play I got bored pretty quickly. I love fighter games but these days my friends don't come over to play games as much. Fighter games are meant for playing against someone else like in the arcade. Now the Xbox 360 will have online play. I have to give this round to Xbox. And say to Sony never come out with fighter game without online play.

Wow, boy did sega BS the ps3 version on this one. What was the reason they couldn't have online again on the ps3? They should have at least told the truth than lie and then come out with a far superior xbox360 version with online : \ Though "GoddBless" does speak the truth...

Well what can I say? There's definintely a double standard here with Sony fanboys who at first bashed SEGA for predicting the PS3 price cut and then went crazy when it was confirmed but refused to apologize to them and now they're on the warpath because the 360 version on VF5 will have online play.

Considering the fact that everyone has **** about SEGA's 3rd party lineup within the past two years, I'm crossing my fingers that VF5 for 360 sells well because Sega already reconizes that they are not cutting it as a software publisher.

I'm glad 360 fans may not be dissapointed with thier version of VF5 but I don't see myself buying one. It's not that I don't like 360, I like it. It's just that I have a sneaky feeling we'll get to play a true Lindbergh arcade port on a SEGA console over the horizon.

I read how some PS3 owners want to boycott Sega for making a superior VF5 on Xbox. Ummm, how is that going to help the PS3? The PS3 fanboys bragged that Oblivion looked better, R6V had free extra content, and VF5 on PS3 would be superior to Xbox360s version. Now the 360 is getting the Oblivion graphics upgrade, R6V red and black content for free, and a VF5 thats superior in every way, and the PS3 fanboys are mad at Sega. LOL! Why don't you just boycott all the games that are better on the 360, which are pretty much all the multi platform games. Just cast stones at the developers who make the games and defend Sony to the death. I don't think any developer had intentionally made their game perform worse on the PS3, but who cares, right?
Who cares if Sony was so arrogant that they said people will buy a PS3 no matter what the price was or how many good titles it had or even what the quality was. I rarely see a PS3 fanboy ever blame Sony for their problems, its always the fault of someone else. That's what makes them a fanboy.
I was pissed when i had to pay for my 3 red lights of death, but now I'm getting reimbursed, with an extended warranty. I don't want to pay for non-exclusive content on my 360, now I will never have to. I wanted HDMI and a larger hard drive and now I can get them for 360. MS learned from their mistakes and shortcomings and rectified them. I can honor that. MS is spending BILLIONS on exclusives, development, support, XBL, and customer satisfaction, and I love them for it. They made errors and have decided to invest in their product to provide the best gaming experience at this moment, period. They don't shrug me off and promise a better future.
Sony is like a false god acting as if it can do no wrong, and the PS3 fanboys are their devout followers. The only way the PS3 will reach its true potential is if those followers demand a reason for their loyalty from their false god. If the fanboys are happy then Sony has no reason to improve. If the fanboys want to chastise the developers and equate them to heretics deserving punishment, i.e. banishment, then they will be apart of the PS3s downfall. Oh well.
I will most likely get a PS3 when MGS4 comes out, but until things drastically change on Sonys part I will not be getting many other games for it. I'll have a blue-ray player that plays a handful of good exclusives, and as a middle age gamer that had almost every US released game system including Vectrex, Coleco's ADAM and Neo-Geo, (I skipped Virtual Boy cause it gave me migraines,) I am looking forward to getting a PS3. I hope by then it will have earned it's price tag, otherwise it will mostly be used as a BR player, just like many today are. If the PS3 fanboys can convince Sony to adapt and improve it could happen. But from the posts I've read I have my doubts. Either way I'll be enjoying the best games the world has to offer so I'm cool with that. Peace all!"

I nominate this for best post of the month, maybe even year!

You're telling me the average PS3 owner wouldn't be interested to know that the 360's version will have online and rumble? Lets be realistic here.

Although this is good news, in the end it's not going to mean much. There is a reason why Am2 (and namco bandai for that matter) have never brought one of their games with online capibility. The fact of the matter is the timing needed in these games is far to accurate (to a split second or frame) to have real competitive play online.

    It just doesnt work.

You many be able to get away with it with games such as DOA or mortal Kombat, but it just doesnt work with the titles that are a little more "technical" in their gameplay.

So in the end this isnt to big, and PS3 owners shouldnt feel hard done by.

  • Ced_Quijote

  • Suyomizzle_

    Posted Jul 8, 2007 4:32 pm PT

    HAHAHA CALLED IT

Complete and total ownage on every level.

And I understand the fact that true competitive play will never, ever be possible online with any fighting game, and especially one as complex and technical as Virtua Fighter, but it is a nice addition for casual players, or anybody, to just get online and fight and see what they can do not expecting it to be a true showcase of their skill.

    Posted Jul 8, 2007 2:10 pm PT

I look upon the online addition of VF5 with a bit of trepidation. Having been tracking the scene for a while, I knew of AM2's primary reason for keeping online out of the VF picture: timing. Considered the Cadillac of the remaining fighter games, VF has some of the tightest timing demands of them all, with some having move windows as tight as a single frame out of 60 (or about 16 milliseconds). Originally, AM2 wanted to keep online out of it because the average lag time of the Internet itself (about 50-100 milliseconds) would close some of those windows and spoil the experience.

As far as sega fans biting back i would say there is some truth in that. i bought the sega dreamcast at launch and have to say it was one of the best consoles i have owned and ahead of its time with the internet access. If it were not for the dvd player sony would not of stood a chance.

Guess now its time for Sega to be the thorn in Sonys side.

This for me is one of the greatest things to be announced vf fans brought togehter to see who is the best. Cannot wait better get in some practise!

I think it including a DVD player was important and it influenced a lot of people especially early in the PS2's life but I bought one because of games like FFX and MGS2 which were announced at the beginning. I thought PSX was a lot better though. Still, Dreamcast did not impress me, I liked those games you mentioned but there were so many better games on the other next gen systems except for soul caliber in the fighting genre. Also when Skies was ported to cube that was another reason not to buy a cube. I also predicted at the beginning that it would die in the first couple years after the arrogant comments Sega made about Sony. Also seeing how Sony grew in the last years of the PSX and with the DVD player in PS2 and all the new games I predicted it would grow signifcantly.

im still depressed about the dreamcast taking a nose dive into a grave. i was playing soul calibur, skies of arcadia and the 2K sports games like sega was invinsible. i even had fun playing house o the dead. but for some reason everyone i knew wanted the little sony system that had a dvd player. that was hot stuff back then since dvd players were pricey. i made my buying decisions based on multiple reviews from magazines and word of mouth. i dont see how ps was a must buy other then the fact about the dvd player. they made a whole lot of below par games, yes they were below par, but they made so many and so many different kinds that parents started buying it for their young ones because of all the movie, cartoon, and disney games.
sony went the route of impressing he parents and nobody should deny thins. almost all of you had a special birthday surprise one year that came out last after all other presents. and abracadabra! you were now sony fans. the demise of sega and the crippling of nintendo were bad and i wanted sony to fail. they didnt. probably wont now. i still dont think they deserve to be here however. my brothers have a ps2 and although i found some games entertaining, i just dont think theyve ever done anything other than throw their massive amounts of money into a pool that promises to spit even more money out at them.

Uh Kevy, I'm pretty sure those people who are angry about what happend to Sega and Sony are in the minority. The SNES is one of my favorite systems and I went on to buy all the other Nintendo systems but Playstation was also one of my favorite systems and I'm happy about what Sony did. Nintendo and Sega just made some plain stupid decisions. Playstation had tons of classics, especially if you like companies like Square, Konami, Capcom, and Namco. I never really liked Sega, I had a Genesis but its the worst system I ever owned and I sold it to get an N64. Sony is doing poorly now mainly because of its price and the all the arrogant comments its been making. I really liked Sony up until close to PS3's launch when it kept saying all that **** reminded me of Sega in the dreamcast era. Nintendo actually looked like it'd deliver this time though and same with Microsoft. I also refuse on principal to pay $600 for a system even though I had the money for it. Anyway, the Wii is doing well because its got many hardcore fans interested again and plus they have really got people interested including people that don't play games.

The thought of Sega and Nintendo fans hatting on the PS3 is a really valid theory.
My first counsole was the SNES and I really didnt know that much about games but then I bought a Play Station and a Sturn and I liked the Saturn better.
Then when I dicided I was gona buy a Dreamcast Sega has cut its support to that system so I didnt want a PS2 so I bought an Xbox and untill this day I think that Sony is responsible for what happenned to Sega and the low quality of games they make these days.
I am getting an Xbox 360 next month but I will have to wait and see if the PS3 is worth buying and the news about VF5 going online for the 360 changed it from a mehh to a must have and that totaly disputes anything Sony says to me about the cell or Blue-Ray.
