PS3 outselling Wii and 360 in Australia

50,000 PS3s sold down under since launch; Sony Computer Entertainment Australia head says console "outselling Wii and Xbox 360."

Last week, Nintendo Australia was shouting from the rooftops about the success of the Wii in the country, with the console becoming the fastest to reach 100,000 units sold down under. Now Sony Computer Entertainment Australia (SCEA) has gone on the offensive, with managing director Michael Ephraim saying the PlayStation 3 has been the number one-selling next-gen console in the country since its launch, outselling the Wii and the Xbox 360 almost every week.

In an interview with GameSpot AU, Ephraim quoted figures from data trackers GfK Australia, which show that the PS3 has sold more than 50,000 units since it was launched on March 23, 2007. In comparison, the Wii has sold 100,000 units since its launch on December 7, 2006. "Based on GfK since launch, PS3 has been the number one next-gen console, outselling Wii and Xbox 360 every week, except for last week," Ephraim said.

"Since March 23, PS3 has been the number one-selling next-gen console in Australia, and this is GfK figures. We've now sold 50,000--and we're very excited about the fact that it's being sold in retailers that are gaming retailers as a gaming device and other things, but as you'll notice it's now being sold in Harvey Norman consumer electronic stores as a Blu-ray player."

Australia's next-gen console sales figures seem to be in marked contrast to Japan's, with figures from May showing that the Wii outsold the PS3 by five units to one.

    I'm pretty sure that some, if not all, of this info isn't accurate... Just cause the amount of PS3's bought in a week is more than a Wii (at this point) doesn't mean it's selling better. This is called "extrapolating" folks.

    The Wii's been out for longer. And I'll bet that the PS3 can't bench 100k as fast as the Wii can here in land of Green (360) and Gold (Wii).

    Im confused. http://vgchartz.com/eweekly.php This site here shows weekly sales, I went back and the most recent date the PS3 has oldsold both consoles, week of April 22nd. Every week past 22nd the PS3 was 2nd and 360 3rd. As the weeks passed by PS3 sales dropped coming close to 360 weekly sales. To some this up, when they say "almost" it must mean the first month it was released and dont consider the past 3 months. More Sony propaganda.

    Sony invested billions on PS3, and at this point it isn't paying off. I say let them have their illusions in thinking that Australia is a valuable market or an Iowa of game sales...

    Wow, they sold 50,000 in a shorter time than the Wii. In Australia. So they're gloating that they've outsold it there but is failing almost everywhere else? Next time you decide to gloat Sony, make sure that you have really outsold other systems.

    omg they are outselling... :O, who gives a donkey's arse? its just a freaking console... i personally prefer the ps3 to all in terms of hardware, but the wii for the fun stuff. but take absolutely no care what so ever in how a particular console is selling. its not like im a bloody shareholder or economics researcher... i dont even see the point in gamespot even publishing these types of articles. all they do (the articles) is just make fanboys fight each through flaming. and fanboys should be given a reason to fight each other, because most of them are immature morons, who have nothing better to do than to blab crap on gamespot... thats my word about it.     Absolute Rubbish. I know 5 fellow Aussie gamers with 360's. None of us know of anyone with a PS3. Surely this cannot be retail over the counter sales. Even the staff @ EB say the doorstop just does not move...at all. As for the release dates, it's a but of hit and miss. Forza 2 2 weeks after US, but we will get Halo 3 the day before....

    Look at this latest news, looks like the Aussies and Euros gonna get first crack at PS3 games, Japanese get Wii, and US gets 360. Thats a nice spread.

    Yeah, this news is annoying. We'll just see who's the top dog. As Japan says, 5-1 still beats 2-1, as of current status. Who knows, honestly, if the PS3 will constantly continue to sell that many systems? A large number over in Australia who actually wanted that junk (no offense, fanboys) probably have it, so what would make them buy more PS3's? I could say the same for the Wii and 360, the 360 has been out for a longer time than both other consoles, therefore anyone who wanted one probably has one. The same for the Wii, only because of the smaller flow (not producing thousands of systems at a time), not everyone has access to get one, therefore many buyers are still willing to purchase it. As I said before, we can only wait. I guess I'm glad that Sony's still in the game (pun absolutely intended), but only for the poor fools working there.

    GS loves to throw a bone to the PS3 owners (ie true gamers) and then quickly bury it in the news archives. As in "hey look, we couldnt possibly be biased!".     -I fail to see how showing support for PS3 in a positive PS3 news thread is displaying favortism in any shape or form... I never said 360 sucks, its a great system if thats what suits your preferences, same with the Wii... but don't get mad at me for defending the system I prefer either..

    Ummm... Mr. Ephrain does know his math. March 23-June 23 (3 months) saw 50,000 PS3s sold. For a longer period, December 7-June 23 (~6.5 months) the Wii sold 100,000. A little extrapolation and the PS3 will beat the Wii to the 100,000 mark if current trends hold.

    Also, if you had read the linked article where the Wii had reached 100,000 units sold, you would have seen this.

    The previous quickest-to-100,000-sales was the Xbox 360. The 360, which was launched in Australia on March 23, 2006, took approximately seven months to reach that milestone. The Wii took six months and two weeks.

    Overall, this early in the game, all consoles are doing equally well in Australia. Each of the companies are just chest thumping on numbers to keep their shareholders happy.

    This is units shipped to retail stores. Not End User purchases, which is how Sony has always counted their consoles sold. Anyways, If there are 2,500 stores that sell PS3 in Australia, and each of them currently has ~20 in stock, then these numbers are certainly believable . I still don't think they're flying off of shelves as Sony claims, especially with a translated price of about $900 USD. They aren't going to win this gen; and if they do eventually push ahead in a few years, MS and Ninty will probably be prepping the Wii2 and Xbox720 for launch xD

    Should have saved my $400 dollars and bought something for my computer than the 360. Its good news for Sony, but I will eventually get the other two systems, both just need more games for it to be a smart investment. Xbox 360 games are overprice for what you pay for them anyway, I'll wait for them to come to the PC.

    Seems like fuzzy math to me, 100,000 Wii's sold, to 50,000 Ps3's sold, and Ps3 doesn't have any games so they sell there video game console as a blueray player, thats the only reason people are buying Ps3's to begin with, because no one is gonna buy a Ps3 for there wide selection of games.

    Uuummm.. isn't 100,000 more then 50,000? Does this Michael Ephraim know his math or what? What is the total amount of 360's sold in Australia? Why was that figure left out? lmao!! The PS3 isn't #1 anywhere. The Wii has sold more units in Australia then the PS3. 50,000 units is table scraps compared to the 11 million 360 and 8 million Wiis sold worldside. This news is just sad. Sony's managing director trying to find any kind of positive news he can, even if it pretty irrelevant. Sony could have sold 200,000 unites in Australia and they would still be in last place. See, irrelevant.

    The problem here is that Sony fans will only rally behind this and feel like somehow they are superior because of this tidbit.

    Regardless of whether the sale pace is faster, Sony will likely have a hard time producing enough PS3's to keep that pace, and even if they do...

    Nintendo still has more consoles out, which have more software being bought for it. Sony still loses until they outpace the Wii worldwide. Statistics in one rather contained area of the world (you know, the Aussie market that doesn't dominate the world's gaming market) don't dictate the world's trends.

    If anything, this is a rally call for Nintendo fans because it shows that the PS3 sells better as a blu-ray player than it does a gaming system. This is a slap in the face for any true gamers that bought a PS3.

    actualy this is not the case only in land down under. Europe also showed the same numbers at the release. but than again this is really not a surprise. i am european by birth and lived there for 19 years and it was always evident that the gamers there were more into serious gaming, as well as inovation. Playing 7th sequel of some mario clone or boasting halo 2 untill your jaw locks is just not the style there. but again dont take me as a fan boy, i am stating the obvious. if Sony didnt have one of the all time worst releases here the story would have been a bit different.

    The Wii sold 100,000 units in 6 months the 360 did it in 7, and the PS3 has sold 50,000 in 3 1/2 months. Sony is boasting but the truth is they probably won't beat Nintendo's or MS's 100,000 unit marks.

    -I always wondered the same thing as why so many from the 360 camp were commenting on PS3 news.... Well the answer is that Gamespot for some STRANGE REASON posts PS3 news headlines in the 360 news headlines, so PS3 and 360 sections are both displaying PS3 news... I don't get it Gamespot, do you really get off on this constant flame war or somethin'??? Alls I know is I never see 360 news in the PS3 section and even if there was, guess what I wouldn't comment on it anyways BECAUSE IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH MY SYSTEM..
