Hirai: 380 PS3 titles by March '08

[UPDATE] SCEI CEO promises 200 new boxed games and 180 network releases for the console worldwide by end of Sony's fiscal year; SCEA confirms at least 145 for NA.

Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. president and CEO Kaz Hirai will bring 380 games to the platform internationally by March 2008, reports the Japanese news service Nikkei. If accurate, the report marks a big ramp-up in development for the console, which currently sees a dozen or less new releases a month.

Hirai told Nikkei that Sony will release 200 new retail games and 180 download-only titles, although he did not name any titles or developers. According to the GameSpot database, around 150 retail and download titles are currently slated for release before the end Q2 2008 in the US, Europe, and Japan.

[UPDATE] When contacted by GameSpot, Sony Computer Entertainment America senior director of corporate communications Dave Karraker confirmed "105 Blu-ray disc games and about 40 PlayStation Network games and game packs" would arrive in North America by March 31, 2008. However, he added "I don't have visibility on third party games past Christmas and our fiscal runs to the end of March, so there are probably more."

Hirai also reportedly promised that Sony would work with third-party developers to help promote their PS3 efforts by "coordinating such marketing plans as advertisements, events, and in-store promotions."

SCEI's new boss officially started his role earlier this week on June 19, when former chief Ken Kutaragi stepped down to "pass the torch on to the next generation" and pursue his dreams "beyond PlayStation."

According to The Nikkei, Sony shipped 5.5 million PS3s worldwide in the fiscal year ending March 2007--slightly fewer than the six million the company had forecast. The company is expecting to ship 11 million units in this financial year started in April. Nintendo, on the other hand, shipped 5.84 million Wiis during the same period.

Sony CEO Howard Stringer said that he believed the next-gen machine was "making a comeback already," now that production issues had been solved, adding, "We believe PS3, going forward, will be vital to our future and will succeed." He also has publicly hinted that the company is reevaluating the price of the console, which currently costs $599 in the US and £425 (around $847) in the UK.

Hirai also discussed his plans for an Internet video-sharing service for the PS3, noting "We aim to achieve greater popularity than the PlayStation 2."

Wehave to ask a few questions though.

    A. How many titles will come to the US?

    B. How many are also available on the 360?

    C. How many won't suck?

    D. How many aren't EA/2K sports games that come out every year?

    E. How many aren't crappy movie based games?

It does narrow the list down a bit.

@JoeSmith34: do you realize that you're clearly in the wrong about the PS3?

do you realize that the Killzone 2 will definetly be better han KZ1 because Sony is making it one of it's big hitters, thus, they won't let it suck?

do you realize that FFXIII's are most likely going to be out in 2008?

do you realize that Blu-Ray disc's can hold many language tracks and that the games ARE NOT region locked?

do you realize that Konami is not Sony and they make purely games and don't have other things to worry about other than making games?

do you realize that most launch titles suck on anything?

do you realize that the PS3 is far better than the competition and it's only a matter of time before it overtakes?

do you realize that the PS3 is going to get a price-cut sometime in the future?-probably not as it's sounds like on that part you didn't finish reading the article

I hope YOU realize that it's not even a year old and that all game sales are slow in the summer, and that it's definetly still being bought, so do you realize it's not a failure as it's still being manufactured?

Ghetto Ninja...do you realize that God of War 3 hasn't even started the planning stage for development yet!!! Do you realize that the developers of the game said the soonest we would see that game is sometime in 2010!!!!!!

Do you realize that there was a song made about Killzone 2, and it reminded Sony about the fact that Killzone 1 wasn't a good game and it received crappy reviews. One of the lines of the song said, "But Killzone 1 sucked before, so what makes you think we want it more!"

Do you realize that the soonest chance Japan has of seeing Final Fantasy 13 is sometime in late 2008, but more than likely Japan and the rest of the world will not see it released until 2009.

Do you realize that Metal Gear Solid 4 has already been delayed several times, and is now scheduled for the spring of 2008. Do you realize what happened when the PS3 was scheduled to be released in the spring...it ended up being released during the Holiday Shopping Season! DUH!!!!!

Do you realize that Metal Gear Solid 4 has "Holiday Shopping Season," written all over it, and we likely won't see it released until the 4th quarter of 2008!

Almost all of the PS3 games released received crappy ratings and they SUCK. Playstation 3 is a total waste of money that isn't nearly as good as the competition.

Do you realize that the PS3 doesn't have a chance of changing its market position for about three or four years...AT LEAST, and PROBABLY NEVER!

Do you realize that PS1 and PS2 sold 75% of their systems at pricepoints of $199 or lower.

Do you realize the PS3 will NEVER reach those pricepoints...so, make that NEVER--the PS3 will ALWAYS be a very distant third place in terms of sales.

I certainly hope you realize the PS3 is already a market failure for those reasons.

Funny thing is that PS3 has sold half as much as the Wii. Yet it costs over 2 times more to buy so they are making the same money on their console. They are however losing out on software. I think they are smart though cus as soon as the PS3 price drops and big games like MGS4, Killzone 2, Final Fantasy and God of War 3 hit they will be flying off shelves.

The 360 has what like 2 good games out for it now Gothem racing and Lost planet. That's about it, I guess some people liked Gears but I did not care for it to much. This whole ps3 has no games talk should be applied to all consoles because no next gen consoles has any. End of story. The 360 is no better the the playstation and the Playstation at this point is not better than the 360. I enjoy the Playstation more because it's a better piece of hardware and I can play my old school game on it. Let's all face it they are both here to stay. The only reason one will be pulled from the shelf is because of failure rates. If it's too high the Government will force it off the shelf. You can say what you want but it's true. Its a serious problem for microsoft and needs to be addressed. People should buy both systems because there will be games on the 360 that Playstation don't have and the other way around.
So stop the griping and just play some damn games.

  • Phatjam98

    Posted Jun 27, 2007 12:47 pm PT

Seriously, is anyone other than Sony fanboys really all that interested in 380 games? Does anyone honestly care about 190 games? Ok Ok Ok.... who here cares about more than 10 games a year for a single system(console or PC)?

Personally I care about maybe 4-6 games a year, and of those 4-6 generally only 2 are worth keeping, the others get traded back in to try another new game I've been waiting for.

I too agree that 1st person shooters are best on the PC but that dosn't remove responsibility from sony or the developers to make quality games that can compete with the 360 market. Forget about the Wii because is is not the same class of "Next-Gen" and really it is "Old-Gen" with "Next-Gen" controlls.(But one of the funnest gaming experiances since I was 9) The PS3 is loosing badly to the 360. You can tell me they have shipped so many units and that is cool, but go to your local electronics store. Do you need to even ask if they have any PS3's or can you just look at the huge stack in the middle of the isle. So they sure shipped those systems out but it seems they aren't selling. I'd love to see the actual sales numbers not just number shipped.(if it was the greatest system ever shouldn't it be sold out like the Wii?)
On top of that what game is out right now or in the near future that you must buy a PS3 to play? Almost every game that is news worthy is comming out on the 360 as well.

When you think about it, sony is hoping there "numbers" will change opinion and boost there market share. But until they can show good games who really cares about the PS3?

    Posted Jun 27, 2007 12:10 pm PT

they can release 500 titles by early next year but lets face that desnt mean these games are going to be any good. there are thousands of PS2 games but only a few hundred are any good at all

380 Games sounds good , But half of them will be EA Sports games

  • NeoNavarro

    Posted Jun 27, 2007 11:21 am PT

Hopefully things will be turning around for the PS3 soon. I just hope it wont be like the PS2 with games 1 of every 15 games are good and worth buying. Sure PS2 had thousands of games but really how many where good enough to dish out $50.00?

  • buckybuckster

    Posted Jun 27, 2007 10:15 am PT

In the end, I don't think it will be that many as the majority of them probably won't make it past beta testing. From what's been said, the PS3 is a mother to develop for and it's going to take some time for programmers to reign in the cell chip and to really show off what stuff the PS3 is made of.But it's nice to know that the lack of software is being addressed.

casmar82.....if you own a Wii, are you enjoying watching DVD's on it ???? I didn't think so. That feature was dropped from the Wii for the same reason dual HDMI was axed from the PS3...cost cutting.

pang has a point, but game quality and quantity are differant things
the amount of games that came out for the ps2 and the amount that were actually good games were very differant, quality is often sacrificed for quantity and the public seems to ignore that (it's one of the key points of a hardcore fan, they play QUALITY titles)
anyway, personally I don't think there are a lot of really high quality games coming out for either 360 or PS3, there are a few but not a great amount

EDIT: lol casmar, do you remember the emotion chip?

  • Princecake

    Posted Jun 27, 2007 2:51 am PT

I agree with pang. Plus, Sony's doing something awefully wrong with its online network approach - multi-platform games have online mode on xbox360 but not on PS3. That alone will dictates which console consumers will buy (for many anyway..) I really hate Microsoft (thanks to years of lectures from MS hating lecturers) so I will never buy xbox but I'm not going to buy PS3 anytime soon either Wii is stiill pretty refreshing to play atm

  • pang0012

    Posted Jun 27, 2007 1:14 am PT

Gamers who really like games will buy Xbox360 and not PS3. Only Sony hardcore fanboy will go for ps3 at this moment and force themselve to enjoy the little games ps3 can offer so far. I am a ps2 fan because it has the most games last time but ps3 is really pathetic at this moment. Cant even compare to the glory ps2 gain last time. If ps3 can really come up with a bunch of good games later this year or next then I will buy a ps3 but until then 360 is the one to go. Gamers should buy console because of games it can offer and not because of being a fan of that console..it just stupid.

I give up on fighting the PS3 vs 360 fan war, so I'm going to jump in.

The problem with the 360 is simple - its best, flagship games are pretty much (note wording) all shooters.

I hate shooters on a console. I got Resistance free with my PS3 and I hate it. I play shooters on my PC, period. I want the RPGs, the action games, the fighters, the drivers on console. And when you limit the scope to those games, in the next year PS3 will be just as strong as the 360 (I'm not talking currently, stop comparing a console thats been out for ages with a new one).

Shooters on consoles (any console) annoy the bejeebus out of me:
Bad aiming ability, or they give you auto-aim (cheats imo). No mods, community maps etc (which is what makes PC shooters supreme). Severely smaller numbers of players on servers.

The ONLY upside to console shooters is that they are cheaper to get into, cause you don't need a gaming rig.

There. I'm happy now. Rant /off

PS3, lets see, doesn't have Guild Wars or user made content mods like PC UT2004. Doesn't have GRAW like the 360, or Ace Combat 6.
Or old school games like Kid Chamelon on a virtual console. PS3, i'm waiting for another 3 years until its cheaper.

I have a Wii and PS3, and I play both. If I'm playing with my Gf or her brother, we play the Wii. If I'm playing with my roomates or by myself, I play PS3. Both systems are great at what I use them for and I have no regrets about getting either.
And the PSP shouldn't even be mentioned in the same sentence as the DS...it's more expensive and it sucks more.
As far as Olly's comments, game owners need to relax and wait. Of course there are going to be some crappy games coming out in between the good games for the respective platformers -- it's your problem if you are not able to replay some old games and wait for the better ones to hit the shelves.

What A games are shipping? What titles are going to blow people away? This is the information gamers want...Who gives a crap that you will release Barbies fun house 4?

BTW...Those who think Socom will be the best FPS in the market have another thing coming. Check out Call of Duty 4. I would really like to buy a PS3, but the games just are not there to convince me. Why should i buy a PS3? There are only 2 games that are good enough to buy a PS3 - Final Fantasy and Metal Gear Solid. Are two franchises worth the price of a console? I don't think so. Especially when i'm already getting some great games on xbox 360:

    Too Human
    BioShock
    Fallout 3
    Halo3
    Mass Effect

I could go on, but there really isn't any point. PS3 just does not have enough games right now for me to even care that its out.

Nothing great about either hand held. The ds was cheaper and that's why it sells better than the psp, Now that I'll beabel to connect with my ps3 i might find it more usefull, ill ask you again how does console sales actually make it a good console? Honda sells more civics than s2000 does that mean the civic is a better car, no it's just cheaper and nothing better about it, same goes for any product.
