SOE confirms Agency for PC, PS3

Months after it was revealed at D.I.C.E., the online spy MMOG finally has an official title.
By Brendan Sinclair, GameSpot
Posted Jun 11, 2007 10:26 am PT

Sony Online Entertainment has talked about its upcoming super spy project before, but the publisher today gave gamers the first official details of the game.

Set for release on the PC and PlayStation 3, The Agency will be a persistent online shooter in which players can step into the world of international espionage, working for one of two main factions with the ultimate goal of controlling the world. As should be expected of a game that seeks to put players in the role of a Fleming-esque hero (or villain), The Agency will feature adventures in far-off lands, assassinations, illicit drug trade, sabotage, undercover sleuthing, and betrayal.

The theme of the game shouldn't be the only novel element to massively multiplayer online game veterans. SOE said it wants to provide pick-up-and-play fun accessible to any type of player, which might suggest a departure from the traditional MMO level grind. One change is that players won't need to pigeonhole themselves into any particular style of play. Calling the approach, "You are what you wear," SOE is allowing players to customize their character's specialties before each mission through the gear they outfit them with.

There will still be signs of the persistent character development from other online games, however. Players will develop skills over time, but they will also increase their influence over the world and have the ability to set up their own agencies. And since a single player does not a spy network make, there will also be non-player-character operatives that can be recruited and used as resources to build equipment, gather basic intelligence, and do other essential tasks.

SOE is promising a large assortment of story-based missions for players to take on competitively or cooperatively. And when gamers need a break from the physical danger, they can instead opt for financial peril at minigame-loaded casinos, take on other players at the shooting range, or engage in other diversions.

These details aside, SOE is still keeping some of the game's secrets to itself. At the moment, The Agency does not yet have an official release window.

In such a case you could say that graphics of Team Fortress 2 is a rip-off from Western Comics. How narrow-minded is that?

The first person shooting camera mode and targeting reticule look awkward and not very smooth

I still say this is a No One Lives Forever & Team Fortress 2 rip off. "The Agency"... They couldn't have picked a more original name? I guess since the TV show has been cancelled for acouple years.... But still stupid. SOE just doesn't make good games... Evidence this game isn't going to be good.... Star Wars Galaxies.

First of all, i dont understand how you guys can say Bioshock and halo 3 will blow, these are 2 great exclusives coming to xbox 360 and you guys knock them, why, because they are not sony bound, i remember back when ps2 was king and games like that were exclusive to ps2, and you guys thought they were awsome, now the tide has changed and you guys say they will suck, you guys are the ones who are fanboys, its a given fact, those 2 games alone, will sell more than how many PS3's are sold and on store shelves alone. Great sony has all these so called great games coming, big deal they are still at least a year away, if you are a true gamer, you would'nt care so much about down the road, but be careing about the hot games that are out now on the 360, and of course you sony fanboys will say there are no great games on the 360, well think again.....1. Oblivion, 2. Forza Motorsport 2, 3. Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2, 4. Rainbow Six Vegas, 5. Burnout Revenge, 6. Need For Speed Carbon, 7. Most Wanted, 8. Call Of Juarez, 9. Shadowrun, 10. Crackdown, 11. Tenchu Z, 12. Chromehounds, 13. Call of Duty 2, 14. Call of duty 3, 15. Final Fantasy XI with all expansion discs on 1 disc, 16. Dead Rising, 17. Lost Planet, 18. Gears Of War, 19. Condemned, 20. Saints Row, 21. Smackdown vs raw 2007, and the list goes on such as blockbuster hits for kids...22. Shrek the third, 23. Spiderman 3, 24. Viva Pinata, 25. Pirates of Caribbean. Need I say more. All I see that is worthwhile for Ps3 are Resistance and Motorstorm, which motorstorm is nothing like the trailers they were showing before the ps3 even came out. So sony fanboys, please don't knock another system just because your system is not selling, go look on store shelves right now, everywhere around here has ps3's in stock, and they have been there for at least 3 months, 360's sell out every week, and Wii's sell out every day. 360's 11 million and counting, wii's 7 million and counting, ps3's 3 million and counting, on world wide sales. Do the math guys and wake up.

"SirNicoli rule renzor or wutever ur name is.

you cant say that about all of the games coming out for ps3, what almost ten exclusives coming out in E3. its over for the 360.
bioshock looks lame, halo 3 will suck, maybe mass effect will be decent.
this game looks good along with the slew of otehr exclusives that sony is using to crush the xbox"

can you say fanboy? Bioshock and Halo 3 will blow, thats like saying God Of War 3 will blow, Metal Gear Solid 4 looks lame, and Final Fantasy 13 might be decent...dont make me laugh.

"dannyrun56 wow, sony finally on the right track hopefully they keep on releasing great games not some mediocre games"
what are you talking about, the game doesnt even have a realease date nor do we even know it will be good. So far warhawk looks like the best ps3 exclusive coming, and its supposed to be ready this year. I dont think this game is even in the same league as warhawk.

As long as the incorporate the MMO concepts that have worked in the past while adding in a little innovation; this game should be great. It's an interesting genre to put into the MMO universe to say the least...

*Flash back*

Have any of you every played the MMO "Gunz" before? Koreans killed at it. Anyway... after looking at the screen shots of the game it looks really similar to the art that they did in the game. Also, the concept of clothes make the spy is very similar to the way that you purchased different clothes in Gunz as well.

i think it will flop just like 90% of MMO games. the idea seems alot like CoH and CoV to me. personaly i have no intrest in this game. the last MMO i actualy enjoyed was SWG back in the Pre NGE days.

Lol. True. The thing I hate most about DOA is that...

But I started slowly ignoring it after I saw FF9's Kuja....

That man permently burned my eyes with his trampy clothing. (I'm being literal. If anyone wants a link to what he looks like...you've been warned...)

The concept sounds interesting, but I won't even try it. Reason being SWG, I don't really trust SOE they have a tendency to screw up good games, oh and by the way doughtybenjamin, I don't think you should be talking so much about that.. Considering you have a Final Fantasy avatar, pretty much every Final Fantasy game is like that.
