Uwe Boll signs distribution deal with Freestyle

Postal and Dungeon Siege adaptations from the infamous director and producer headed to theaters later this year and early next year, respectively.

Bloodrayne, Alone in the Dark, and House of the Dead director Uwe Boll has signed a deal with independent film distributor Freestyle Releasing to bring more of his video game adaptations to cinemas, according to an article in The Hollywood Reporter.

First to see a big-screen release will be a comedy based on the Running With Scissors shooter Postal, which will star Zack Ward, Dave Foley, Chris Coppola, and Uwe Boll himself, and will be released on September 28 across North America.

Postal follows two days in the life of the star of the games, the Postal Dude, as things go from bad to worse when a plan to make a fast buck by stealing some goods goes predictably wrong.

Next for release will be In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale a movie based on Gas Powered Games' action role-playing franchise where a man named Farmer seeks vengeance for the death of his son by the evil Krugs. In the Name of the King: Dungeon Siege will star Jason Statham, Ray Liotta, Ron Perlman, Leelee Sobieski, John Rhys-Davies, Matthew Lillard, and Burt Reynolds. It will be released January 18, 2008, across some 2,500 cinema screens in North America.

Boll will also get a release for Seed, a horror movie about a psychotic mass murderer named Sam Seed awaiting execution on death row. After three botched attempts to electrocute Seed, the still-living inmate claws his way out of his coffin and sets out for vengeance. Seed--not a video game adaptation--will star Michael Pare and opens in early 2008.

In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale is said to have cost some $60 million to produce, and Postal around $20 million. Boll will be providing publicity and advertising for the films himself through private funding.

Freestyle Releasing is a Malibu, California-based film distributor that was founded in 2003. The company specialises in low-budget films, and recent titles include The Illusionist, An American Haunting, and The Abandoned.

I can't believe they gave this project to Uwe Boll... this guy can't make a good movie.

Because ghsacidman... the American film industry is a breeding ground for total crap. For some reason, hollywood never got the hint that you have to make movies good in order for people to want to go see them. You can't throw nonsense on the screen just because you have a greedy executive producer(s).

Okay, How much can one guy mess up with Postal? I mean, from what he have done so far it's basically already Postal... But, then again Postal never had that much of special intruiging story, it's more about sick and bloody humour and gore. But, well... As long as he doesn't mess with something that really matters...

So long as he doesn't get his hands on the film rights to a game franchise I actually give a rat's ass about, he can do whatever he wants.

I can't believe im about to say it... but the dungeon siege film may have a chance at being reasonably good. Theres some good actors in it, but then I suppose with Uwe Boll directing them, we can expect to see the low point of some good careers. Hope it does well, as the actors could make it a good film, but if it flops, it just gives me another reason to hate Uwe Boll. Win-win

So... I don't understand why anyone gives this guy the time of day? He has never made a good movie, ever! Why would anyone continually give him the rights to these movies after the crap he has made.

I agree, it isn't Uwe Boll you should be mad at, be mad at your beloved video game companies turning their franchises over to a guy they know will destroy them. He gets his money from German companies looking to take advantage of a loophole in German tax law that allowed the companies to write off losses from the movie on their taxes. The loophole in the tax law has since been closed, but all of the movies he's doing now were grandfathered in because they were announced before the loophole was closed. The good news, once his current crop of movies is done, he will either have to start making good movies or you won't see him around much anymore.

Those are some decent actors / actresses, so I'm wondering how the hell does he sign these people on!? He must either have connections or a ton of money to throw around. Dungeon Siege? Aww, I liked that game.

FYI, Uwe Boll funds his movies with his production company. I think he also recieves funding from the german government.

As for myself, I don't mind that this guy makes crappy movies. I'm more concerned with the fact that game companies are too easily willing to sell-out the game-to-movie rights of their game franchises to him. On that note, I applaud Hideo Kojima for not jumping in the band wagon and refusing to let Uwe Boll think that he would someday direct a MGS movie.

who on gods earth is giving this man money and why? that money could go to charity or to help some struggling country but no, its given to uwe boll so he can make some steaming pile of crap that will make watchers want to claw their eyes out. i watched about 2 minutes of house of the dead and was stunned that it wasnt just released in the "straight to video-hell" format, watched a little alone in the dark the other day and thought christian slater-career over, tara reid-you have to have a career first. anyway, he sucks obviously and has no vision as a director that would be taken seriously, he has a loooong way to go and when he reaches that point nobody will care because of all the eye-torture he has given us in the past.

It's astounding that Uwe Boll is still alive, never mind that he's able to work in hollywood. You'd think someone would have pulled a jack ruby on him and taken him out of our collective misery by now. The man is literally the kiss of cinematic death; a true Ed Wood of gaming movies.

hey maybe he will get lucky and one of his movies wont be a flop.if you make 10 movies one has to be rated higher than 5.but he is the ed wood jr of our time.so I wouldnt expect to much out of any of his films.also something about the movie plan 9 from outer space.the critics said even if the movie had some talented actors.it wouldve never made any difference since the script was crap.ed wood ended up doing porno films after he failed so maybe boll could do that.

All 3 of Uwe Boll game to cinema movies was terribly bad. Even movies like Mortal Kombat & Resident Evil were 100x's better then those 3 crappy films. MR Boll needs to give up on directing and maybe try a new career.

I remember I saw House of the Dead in the theater. It was the only movie I have every walked out of, and I love zombie movies. Then I saw Alone in the Dark, not knowing it was the same director, now I'm well aware of Boll and really like that GameSpot has these articles about him, so I can easily avoid his movies at all costs. Sometimes I watch horror movies and they are bad, but in some way they entertain me. Boll's movies just plain suck, not entertaining at all. Like many other people posting here I wish he would just disappear. The guy is awful at making movies, but he gets more and more money, I agree with some the others that brought up the idea that maybe there is some kind of agenda here other than making terrible movies. What investor is going to give Boll 20 million and just watch him piss it down the toilet. OK I'm done, I don't want think about this idiot anymore.

I really wonder if Uwe Boll isn't just Jack Thompson in guise. What better way to ruin video games if your lawsuits just get shot down? Create very very very bad video game movies and hope everyone runs away from gaming. If Uwe isn't Jack, then they must be related somehow. Both are out to kill the game industry one way or another...
