Quake Wars slips again

After years of uncertainty, Activision revises the next Enemy Territory's ship window yet again.

During a conference call today, Activision revealed it now expects Enemy Territory: Quake Wars to ship during the July-September quarter, the second of its fiscal year. Though, like all id Software titles, its official release date is "when it's done," Activision had previously planned that it would come out by the end of June.

The slip was not totally unexpected, as online retailers such as GameStop.com now list Quake Wars as shipping in mid-July. Originally developed as a PC-only title, the oft-delayed game is now being ported to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Under id's supervision, Splash Damage is developing the PC original, with Nerve Software and Z-Axis handling the 360 and PS3 versions, respectively.

In other id news, it was widely reported by many outlets--including GameSpot--today that the developer had revealed previously unknown game tech. This was based on Gamesindustry.biz coverage of a London event, where Todd Hollenshead has revealed that id's next game, which was revealed in 2004, was based on an "all-new engine." In fact, the game's engine was first revealed last year--GameSpot regrets the error.

Have heard of Splash Damage & Nerve Damage before, which means that both of the PC & Xbox 260 versions will be impeccable. I haven't heard of Z-Axis, which means, along with the impossibility of making a perfect "converted" port for the PS3, that the PS3 port will be crap!

I don't see what all the complaining is about. At the end of the day would you rather have a crappy game or a top notch one???

It's common sense people they would rather you wait then be disappointed

Its a pity people dont learn to code things without bugs from the beginning but sadly we humans dont work that way. Pity. The summer's always a bit of a lull anyway. So I'll just pick up a game or two I missed last year.

    @StatBurke

do you know how long it takes to make a game, let alone any functioning software package?

i am currently in yr 12 and do software at school, ive got a major work for it, ive been working on it for a good 6 months, and its still no where near what i want it to be.

the dev process takes so long, people dont realise the kind of work that needs to be done, it isnt just 'oh, lets go make this, and do it fast'. if that happens, u get crappy games, there is so much time spent in testing, bug fixing and problem solving (you wouldnt believe the number of issues ive had) that thinking that a developer can put a game out in under 18months and have it run fine with no issues is an absoloute joke, especially on projects as large as game development

This is a bit off topic but does anyone know when Half Life 2: Episode 2 is due to ship? Or even why the massive delays? These constant delays with FPSs just amaze me, no matter the developer or publisher. They should come up with a reasonable timetable to create a first class game and THEN add about a year on to it to take into account their abysmal track records of meeting initial release dates. Enough with the constant feature creep in this genre (I'm looking at you Duke Nukem Forever).

July 10th is what they have as the release date, but after its been pushed back from march 07 to june 6th 07 now to july 10th 07 it wouldn't surprise me if they pushed it back to september or beyond. It better be damn good when it's released I'm talking nominee for game of the year. When it's done, better include "When it's done it'll be the **** for as long as we've had to wait. Plus a lot of great shooters are coming out in the july-september period Bioshock, crysis, huxley and so on.

I hope it's done soon. It should get released before Halo 3 comes out or its Xbox 360 reception won't be very good. I really want to play this game on the Xbox 360..provided my 360 doesn't breakdown again by that time!!

ugh... They need to hurry up, or else it won't be out in time for QuakeCon! If they can make it before August, they'll have a better chance at an extra 3000 sales, just because people will want to play it, and because they'll want to get a feel for it before any kind of tournament.

A few have commented that they feel it has been delayed due to the console ports. I'm not sure there is not a lot of reason for them to do that, as distribution for PC and consoles are different enought to launch one without the other. They are being handled by two teams after all.
I wish I lived in malmeid2's fantasy world of programming. He sure makes it seem simple. Maybe everyone needs to go to DeVry.
I hope that everyone knows (PC gamers, console users, everybody looking forward to this...) that the hype surrounding this game will never let it live up to what everyone is expecting. I am sure that if Quake Wars would have come out last year or before we would all be blown away, but it will take a major overhaul to make three year old tech shine again when it is released with Huxley, Crysis, and many other shiney new games this fall...

An extra month of end-development does not mean they're adding new stuff or making the "game better." What that means is that the game is very buggy and they need more time to fix it. It's a combination of a bad sign cause the game is too buggy to ship but also a good thing that they're admiting that they need more time.

  • Jade_Monkey

I can wait a little longer as long as the wait helps the quality of the game.

Im with SuperTramp707 , You know there are teams of IBM software engineers going out right now and Showing these game studios how to program the PS3's Cell technology to get the best out of it because its soo damn hard. Im sure it takes more than " A FEW DAYS " to complete a port

I'll bet the PC version has been finished for a long time, now we just have to wait for the console kiddies.
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I think they have software that translates everything from PC files to the consoles, and the transition doesn't really take that long. I mean consoles really are just a specific type of PC. It can't possibly take more than a few days to port over and then test for bugs for a few more days. There is probably not much difference at all between the way the files are composed on a PC dvd compared to an Xbox dvd, aside from the installation data and a few extra "access codes" for the xbox...
