DS Wi-Fi users pass 5 million mark

Nintendo's free wireless service reaches milestone; Animal Crossing: Wild World and Mario Kart DS proving enduringly popular.

More than 200 million gaming sessions have been played worldwide over Nintendo's wireless gaming service, by more than 5 million unique DS owners, reports Nintendo.

Of the 62 DS games that can be played over a wireless connection, the five most popular globally are Animal Crossing: Wild World, Mario Kart DS, Metroid Prime: Hunters, Pokemon Diamond, and Pokemon Pearl, says the company.

According to NPD figures, the DS was the top-selling game system in April in the US, with more than 470,000 units sold--roughly 16,000 a day.

The Nintendo Wi-Fi service was launched in North America, Europe, and Australia in November 2005. Users can connect to other gamers worldwide to play a variety of games over the Internet.

The Nintendo DS Browser, a version of the Opera browser for the original DS and DS Lite, was launched in Japan in July 2006, in Europe in October 2006, and in Australia in January 2007. It will be coming to North America on June 4.

ya it is really too bad how much nintendos online sucks. in my opinion nintendo is doing to much to protect your identity, i mean really all you get is a user name and a picture is mario cart. but thats just me. Also games are boring with out communication. for example if i red shell som1 in mario cart i like to yell ohhhh!!! or somthing like that but all you can really do is yell to urself.

Nintendo's online gaming sucks though. I don't know why it takes me nearly 5 minutes to connect to their server and actually start a game. what a waste of time. They really need to work on it alot still, especially if they're planing on actually using the internet for online play on their console.

~Same here. Because of it I now know not to rush out and get a system as soon as possible. I do hope Nintendo makes their wi-fi capabilities more user-friendly than the whole friend code thing. Its sad the Wii is using the same method to online gaming.

What happened to the PSP? I guess graphics lost to gamplay in this one. Looks like how the Wii will win too?

P.S. Sony screwed me over with the PSP!

It's understandable: the hardcore gamers are the ones online. Most casual gamers don't care. With the DS, Nintendo made a quality system that appeals to the hardcore and the casual gamer, so it makes sense that a small percentage would be playing. Though they could use better service and stuff, the games tend to be pretty good, so I'll consider this to be a victory for Nintendo, especially considering their relative inexperience in the area.

How is compare XboxLive? Xboxlive has 6 million users but they didn't give out paid user details. I think paid users top with 2 million

Very nice, but it would be a massive number if FCs were gone

Perhaps, I'm sure Nintendo would if they could build the sort of online environment they wanted. FCs may be overly restrictive but thus far it's the best fix on unwanted riff-raff.

as hard as it is for me to believe that only a few games can support the wi-fi function and the DS still crunches numbers... yea... the masses speak for themselves.

maybe the masses should demand something else instead of quietly waiting for lame milestones

Wow, I was right all along. When the DS came out, everyone said it would fail, except for me. When the wii came out, everyone told me it was a gimmick, and that I shouldn't waste my money. I disagreed. Now look at things! Hindsight is always 20/20.

they should have some sort of permission form online that you can sign so you get a game browser instead of this friend code crap. really hate not seeing proper online with nintendo's current consoles.

people who think that a large number of people being online and it being free makes how poor the online for DS is need to cut the crap. nintendo has always ruled the handheld market, people simply don't really have a choice. i join a ds, hate the way online works... but dont have a choice. well unless the games on ds make it to the psp. i hope sony does better so nintendo can get unlazy, hopefullly stop gettign away with numerous versions of every handheld they make equailing increased sales.

So when is the DS going to fail? I recall it being said that "it's going to end up like the Game Gear!"

Fanboys are amusing.

I like how fanboys are saying "well, it's successful but it sucks because I have online gaming that I pay for."

You don't like it, that's your problem. Nintendo WiFi connection is simple, easy to use (for most people, anyway) and is FREE. If you're not paying for it then quit complaining.

I own both a DS Lite and a PSP.

The main reason i picked up a DS was because of Dragon Quest IX!
Imagine the Wi fi multiplayer games on that? Its gonna be like a MMORPG!

Its a shame about the PSP really, Sony should focus on getting more multiplayer games for it (Infrastructure mode), thats the only reason why i play games now.

Heres hoping that Monster Hunter Freedom 2 finally has Infrastructure mode added

The Nintendo WIFI is really cool, although I wish people wouldn't quit when they know they're going to lose a game. All told, I can't wait to see Nintendo use the WIFI to it's full potential.

Mario Kart DS was so great playing online, the only time I stopped (and I stopped for a loooooooong time) was when my R button was totally broken.

Ha, what else can I say, except that the DS is the greatest portable of all time. Forget about the Sorry PSP, I mean the Sony PSP. That portable is not even going to last for 3 years. PSP is going to be the next N-Gage. The only portable that gave Nintendo the biggest threat was the Sega Game Gear when it was first released. As for Microsoft, they don't even have a portable to challenge the allmighty DS. At least Microsoft was wise not to release one because they would get creamed like the psp. Sony's portable is only good for movies but even then, there arent any good quality ones. Whats worse is that there arent enough good games for it. Im going to get a lot of hate response from other people, but thats ok because I don't have time to write back to you Sony and MS fans. To all the Nintendo fans out there: Wiire here to stay!

Tetris DS is still my favorite though, because the matches are quick enough for me to play during my lunch hour at work.

Sux that I'm not able to enjoy Advance Wars DS with wi-fi....it really pisses me off. Got almost 300 hours on that game and it would be double the ammount if I were able to play against people across the globe.

Age Of Empires and Pyuo Pop would also be awesome to have wi-fi on.
