Second Life creator nabs Windward Mark tech, founders

WindLight, Nimble simulators to be incorporated into Linden Labs online world; status of developer's PC first-person shooter Alliance: The Silent War in flux.

The fate of PC first-person shooter Alliance: The Silent War is in question as five key employees from developer Windward Mark Interactive have left to join Second Life creator Linden Labs.

The move comes in a deal that also sees Linden Labs acquire the rights to Windward Mark's atmospheric rendering technology WindLight, as well as the 3D cloud simulator Nimble. These technologies will be incorporated into Second Life in the coming weeks, as well as made open source.

The five employees were founders of Windward Mark, and they'll join Linden Labs' newly established Boston studio. As for Alliance: The Silent War, Windward Mark will retain the rights to the project, but a representative with the developer said it is currently determining what it would like to do with the intellectual property.

For more on Alliance, check out GameSpot's coverage of the game from last year's Electronic Entertainment Expo.

Yes, it's still running, and has a few million active accounts now. And what furries are? Furries are creepy. But some of them are family... so i digress. /tolerance

Stupid E-life. Now one of my most anticipated PC games is in jeopardy because of it.

Hopefully the game comes out. If someone else buys the intellectual rights, I doubt the new devs would make the same game the original ones intented it to be.

All I can say is: f*ck you Second Life. f*ck you for as long as you exist!

Second life is a place where people who failed at real life go to try to fit in. I mean look at how much people get upset over "greifing". They treat it like they had been Violated in real life. And what is the point of Second life anyways? at least in an MMO you have something going on. A storyline, quests ect.. in second life it's just people running around aimlessly trying to be cool and failing at that even in a game. It is a Fury infested wasteland of nothingness. -------------------

    QFT man!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ahahah this dude thinks sony can actually do something right... thats funny. The time and money it will take to build "PS3 Home" is WAY beyond what Sony is willing to invest. but hey, like all sony fans you can keep hoping

@ silvarius What's wrong with furies? Ever hear of Yiff? How about Fursona? Or even better yet Fur suits? You can't tell me that something like that is normal. Let's face facts here Furies fail at life.

And for the record I don't play anything by EA. I don't like Madden, or NBA Live, or any other EA game because they are all pretty much Trash. I am not a big FPS person either I play all kinds of games. FPS, RPGs, Action, Adventure, Point and Click adventure, Old School (like 2600 to modern classics), Strategy, and most of all fighters.

Second Life blows a dead goat. It is not even a d@mn game. I wish to h*ll it would just die and go away. It is ugly and runs like cr@p. It's UI is cr@p. It's graphics are cr@p. It is cr@p.

Well this terrible excuse of a game just pissed on you. Whats wrong with Furries and why would you care if you dont know how to get around in Second Life? Go back to your cheap ass fps and strategy and submit to your EA gods. Need proof? Look at your releases. At least I'm playing this for free and getting income from my shop.

So far, I can only find two ways of making SL run smoothly.

    1. Minimize the screen to almost 1/4 size.
    2. Look directly up. Though with this being incorporated, this strategy will probably not work. Honestly guys, I don't mind the bad graphics, funky interface and I actually like hanging out with totally f'd up people, but PLEASE just get rid of the lag. I'd most likely play your game incredibly often if you did so. And also made the character customization a lot less glitch, or really, actually fuctional.

I tried Second Life once. I lasted about 4 days before I got so bored I thought I was entering a bout of depression. The cloud lifted as soon as I uninstalled this malevolent piece of...software. Maybe they will figure out how such a crap looking 'game' runs so horribly.

So now all the furries and child predators will have nice weather effects? Or is Linden just want some real programmers to make SL not run like crap?
