SOCOM breaches PS3

Online-only Confrontation set to arrive at retailers; on PlayStation Store this holiday season.

While Sony Computer Entertainment America used its Gamers Day media event this week to give the press the chance to get hands-on time with titles like Uncharted: Drake's Fortune and Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction, it was also a chance to announce new games. Specifically, during a presentation to the assembled media, Sony announced the much-anticipated PlayStation 3 debut of its SOCOM franchise of tactical shooters, SOCOM: Confrontation.

In a brief presentation to the assembled press, the game's director of development Seth Luisi introduced a trailer for Confrontation, saying the game had been in development for only four or five months so far. The trailer featured rifle-and-bazooka-toting soldiers shooting up an open-air Middle Eastern market and showed off the gameplay from several angles.

Luisi explained that the goal of Confrontation was to create "the ultimate SOCOM online experience," and to that end, the game will only be playable online. What's more, the game will actually be purchasable online, as Sony plans to make it available through the PlayStation Network, as well as through traditional retail outlets.

SOCOM: Confrontation will feature team-based combat for up to 32 players, multiple international special forces units, customizable appearances, and clan-specific options, such as uniforms. Luisi also said the game "takes full advantage" of the Sixaxis motion-sensing controller and the PS3 hard drive.

Finally, Luisi said the game would be supported long after its release with regular downloadable theme packs for sale through the PlayStation Store. While he wasn't specific, he did say the packs would include new modes, special forces, customization options, and weapons.

Sony is planning on showing more of SOCOM: Confrontation off at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in July, with the final release of the game set for this holiday season. For more of the upcoming PS3 lineup, check out GameSpot's full coverage of SCEA's Gamers Day 2007.

    ZedFragg: Note that it says these screens are from the game in its first 5 months in development. THOSE AREN'T THE FINAL GRAPHICS. Of course they will get tweaked more as the game production progresses. Learn to read before you bash a game so much.

    Oh dear god this game looks TERRIBLE graphically...
    I don't normally judge a game on graphics but did anyone TELL this developer that this is actually a NEXT GEN title???....
    Owning both X360 and PS3 I can HONESTLY say to you *jtizzleword* that there is ALOT of different between this and a x360 title...too much for words its ridiculously last gen compared to the x360
    and the PS3 is capable of so much more....than THIS....

    Had socom2...Will avoid this as it can't touch COD4...no offence to anyone waiting for it but if they ain't even updated the damn models from the PS2 version what makes anyone think they've updated anything else!...Another Conflict: Denied Ops....

    how can this game be the same as ghost? socom has been the same thing since day1. it could use single player but thats not gunna stop me from buying it. The graphics are awsome and i dont see much if any difference from the 360 graphics and im pumped that they brought back some old maps, hopefully they bring back some of the guns too

    Thank you ,SONY ,Socom is the best online so...BRING IT!!!! But I need some new pictures or some kind of update of the game because i haven't heard anything about the game for months,dont let us down SONY!!!!! I spent a lot of money on your almost useless system...!!!!!!

    This game doesn't look all that great. It looks like a Ghost Recon look alike. And you know that ghost will be better by a long shot. They specialize in this sort of thing

    this is the reason i would buy a ps3. plus i eventually have to have the system. just hope they do some price drop or bundle. i can wait. wii and 360 have to much games to play lol.

    Finally! Wish it had a single player campaign as well but lets face it multiplayer will be AMAZING.

    Finally, I'm glad that PS3 will make socom. S2 was the best and so was S1, CA is ok, you can only play it few hours at a time. Crossroads was my favorite map and I'm glad to see it back, I would like to see all the maps from S2. I will definetly buy ps3, just for this, hopefully they will make more online games for ps3, gta online or tekken online.

    Socom was a great game/series for the PS2.. Online was the only thing that made the game enjoyable.. NOw looking at the footage of Socom: Confrontation the graphics are SICK (sick meaning awesome) and the fact that its only for online, WOW.. Thanks Sony..

    Not a bad appetizer. This should tide me over until the main course arives next winter.

    SOCOM is THE team-based special operations tactical sim. Everything else is irrelavant.

    As chubear700 put it. SOCOM fans care about graphics, as always. BUT - to our beloved series, we care about gameplay. PS3 will have both.

    Wonder how they intend to utilize the SIX-AXIS motion sensing? For sniping? peeking? prone? driving?

    oh yea... NO MONTHLY FEES!!! w00t! now where's my HK-7 with extended clip?

    For the people talking about graphics. We Socom fans don't expect this to be a technological marvel. It looks like it's just an upgrade to current gen for socom fans so they aren't focusing on the graphical looks but more on bringing socom gameplay to the current gen which would mean better animations, textures, less lag etc. while we wait for the pure choclate goodness that is Socom 4. Now that's when you're going to see some nice graphics. SOCOMS BACK! WOOOOOOOOOTTTTTT!!!!

    i hope its like socom 2 instead of socom 3 and combines assault with those giant maps. straight up camp feast. i dont even like that they do'n 32 players but..... hopefully it will be like socom 2. lookin foward 2 it...get it? "2" it.... socom "2" it lol haaa haa

    Who the hell actually wants to play SC's single player campaign?? I'm so glad they made this game online only. SC was and never will be meant to be great single player campaign experience. Its meant to be a great online experience. I never even played SC1 and 2's single player campaign missions. The first thing I did was play online and that was it. It was'nt till SC3 and Combined Assualt that I played the campaign fully through (which sucked). And that was only because you had to beat the game to get new weapons online. The only thing that bothers me is that Zipper is'nt involed with this game.

    Your right chuck1212 and Nos14x, my bad. I was thinking about Rainbow Six which came out a few years before SOCOM. Anyway SOCOM is a great game, I love it especially online. Its just ridiculous how bad and how quick Sony/Zipper let this game get hacked every time. It ruins the game and takes all the fun out of playing online. I just saying there track record for support is REALLY bad and I hope they don't screw this one up. Cant wait to play it if they don't hack it so I don't have to waste my money. Thats the only reason I like GRAW on 360 better. No hacks = fun 2 play.

    Instead of making its SP campaign a decent experience they just decided to dump it altogether. Since I have no interest in playing online and the rest of the games from PS2 that I liked now multiplatform, that's likely the end of interest in the PS3 for me for a very long time. This was a HUGE mistake by SCEA. You're not going to get people to purchase a console with an online game that has no story, especially when the online system is by any measure vastly inferior to XBox Live.

    okay, for anyone to say graw is ALOT better than this is stupid. just watched the trailer and really thought i was watching ghost recon, they look almost identical and this game has only been in development for 4 or 5 months?! not only than but consider this, graw 2 should have been a huge map-pack considering they did nothing to change the game other-wise (they look and sound almost exactly the same, graw 2s explosions look better and thats about it), so quit raining on sony fans parade and be happy we have something to play. fanboys will be fanboys i suppose.

    I like SOCOM and I like GRAW2. But the truth is, SOCOM will probably get hacked as all 4 of the others have been hacked on PS2. Sony and Zipper have done a horrible job of keeping the integrity of the SOCOM games. From promised FREE downloads with SOCOM 2 that they made you buy a magazine to get, promised downloads for SOCOM 3 that never showed up and finally glitches, hacks and cheaters. I would hope that with this new version Sony/Slant Six could get this game fixed, but I seriously doubt it. Ubisoft seems to just know how to make a good war game. I would love to play a good SOCOM game, but I'll sit on the fence for this one till after its been out for a few months. Oh yeah NOS14x Ghost Recon was around long before SOCOM.

    Ok now why are all 360 fans saying G.R.A.W is better than Socom? Well just so you know Socom made the military shooters. No matter what you say about how great G.R.A.W is Socom will always remain king. Socom started online gaming and the headset. If Socom wasnt here then you would just have to play a game by yourself. Besides who cares if people say G.R.A.W looks better, this new Socom was only in development for 4-5 months. And besides between the end of the year and now i guarantee it will look better than any other military shooter on the market. All 360 owners will be speechless when this game comes out. Socom is the best and always will be the best online shooter.

    I`m sooo sick of you xbox fan boys its just sad.No matter what sony dose it never good enough.G.r.a.w. ISN`T FOR EVERYONE.Some people like me have been waiting for a ps3 socom.Hell if Socom should have been a launch title then one could say the same for Halo 3 about the 360.Plus you fan boys might want to remember the ps3 is still doing better than the ps2 first 6 months too.Plus the 360 is set to have its biggest year right now,but what about 08,09 10,11?The games on any system (wii as well) have not been all that.No MGS,DMC,GTA,HALO, TYPE bomb game.Gears of War was the closest thing and it still didn`t move 360`s like gta moved ps2`s.Long story short sit back watch who really has the long term game plan vs the people who wanted to get back in the game as quick as they could.because 06 was a joke,07 looks great but the new games wont be seen till 08 and thats what next gen is all about not remakes.

    as an hardcore socom fan i hope they get rid of the rank up cheaters and code magic users they ruined what was a game online game, Zipper lied to us for years about fixing the ranking system and supporting it lets hope this time around things will be different

    I like how Sony is using the PSN to release these types of games. I like the Xbox Live Arcade and the Wii Virtual Console, but this is [nearly] full games being released. They may only be multiplayer (I referring to Warhawk as well as SOCOM), but I like how Sony is showing that full games can come through digital downloads. I just hope they eventually come up with a way for us to back these up...
