PS3 Stranglehold getting Hard Boiled

$70 Collector's Edition of Midway's action game will come with a high-def version of John Woo's classic action film; new exclusive trailer inside.

This summer, Midway Games expects to ship Stranglehold for the PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3. Today, gamers sitting on the fence about which version to buy got an incentive to pick up the PS3 version--or, more accurately, the special Collector's Edition for the PS3.

Stranglehold: CE

Check out this exclusive trailer for the PS3 edition

Like many collector's editions, Stranglehold: CE will have special packaging and a slightly higher price point of $69.99, $10 more than the regular version. However, the boxed set will have one major extra--a full-length copy of Hard Boiled, a 1992 Hong Kong action film. Both the game and the movie will be on the same Blu-ray disc.

Directed by John Woo, Hard Boiled follows Inspector "Tequila" Yuen, a maverick Hong Kong police detective, as he brings down a ring of vicious gunrunners. Though it features some similar scenes, including a take on the iconic tea house shootout, Strangehold is intended as a sequel to the film. In both, Tequila is played by Chow Yun-Fat, whose likeness, voice, and motion-captured movements appear in the game, which is being codeveloped by Woo's Tiger Hill games studio and Midway Chicago.

Stranglehold: Collector's Edition will mark the first time a game and Blu-ray movie have been released in a single package. In North America, the initial run of PS3 hardware came bundled with a Blu-ray version of Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby. In the UK, the launch batch of PS3s included a copy of the latest James Bond film, Casino Royale. According to recent video-industry news reports, Blu-ray sales are currently outpacing those of the rival HD-DVD format, which is supported by Xbox 360 maker Microsoft.

DAMMIT!!!!!!! When are they gonna put this thing out already?!?!?!?!?? It's been pushed back for the PS3 'til 10/30/07!!!! WTF?!?!??!!!!! This is the hap-hazard of the multi-platform "next-gen" games being built on on the 360, instead of building it on EACH system, like it should be!!

Interesting. Usually when I have a choice of platforms for a game I lean toward the XBOX 360 or PC version. The XBOX 360 versions tend to have superior online capabilities and a greater likelihood of having additional content (or mods for PC games) released later down the line (a la Marvel Ultimate Alliance or The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion).

Then again, I seldom buy Collector's Editions, so I'm probably not in their target audience anyway.

"xcollector" You haven't seen Hardboiled, it's one of the greatest gun films of all time. It has the longest uncut continuous gun battle sequence in film history. Literally like 5 -10 minutes of continuous gun battle with one unbroken Stedi-cam shot. To this day no other film has ever managed to beat that record. Just the Hardboiled HD film alone is worth the purchase, consider the game a bonus. Because the film alone is worth well over $30.

If you can read the title, you'd know that yes, it is HD
    and thats awesome.

this game so far looks awesome and looks to have a lot of replayablility.

Oh yeah: the creator of folding @ home said that the 360 isn't as powerful as the PS3. You probably won't see it here until Microsoft gives them their script to tell them to say it the other way around. http://www.pro-g.co.uk/news/03-05-2007-5386.html

If the PS3 can handle Lair, it can donkey-punch Alan Wake. BTW, if the DVD-9 is more than enough space for games, then why isn't the 360 version at least getting a regular DVD version of the movie on their game?

    Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm?

@ xcollector. if you're saying the movie HARD BOILED sucks. you have obviously not watched it. HARD BOILED is one of the most classic action movies and one of john woo's best. and it is old. saying the movie is gonna suck does not make sense cuz. the movie came out since............and it rocked. duh! BLU-RAY is pwning HD DVD and that's a fact. smart move SONY. the delicious power fo BLU-RAY. I cannot wait for this! along with the other gorgeous ps3 games from gamer's day! omg!

Usually movies are not bundled with games because they can make a lot of money without the help of games and games based on movies are sold separately to milk the franchise dry.

I'm not a fan of this title but I have this gut feeling that either the game is going to really suck or the movie. I get the impression that one is suppose to carry the other. If they are both A+ material then this is definitely a deal. But...

Will this video play in any blu-ray player or just through the in game menu on the PS3?

    That is the question.

I quite like the idea of having a movie on a game disc as a special pack, But I hate the fact that there is a new format divide. Those of you who have a ps3, and a high-def tv setup who want to watch lord of the rings in high-def... cant... new line cinema is for HDDVD... and those of you who have a 360 or hddvd player can't watch things like casino royale in high-def, or have a movie and a game on one disc.

Its a console war, but now its a movie war too.

This article, at the end, kinda didn't need to mention the fact that bluray sells more... just spout out some gaming news, not media banter, save that for CNET. Ah, I am just irritated this evening, especially with dividing properties of the movie market.

If it wasn't for sony and toshiba fighting over discs, then the 360 would have the movie on the disc too... Not that its important, but this article kinda makes other things inferior because "bluray sells more" and "has a movie on the game disc"... etc.

I like gamespot when it sees the story from both sides, they took a look at the sony launch and e3 presentations and had a chuckle about it. Then, a miriage of negative comments and news about the ps3's "progress".. I saw that as being a bit amusing coming from gamespot.

BUT, then when the ps3 has some seriously good news, its like "pro ps3" and just grabs up some negative facts about other things instead.

Gah, I hate rivalry, side switching and disc-format nonsense... I like to read stuff like "oooh, stranglehold comes with free movie!" not "bluray sales are better than hddvd.."

It is for this reason that CNET has the news, and gamespot has the games

And obviously your opinion was not though out at all before you spewed out that crap on us Bronson2k3.

Oh, and if you click on the link that says "Blu-ray sales are currently outpacing those of the rival HD-DVD format" you would be able to figure out that they are talking about high-definition discs...or Blu-Ray discs. And, this has nothing to do with Sony "being cheap" as, last time I checked, the publisher & the developer are Midway not Sony.

TTDog if i am not mistaken the blu ray player is in the PS3 so it does show the power of the PS3 do u know why because that is 1 thing the 360 does not have and that is the thing that makes it more worthwhile than the 360 ur always hating on the PS3 just shh-hut-your-mouth.

so technically, it's the world's first 10 dollar blu-ray disc. i doubt it'll have any extras for that price. one thing i don't like is how they had to throw that last sentence in there. microsoft doesn't support hd-dvd really. it offers the option, but doesn't include it, and i don't know any people who have bought the extrernal drive. also, no games have been released that take advantage of it. it's not really a priority over at m-soft, so it's kind of annoying to throw that morsel in there for nerdy fanboys to argue over in the forums.

    To "Intrakitt "

    and your point is?????

Hard Boiled is a great movie who cares how old it is. And once more you can pick up a DVD version for cheep but in this package you get the movie in HD. So those with an HDTV will benefit from it.

If you do not have an HDTV or already own Hard Boiled then you can pick up the regular edition. Everyone happy now? Yes. Good!

  • Intrakitt

    Posted May 18, 2007 4:40 am PT

You still have to pay 10 extra bucks for it...You can buy Hard Boiled for ten bucks or less now..That movie is almost a decade old now...

This will be great, maybe sometime The Simpsons game Collector's Edition released on PS3 with The Simpsons movie and the game on one Blu-Ray Disc? Anyone?

  • TTDog

    Posted May 18, 2007 2:57 am PT

Including the movie on the game disk doesn't do anything to show the power of the PS3 (as was suggested by someone further down)... it just shows the amount of additional storage space on a Blu-Ray disk that isn't neede to play the game.

  • seamusb

    Posted May 18, 2007 2:54 am PT

Adding in the movie like this is a great way to support the Blu-ray in the PS3. It would be very cool if this could be done with other movie/ game crossovers. Although it would have to be old ones, companies aren't likely to do new movies since the games are released alone side them when they hit cinemas. So how about Conan?

  • diablobasher

    Posted May 18, 2007 2:41 am PT

This could be done easily by including a DVD of the movie with the 360 game. My guess is whoever's behind the movie is backing Blu-Ray.

When all is said and done, i really could care less, regular DVD quality is fine for me, i dont even have an HDTV, the biggest i have is a 1440x900 laptop screen, and a 1024x768 PC Monitor/TV Combi which i play my 360 on via VGA cable.

While this may be in the PS3 favor, the games are already very expensive, and an additional tenner for something that requires no extra work (Burn movie to disc, done) It will have to be one helluva special edition case to warrant the extra money, considering you can get Hard Boiled on DVD for less than the extra cost of the Special Edition.

Regardless, this looks to be a great game no matter what console you get it on, Max Payne on steroids

grandgundam3: There's a reason: DVD9 couldn't hold both the game and the movie on the disc. They could maybe put in an HD-DVD version, unless of course, the company that makes the movie is exclusively backing Blu-Ray. Who IS the studio behind "Hard Boiled" anyway? )

    There's also the problem that:

Not all 360 owners have the HD-DVD player, so it'd be a bit pointless to add it in that way as well. I doubt people would go out and buy a $70 game, and a $200 add on for JUST one movie. At least with the PS3, everyone who owns one, also has a Blu-Ray player.

I've seen Hard Boiled, and loved it. I'm disappointed, however, that only PS3 owners get the movie, especially since Stranglehold is a multi platform game, and anyone planning to pick this up who hasn't seen Hard Boiled should, no wait, must watch it. Now if Stranglehold were an exclusive, it'd be a different story...
