Prince of Persia leaps to Live Arcade

Mobile developer Gameloft charged with creating a next-gen remake of original Jordan Mechner classic.

Last month, Germany's interactive entertainment game rating board passed judgment on an unannounced game called Prince of Persia Classic for the Xbox 360. The game is unannounced no longer, because Ubisoft today confirmed that it will indeed find its way to Xbox Live Arcade early this summer.

As one might expect, the game is a remake of Jordan Mechner's 1989 computer game, albeit with a layer of next-gen polish. The level design, swordfighting, and time limit of the original will remain the same, while character designs, animation, and other graphical overhauls provide a twist on the familiar. There will also be some new puzzles, traps, and enemies added to the mix.

Perhaps more surprising than the game's announcement is its developer, mobile gaming specialist Gameloft, publisher of Paris Hilton's Diamond Quest (nee Jewel Jam). While the company is new to the Xbox 360, it has handled the Prince of Persia style of gameplay before, specifically in 2003's Prince of Persia Harem Adventures for mobile phones.

Prince of Persia Classic has been rated T for Teen. According to Ubisoft, the game has not yet been priced.

I am positively hooked to the new Prince of Persia Classic. I've already completed it several times, and now I would love them to remake Prince of Persia 2 on the 360. Also, since POP 2 had voice actors, maybe they can bring that feature into the sequel to POPC. Of course it's optional.

This is Video Game Hall of Fame material, no doubt about it. It should be a worth a purchase for those who haven't played it before and fans of the original.

Yeah! Sony is awesome and Microsoft sucks! Oh, wait, is it the other way around? I can't tell anymore. Oh yeah, I don't care anymore. I love going to read other gamer's opinions of a news item or game related story only to find more fanboys duking it out over their consoles...again. Lame.
On that note, Its been like, 15 years since I played the origional Prince of Persia. If the game plays like the origional, I don't care what it looks like. Talk about old school challenge. Now, how bout giving us Out of this World....

So when Sony dropped the Basic PS3 there by upping the price $100 and giving you 40gig more space and WiFi...that was a deal?

Your right...$600 for a game console that does things I don't need or want is much better.

Then again...it might explain why I have a 360 and PS2 at the cottage and not a PS3.

This is great news, if done right prince of persia could be a great xbla game, as long as it is priced sensibly at 400-800 points, not 1200 points.

jamalnos Guys, please wake up and know the truth, Xbox 360 machine is less price than PS3, that is true but why? I will tell you.

With Xbox 360 If you want to communicate by wireless you must buy it separately, if you want to attach removable memories cards or flashes you must buy another part separately, if you want to see HD movies you must buy another part separately, if you want to save game progress or any other files you must buy a HDD separately, beside no HDMI port yet, and that huge power adapter (where will you put it?). At the end your Xbox 360 will be like a spider web with the devices attached into it . Finally all of that will be the same price of PS3 or more.

But in the PS3 side, all of that is built-in inside it. With Blu ray technology, HDMI technology, 1080p technology, CELL Processor (Parallel Power) technology, PS & PS2 emulation power, user friendly interface and that sexy design.
So what is the mistake that Sony did?
    ----------------------------------------
Have you even seen the Xbox360? One the wireless controller comes with the premium pack along with a headset and the harddrive and honestly the power brick is far from a problem for anyone who OWNS a 360. Two your a PS3 fanboy this is an Xbox360 game discussion dont bring that crap here we dont want to hear it if your not speaking about the game in question (PoP for XBLA) than leave and take your blantant fanboyism somewhere else. And three sony messed up by FORCING you to go buy all that at one STEEP HIGH price. Microsoft does it buy allowing you the choice if i know i dont watch HD-DVD anyway whats the use in having it in my console? Same with the Blu-Ray that media will never overthrow DVD or HD-DVD for that matter. Microsoft gives you a choice and honestly I hate being forced for that matter alone I wont be purchasing a PS3 anytime soon not until i see a BIG price drop and some deeper well rounded games this is comming from a GAMER not a FANBOY im open to all systems. Thats what makes me better than you.

OK, now I wan't an Xbox 360. And I'm not kidding either. The original prince of persia has some serious nostalgia value to me... I remember playing it on this really old computer with like three colors - I believe it was orange black and gray or something. Good times. Haha, anyone remember the choppers?!

mjwickstorm1, thank you for your article and for your nice behavior in writing.
Simple, I did not write about headsets or other like accessories, I wote about memory slots not memory cards it self. And that is the idea :
    "XBOX 360" + "its accessories" = "PS3". 600 $ or more ≈ 600 $

I am with you, that every console has its advantages and disadvantages. which is the action

PoP Classic should be a great gameon the XBLA! I can't wait for it!

@ jamainos: The wireless 360 headset comes with the $400 package. Also, to you have to buy memory cards for the PS3 as well, not just with the 360, and even if you bought the HDD Drive it's the same amount of money as the $600 PS3! And the 360's power brick isn't even that big; you're overexagerating so be quiet from now on and think before you talk!

I just bought the original last week on ebay. This is one of my favorite games. For once, something different... not japanese & not NA. This is awsome. Too bad I don't buy anything of XBLA

  • PacoL250

    Posted May 15, 2007 12:06 am PT

Perfect Dark 64 would eat away at potential sales that Microsoft could still milk from Perfect Dark Zero.

Although honestly, if that's their logic, it's pretty silly. They'd make a whole ton of cash if they re-did Perfect Dark 64 just a little bit and released it like PoP: Classic.

And of course, more PoP is always good

  • km1498

Revolutionary game. The character animations are still smooth today. Should excite those skilled at old-school timing-based twitch platformers rather than the Godsmack soundtracked multiple save point gen-y alladin poopoo of the remakes. They should redo Flashback deus-ex style after this. Jeez, remember how the princess's mouse would be there to help you out? Or the chop-you-in-half razor blades? Gruesome death animations for the orignal, and it's sequel had those frightening flying severed heads. Trailer looks awesome.
