Saints Row 2 rollin' onto PS3, 360 in '08

Sequel to popular Grand Theft Auto-style free-range crime game to debut on both Sony's and Microsoft's consoles next year; PS3 port of original canceled.

Saints Row for the PlayStation 3 is no more. During a conference call with analysts after THQ's earnings report today, CFO Edward Zinser revealed the port, which was originally slated for release during this quarter, has been canceled. He said that as a result the California-based publisher is revising its guidance for the April-June quarter, the first of its fiscal year, downward.

THQ CEO Brian Farrell explained the logic behind the cancellation thusly to analysts: "We think the most important thing for the Saints Row franchise is to have a simultaneous ship into a larger installed base next year," he said. "We think the bigger opportunity is a multiplatform launch."

As one might deduce from Farrell's comments, THQ has reallocated all Saints Row resources at its internal studio, Volition, to work on a sequel. The game, which currently has no official title, will ship simultaneously on the PS3 and 360 sometime next year. Further details on the second Saints Row were scant, with THQ saying only that the game would "utilize Volition's proprietary open-world engine and deliver an all-new cross-platform gaming experience." Farrell did tell analysts the game had been in the works for "some time."

Released last August as a 360 exclusive, Saints Row was praised by critics as being the first free-roaming urban crime game to be worthy of comparison to Grand Theft Auto. It also benefited from the fact no GTA game was released for next-gen consoles in 2006, selling nearly 700,000 copies in the US alone, according to industry research group NPD Funworld. The game has topped over 1 million copies worldwide, and recently achieved Platinum Hits status. Perhaps not so-coincidentally, there are no console versions of Grand Theft Auto planned for 2008.

    I'm going to buy saints row 2 right when it comes out, trust me there will be a lot more freedom lol you are able to be a shemale, now thats what you call freedom. Though I'll stick with a guy, heh heh.

    To me GTA an Saints Row are 2 sweet games who cares if there so much alike now we have 2 of the same type of game coming on the market instead of just one. meaning we dont have to wait so many years for just one to come out! its good in a way aswell if one of the games where s*#t (just say) we still have 1 to fall back on. either way im happy! (smile!)

    Co-op on line throughout the ENTIRE single player campaign, planes, helicopters, a big open city, customizable character, who could ask for more? Saints Row 2 will reign supreme most assuredly. From the looks of the pretentious Gta 4 trailer( the likes of which had some of the most putrid graphics I have ever seen in a so called next gen game) Saints Row 2 will clearly be the better choice.

    Whay all free-roam game is copy of GTA, i play Driver and that is not copy of GTA it has own story and they start first with Playstation DRIVER2 soo ... NEW driver cant be copy of GTA!!! True Crime isnt baut a gagnsta or some bad-player it was baut COP and that i DONT see in GTA!!! Saints Row maybe take IDEAl, but noo gameplay or characters i LOVEEE GTA but they dooo not HOLD UNIVERSE!!!!! I hope soo Saints Row gonna launch many and many more Saint Row franchise!!!!

    i hope he does talk cause it makes it more realistic and makes u look cooler. and julius didnt sell you out he either was trying to kill you or he didnt know you were on the boat but i do know that he set the bomb because if you look closely youll see him look at his watch as he walks away meaning "the bomb will go off soon" Your character doesnt talk because he realy only has time to talk when he does talk in the game and he does have a name but noone cares what it is so they just call him "Playa"...which is kinda stupid because it makes me think youre supposed to type one in but instead it goes with the default Player 1 name so julius just calls you player...lol

    the main charecter did talk, but it wasnt much. he was a man of action, he didnt talk because he didnt have to. im glad he doesnt say anying lame, like suck my D word, B word

    Ive read a lot of comments here saying the caracter doesn't say any thing...
    he does... example... julius calls him and says: are you allright. and the character says something about almost being ran over by a truck....

    make it as good as the original saints row ( but maybey add a few new ways of transport and a few new weopons ), but you have to improve the online!! Oh and one mor thing, I think that they will add a new gang and on the last mission you julius will kill there leader, and then you find out that it is julius's brother!! then his father will come and point a gun at his head and then it will go off on to the credits!!

    also i think the saints are secretly run by the police.
    my reasons are that in a los canalis mission were u steal a truck, troy mentions that cops try that s***t all the time wich means he is part of the police force. soz if u dont believe that

    yeah SAINTS ROW 2 will b hell kool just add the motorbikes, thanks, the bmx, the plane and helicopter and a mission @ the end were u and the saints fight the us army in a war that will b hell cooooooll.
    also add new weapons like flamethrower and chainsaw. also add a jet pack and better cheats

    Let get to the good stuff this game as been around for how many mounths now... like 4. i have been studying this game from back round garphics to how well its played on the online community. As i have been playing this game i have had also the privalige to been able to get some inside scoop of phontom games the creators of saints row. My cousin Matt upholz+ Graphic and backround specialist for saints row really should sep by step on how the game was made and how was it really is if i was to rate this game i would give it a 1-10 an a+.
