Star Wars opens new PSP Battlefront

LucasArts enlists Rebellion's help in bringing sci-fi shooter exclusively to Sony's handheld.

After taking 2006 off, LucasArts' Star Wars: Battlefront series of shooters is returning in 2007, but only on the PlayStation Portable. The publisher today announced that it will release Star Wars Battlefront: Renegade Squadron exclusively for Sony's handheld this fall.

As the only new entry in the series this year, Renegade Squadron will introduce a new character-customization system. Instead of picking from a lineup of regimented character classes, players will be able to tailor their character's weapons, abilities, and equipment to their liking. Renegade Squadron will also be playable online in battles of up to 16 players, so players will be able to pit their customized characters against others' to see which combinations work best.

LucasArts is also adding a new story for the single-player campaign mode, with the Renegade Squadron of the title being a secret group of shady characters running missions for the Rebel Alliance under the command of Han Solo. Battles will take place in a number of settings that should be familiar to fans of the space opera, with mission objectives including sabotage, rescue, and retrieval.

Development on Renegade Squadron is being entrusted to Rebellion, the outfit behind the PSP games Gun Showdown and Miami Vice: The Game. Previous entries in the Battlefront series were developed by Pandemic Studios (Mercenaries, Destroy All Humans!).

    Hopefully it will be better than the last battle front for PSP that one sucked. Still, I have high hopes this will be a good game. Cross your fingers!

    i've played a couple shooters on PSP, and they've been disappointing. Still, Lethal Alliance wasn't that bad, I actually like it. I'll get this game, i think it looks good. I just need to buy a new analog stick, i've still got the one it came with... :' (

    Sorry I'll pass this one up. FPS on handhelds not for me. If this one was coming to the consoles, I'd pick it up though.

    I wish LucasArts would focus on The Force Unleashed then a dumb little PSP game. I don't want to have to wait 'til next Spring.

    I'm going to do a wait and see before I decide on buying this game. Since pandemic isn't doing it and i'm not a big fan of rebellion studios.

    PSP haters will obviously "pass" - like we give a flying F. I'm looking forward to it. I liked the first one, hopefully this will be better with addition of infrastructure.

    it sucks that Pandemic Studios isnt doing this. knowing that they're not i dont have high hopes for this one. i doubt they can pull off another great battlefront compared to the first, especially on the psp.

    Pandemic Studios isn't invovlved??? Hmmm, I hope it is as good as the ones Pandemic Studios came up with. They did such a great job with the first ones! Let's hope and see.

    Finally developers are deciding to us the PSP infrastructure mode. It has been so hap-hazard (but it's such a great feature). Now let's hope it can hold up with 16 players.

    WHAT! Pandemic isin't developing it. I've already lost hope for this game for that reason alone. But i will give them one chance to make this game right or they wil recieve hatemail for the rest of their life. They also better allow clans so my clan from Socom FTB 1 can also play there. GOW will never die ( my clan is called GODS OF WAR).

    I was really looking forward to playing the game on a current gen console. I always enjoyed the series on PS2, and would really get a kick out of it on the 360's abilities. Hopefully they will bring it back to home consoles soon. I hope that Pandemic Studios doesn't lose the chance to develop the game...they did such a good job, over all, with the previous ones.

    I was hoping they would continue with the Battlefront series. Too bad it's only psp. But oh well, hopefully it's good.

    YESSSSSS I CAN'T WAIT. I play Star wars battle front two all the time (on the Xbox and the PSP) and so do alot of my friends I hope this one will be even better. Although that would be pretty hard.

    I think LucasArts is missing out by only putting it out on PSP, But if it is as good as the first 2 I will be happy.

    whoah! Did I just read a positive PSP story? I don't believe it, I just don't believe it. Finally a game that the PSP owners can use to tell those DS nutjobs, "suck my balls." The thought brings a tear to my eye.

    I love anything Star Wars. The Battlefront games were great. The RPG's for the xbox were awesome. Super Star Wars for the SNES was one my favorites tho. They should bring it to the Wii VC!

    I've always loved Star Wars games, actually, you always forget that we are talking about license games here hahaha - their quality is suberp, has always been. Well, if you can forget couple games that was made for new trilogy.... grrr. Yeah, definitely worth a trip to a galaxy far far away with my PSP. And to those who says shooters never turn nice on PSP - go check MGS: PO and Socom, before you make comments like that.

    I don't understand why aren't they putting it on consoles, maybe they'll make a Battlefront 3 on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC. Now I want a PSP, even though that system doesn't have a whole lot of good games. Note to self, I need a PS3 and a PSP before the year is over with because I have a Xbox 360, Wii and DS right now.
