Call for Heroes goes out on Wii

Data Design Interactive picks up port of PC action RPG Pompolic Wars for release later this year.

Data Design Interactive is putting out a Call for Heroes. More specifically, the publisher today announced that it will be publishing a Wii version of the upcoming PC action role-playing game Call for Heroes: Pompolic Wars.

Call for Heroes drops players into a fantasy world that they must save from an interdimensional invasion force under the command of the demon Pompolic. The game will let players control one of two characters (each with unique weapons and abilities) and take "full advantage" of the Wii Remote for combat and spellcasting.

Call for Heroes: Pompolic Wars is scheduled for release on the Wii sometime in the fourth quarter of 2007, with a June launch expected for the PC edition.

Sounds like it has the potential to be pretty good, or incredibly bad in which people buy all the copies and burn them for a crude sacrifice to their dark WoW gods.

A game that appears on the PC and the Wii...there's a stretch for ya. The danger is that the Wii won't be powerful enough to handle the game, or the PC will get a watered-down port.

It will be interesting to see whether they can successfully bridge two tiers of gaming hardware.

This game looks like it will be great. As long as they keep the online MP functionality good.

They need to take the time they need to make this game online. I can easily see this game being a Wii best seller with online compatibility. A fantasy MMORPG for the Wii would be perfect.

...did anyone actually watch the trailers? This game looks absolutely horrible. No graphics, no animation...all it's got going for it is that it's an RPG of some sort. And even that much looks iffy right now.

I have nothing against the Wii. In fact, I love it, since it's the only gaming console I bothered to get. But...games like this will not help it much. I'd rather Blizzard went and ported Diablo II or Starcraft or Warcraft III over instead of this.

I hope it actually makes using the Wiimote fun....too many games come out specifically to undermine Miamoto's work and make the Wii a gimmick for motion sensitivity.

Damn, hope this game works. The reason the Wii isnt a gaming console as much as the others (I have a Wii and 360, love 'em both. 360 all the time, Wii at parties) is because everyone thinks of "how can we make it motion sensitive" instead of "how can we make this a fun video game"

The above statement translates to "we will implement horrible and unplayable controls on the Wiimote."

I just hope the Wii-mote gets special attention..

This could easily go either way. Crappy if a generic port from PC; great if the team puts quality time into the controls. Additional content couldn't hurt either..

@ HyperMetaDragon Have you glanced at a sales chart since the system launched? And what , by your definition, classifies as a "true game"? What a clueless uninformed post LOL.

Is "true games" a new catch phrase to descibe the same FPS, or racer, or "horror" title that lands on every console? If so, then yeah, the Wii won't be getting any of those. Damn, RE is coming to the Wii isn't it....... Sorry man, I don't take gaming advice from anyone whose first console came with a CD drive, unless it was the Sega CDX.

    Hyper, you are clueless.

    1. WarioWare is hardly unknown. Its been a series on four platforms, starting with the gba (or is the gba unknown to you as well?)

    2. WarioWare for the Wii got a 9.1 from Gamespot. That qualifies it as "Superb" not crappy.

    3. WarioWare is made by Nintendo, which in case you didnt know, is not third-party.

    4. According to you, the Legend of Zelda isnt a "true" game.

    @ HyperMetaDragon

    ----------

At this point in their life, none of the big 3 consoles had many "must haves". I see many people defend the PS3 by saying the best is yet to come; wait until the big names hit, then sales will spike.

It seems pretty unreasonable to dismiss the Wii without giving it the same chance. Like the PS3, its biggest and best is still quite a while off. And like the PS3, the potential of the system's capabilities hasn't been taken advantage of yet. They're still exploring how to use it.

  • superkoolstud

    To HyperMetaDragon:
Warioware is highly popular and so is Bust-a-move. Besides its not like PS2 didn't get its share of crappy PS2 3rd party games.

  • HyperMetaDragon

    Posted May 3, 2007 7:50 pm PT

This is EXACTLY why Wii won't be doing well. It's getting a lot of third-party support now, but all of that is just baby games, if not, just plain bad games. All of these unknown, crappy games (Elebits? Bust-a-move? WarioWare?) won't mean anything to the Wii because in the end, it doesn't have any true games like the PS3 and 360 have.

    XBSHX

why do people waste their time posting "first"? its pretty damn retarded.

    --------------

Haven't you learned anything from these comment boards?

Posting first, even when you have nothing relevant to say (or at least some generic "woo, sounds good" comment to fool people in to thinking you're actually commenting on the article) makes you important for some reason. Special, even.

Because you're first. First is special.

    Now then:

A good, solid RPG is something the Wii definitely needs; especially in the first year after its release. The library needs a balance - even a partial one - of genres.

And in theory, the remote could be put to pretty good use. It just seems to scream 'potential' for magic casting, and possibly holding the remote in a certain way, specific to the weapon you're using. Spears, for example, take a thrusting motion towards the screen, while swords take slashes, clubs take a hammering motion, and so on.

All in theory, of course. I'd love to see a great RPG take full advantage of the Wii's capabilities, it has a ton of potential. They just need to NOT half-ass it, and fine tune the hell out of it.

  • DoctorFu

    Posted May 3, 2007 7:13 pm PT

The Wii desperately needs a solid RPG. Without one the system is only half as good as it's full potential.

  • Sargus

  • Valen_Ca

Sounds like it has potential, my only issue is the expected Q4 release this year, this pretty much puts it square in Galaxy's and I believe Prime 3's launch window so even if it is good it may get buried.

I was interested in the PC version of this game but I may have to wait for this Wii game now. It's encouraging to see more third parties bringing support back to Ninty.
