Fallout 3 trailer coming June 5

As footage of Black Isle's Van Buren project surfaces, Bethesda Softworks announces it will unveil the long-awaited RPG in just over a month.

Just over four years ago, Interplay shuttered Black Isle Studios. The internal developer was set up to be the struggling publisher's in-house role-playing game studio and was responsible for some of the most acclaimed RPGs of the late 1990s.

Foremost among Black Isle's projects was 1998's Fallout 2, the sequel to the fondly remembered Fallout, a role-playing game set in a post-nuclear wasteland. The studio was hard at work on Fallout 3--code-named "Van Buren"--which presumably died along with the studio. However, the project was resurrected by Bethesda Softworks, who licensed rights to Fallout 3 in 2004 before buying the property outright this year.

The prospect of an Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion-style RPG in a Road Warrior-like world has sparked more than a little interest in Fallout 3. However, so far the only evidence of the game's existence has been two one-sheet teaser posters at the 2005 and 2006 Electronic Entertainment Expos. No platforms have been announced, although Bethesda--which released Oblivion on the PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3--has said it is working on "multiple" versions of the game.

Today, though, Bethesda revealed that it will give the world its first look at Fallout 3 on June 5. That's when the countdown touted on the recently launched official Web site for the game will end and a teaser trailer for the game will go live. (The trailer will also be available on GameSpot.) The once-bare site also now sports the Fallout 3 theme, which sounds much more serious than its ironic predecessors and concept art (pictured). A rep for Bethesda says the latter will be updated weekly as the trailer's debut approaches.

Many are looking forward to Fallout 3 being "Oblivion with Mutants," although that has not been confirmed by Bethesda, who has only said the game will run on the same GameBryo engine as Elder Scrolls IV. However, those who had hoped for an isometric, turn-based RPG like the first two Fallouts got a look at what might have been this week, courtesy of some leaked Van Buren footage.

The footage, which is available on YouTube courtesy of a trailer from fan site No Mutants Allowed, shows Interplay's Fallout 3 would have basically been an expanded version of Fallout 2. Although it sports slicker graphics and more fluid animations than its predecessors, the game's "Pip Boy" heads-up display is virtually identical, as is the equipment screen.

    Yeah, well... personally I'm more anxious to experiment "Resident Evil: Extinction" & "Silent Hill 2" than this... but, granted, is kind of interesting. Although I've said it once, and I'll say it again: FALLOUT IS DEAD TO ME. It died with my - our? - beloved Black Isle Studios 4 years ago... anything that comes now, regardless of how anyone decides to call it, will ONLY be simply a washed out knock off of THE BEST game series of ALL time... nothing more. T_T
    Of course that means nothing to Bethesda... all the newbies will buy their "Oblivion with mutants", anyway. So, congratulations... I HOPE MICROSOFT BUYS YOU, and turns TES into a Halo clone.

    Yep, it is sad but true. My wife and I have this whole theory about how that came about. When we were growing up, people who loved video games were picked on and were the outcasts. Now, it is popular. Games used to appeal to an intellectual crowd, but ever since they have become more mainstream, the games themselves have been dumbed down.

    Flashy effects and visual gimmicks appeal to our baser instincts, not our intellects, but that is what the modern audience is looking for: thrills. I love action games as much as the next guy, but being good at them has the same appeal as being good at football. Its all about reaction and reflexes, no brain power. I feel no sense of accomplishment when I beat an action game (except when I beat Ninja Gaiden Black on very hard. That was just insane and took forever).
    That elite old gaming crowd is now a minority; so companies, being what they are, appeal to the more base majority by creating these "thrill" games to make their dollar.

    Few people want to think when they play a game anymore. They want big explosions, intense battles, and psychotic moves, not hard puzzles and epic stories. And when there is a story, they want to be walked through it like they were watching a movie rather than creating a legacy of their own.

    Oh to have modern technology twelve to fourteen years ago. That would have been great

    Ok, now I'm glad of the "question mark" when I mentioned you, nightvamp5...
    I understand now what you're saying... and I think we are 99% on the same page... nevertheless I still can't help feel a HUGE "Soul Ache" (or whatever you want to call it) about all this bulls**t.
    I mean, I'm a Prehistoric videogame's player myself (although I'm, in general, more of a Console Freak) and still can't believe how the Industry has shifted so quickly... and sometimes so HORRIBLY WRONG. Today the aesthetic aspect of the games seems to be the most important., over the REALLY esential, as the content of it... but, now that I think about it, the World seems to be flowing in that direction anyway, huh?

    Trust me when I say I understand. I too, as mentioned in one of my previous posts, still play and love the old fallout games. I've been playing pc games since they were just green Xs and Os on my monitor, and the fallout games are amongst the best, if not the best. I would love to see fallout come back with ever ounce of its blissful genius, but it won't. Maybe I'm being a cynic; maybe a part of me just died when black isles was disbanded (they made the best games ever). For Fallout 3, all I am hoping for is for them to be true to the world. I've said the 1st person aspect is forgivable because, to me, that wasn't the key part of Fallout: The world was. I love turn based games, strategy games... and nothing would please me more to see Fallout 3 like that. However, if it is going to change, I want that to change, not the world.

    I am hoping the spirit of my favorite franchise will not be stomped into the dirt because that is what really matters. The old style is phenomenal, but not popular outside our fan base. Bethesda is trying to appeal to both the fallout crowd and their already established company fan base. No matter how sad that is; that is the way it is going to be because they want to make their dollar. If a compromise has to be done, it should be the combat system. Let them change the visual perspective we view the world as long as it is the Fallout world we are viewing. The core of fallout is the wasted away people, the degenerating towns, the mature nature, the sick humor, the open ended story and gamesplay, not turns in combat.

    Oh, My God... Long has passed since we - as in "me and some other people I really don't know" =P - discussed all of this INFAMOUS MANIPULATION of THE BEST VIDEO GAME OF ALL TIME in the Forums... and still the discussion seems the same.

    Some people - the graphics-junkies - still could not care less if the game is "Oblivion with Mutants" - I'm not going to make any kind of comment about the ABSOLUTELY AND DISRESPECTFUL IGNORANCE of Mr. Thorsen... oops! Sorry... -, as long as it boasts the Super-Mega-Hyper-NextGen-Quality-Graphics of the latest Bethesda's GameBryo Engine (in this case, I think abortion SHOULD BE a choice... ).
    The others - as me, dangeranger_957, and a lot more - would keep fighting until the end, to make some people - maybe nightvamp5..? - understand WHAT FO meant for a LARGE portion of this-soon-to-be-apocalyptic-patch-of-land we all call home... and why we all gonna shed a tear the minute Bethesda shows the World the PAINFUL - for us - fruit of their "work"....
    In the middle, of course, are a huge amount of guys that NEVER had the SUBLIME HAPPINESS of playing the original FO's... the same ones that will buy the Crappy Graphics Factory Bethesda will sell, with a smile in their faces, justifying all the "changes" added... Aaahh... in times like this, Ignorance is DEFINITELY a bliss.... =(

    You know what? WHATEVER... I'm STILL playing FALLOUT - YES! The first one, who doesn't even have a damn car in it... but at least doesn't have the ANNOYING Myron, either ^_^ -... and I'm STILL enjoying it as much as the first time - or even more... is that possible? -. Next, will be FO2 - Tactics sucked, so is out -. Between the two of them I estimate a good year/year and a half would pass, in order to be able to try all the ideas I have... although I've already finish - a LONG time ago - 6 times FO and 4 times FO2, some Perks/Stats/Options/Ways combinations still roam my head... so I think I'm still in good shape to slooooooooowlyyy keep playing the REAL Fallout, and not some cheap Smoke-and-Mirrors' Sad Imitation from a company that should've kept releasing Oblivion's Expansions instead....

    My Lord... I STILL WET MY EYES WHEN I HEAR "War, War never changes..."

    P.S: dangeranger_957, although a change in locale would be BAD - to say the least -... I always dreamed about a map of ALL the American territory - or even all the continent, who knows? ;P -, not only some States... so that would've been nice. =)

    the accounted author hasnt informed himself very well. truth is fallout one and two also had a very dark tone in the opening themes. In fact, the ambient shown on the official site of F3 simply resembles that of F1 and 2 and thats good, its ver very promising, with the huge aircrafcarrier and all!

    If they turn Fallout into an FPS i will be super pissed. Its Rather clear that if they intend to use the same engine you may as well buy the upcoming shadowrun game. Also, I think a change in locale would be lame. I played to first two and came to love the locations from the oldies. I just think its foolish to think that bringing back a game series means abandoning its roots. please bethesda, make sure you learn from the mistakes of other developers. Yeah the new graphics aside, i think abandoning old gameplay styles will dissapoint the fans of the classic game. At least I hope we aren't so pocorn movie programmed to only care about shiny new graphics.

    This has been my favourite game franchise of all time. If they turn F3 into Oblivion with guns, I will quit my job, divorce my wife, blow my dog up and strangle my cat to death, then play the game full time over and over again.

    WTF!!! the teaser is coming out on my birthday.....damn I can't ask for anything more now.But i do hope they stick with th 3rd person turned based,cause IMO it just wouldn't be Fallout without it.Oh and the groin hits......but i don't know about being a porn star again......i got VD last time.

    i agree with you nightvamp5 that they do need to keep it at the mature level it is and they shouldnt change the stuff you can do in the game but they should add more stuff you can do in the game, and the people and there body's should be more realistic wear you hit them like you should be able to shoot some ones arm or leg off and they still should be alive

    36_deg, many of us are just wishing for something like what we knew and loved. I don't think anyone will be heartbroken by the change. As I mentioned before, the change to 1st person is ok. A more modern game needs a more modern look. What many are concerned about is that special touch that made fallout so great may be lost. Oblivion was the game of the year, and it was fantastic. However, Bethesda can't just crank out another Elder scrolls in a different world, not with this franchise. It has a loyal band of followers who fanaticism exceeds even psychotic eagles fans. They need to make sure to make the game a mature role playing game. It should not be dumbed down on any level for a younger audience. Fallout's staple was, "this is a messed up world, and you can be as messed up as you want in it." Little things like being able to aim for the groin, sell your wife into prostitution, having actual dialogue to kill a little boy because he was pissing you off. Yet, with all this socially unacceptable behavior, you could still be a savior if you want. This wasn't just chose to be good or choose to be evil. You could choose to be a complete sociopath or a saint. Those extremes were fantastic. There really were no limits. In Oblivion you couldn't even kill some people (no matter how bad you wanted to) because they were involved in some random quest. The most evil thing I did was join the dark brotherhood. Oh boy. That made me feel so evil *sarcasm btw*. That is what people are worried about fallout turning into.

    everyone who says this game will suck is just loser who needs to get a life because oblivion was the game of the year same with morrwind and if they make this game better then oblivion it will be god, oblivion with guns, mutants, more leveling up, and in a post-apocalyptic world will be sweet, and the people who are mad that it might be a first person rpg instead of third person rpg, i dont see how this will matter cause they will probably make it so u can switch the views

    I sincerely hope they use another 1950's song in the opening. Nothing set the mood for those games (and for Perlman's famous "War never changes" speech) better than something like Louis Armstrong's "A Kiss To Build A Dream On."

    However much I'd love for them to stick with the turn based strategic combat, that doesn't sell as well nowadays. Thus, it will not happen. They need to keep that sick sense of humor, blatant and demented sarcasm, and NC17 psycho adult theme. One of my most treasured memories in Fallout 2 was selling all my allies into slavery b/c I needed more ammo. If I can't do that, verbally abuse almost every person I encounter, cause a nuclear meltdown because I feel like it, splatter anyone's brains and entrails all over the sandy wasteland while still keeping the plot open, it will NOT be fallout. Yeah, I've played a good guy plenty, but it is the availability of those darker things that made fallout the best RPG ever. I still play both games to this day. I've got my ranger and my slaver. My porn star and my loyal hubby (and a hubby that pimps out his wife too. Man that was great). I love Oblivion. I've played it more than any other game I have on the 360, but it is nothing like fallout, nor should it ever be. Fallout is in a whole other league. If this is "Oblivion with Mutants," I will boycott Bethesda products for the rest of my life. I will raise my children to hate Bethesda products. Yes, making fallout 1st person is forgivable considering the market, but do not change the world we love.

    What made the old fallout great

    1. The excessive violence and dark humor
    2. Drugs, sex and characters that your mom told you to stay away from all your life.

    In other words, if its going to a sissy game that will be accessible to anyone of any age, it will suck. The adult themes were qualities that made Fallout stand out from other RPGs out there.

    OK Bethesda before releaseing this game should look at the last two games in the fallout series (both named the brouterhood of steel for some odd reason) these games SUCKED for two seperate reasons fallout the brotherhood of steel for the x-box and PS 2 sucked because i was NOT FALLOUT hell it bearly qualified as a RPG the fallout series is a great formula why reinvent the weel? if it ain't broken DON'T FIX IT!! oblivion is a good game ... fallout is a good game that doesnt mean that when i load up fallout i wont mind playing oblivion with fallout themed skins fallout tactics Brotherhood of steel (see what i mean about the same name wierd eh) sucked but not for not followinf the fallout formula (witch it actually did do) but becuase it was rushed no side quest full of bugs and the missions got damn close to punitive in the last missions of the game as well as obviouse ideas that do time it did nothing with. honestly i belive that that has more to do with interplays desperate need to get games on the shelves and money in the bank (an issue that i very much dout that Bethesda will be suffering from anythime soon) that being said i Bethesda really may not reailze what they have gotten themshelves into. fallout is more tehn just i classic its a PILLER of the PC RPG world and i for one will never buy anouter Bethesda product if they screw this one up

    Oblivion with mutants? God save us. Bethesda needs to get this straight, immediate: Isometric; team based combat are the core of Fallout's gameplay, just like 50's nuclear americana and dark, often M rated humor are essential to the game's character. Losing even one of these elements is going to leave the project into a fiasco, neutered and unloved by anyone.

    2. If they go for the 1st person view it wont be fallout any more (no matter how falloutish they make it)
    3. Black Isle is the best thing that happened to gaming - they made games with sh1tty graphics that are so much more addictive and superior to any of todays engine tuned, eyecandy games - AND NOBODY CAN MAKE THE 3rd FALLOUT THE WAY THEY WOULD...
    4. Bethesda will give their best but "oblivion with guns" concept will definitely suck.

    ^Who are these people? I haven't met a single person who played either of the originals that want it anything like Oblivion. We want our isometric views, our mature content, and turnbased (ie, intelligent/tactical) combat. GS is kissing butt for adspace by lying. Nice one. Thumbs down.

    Ugh, this is just depressing. You know Bethesda isn't even going to release a demo so the only thing people will have to go on before buying the game is marketing hype. And there wasn't much Bethesda did right with Oblivion besides that.

    I really wondered why they felt the need to buy the Fallout licence when they could easily have made up their own Oblivion with mutants, but reading this thread it seems obvious, with all the people saying they are looking forward to FO3 because they heard FO 1 and 2 were good, but never played them.

    And of course Gamespot is kissing their asses for ads as usual.

    I really hope Bethesda does a good job with this, I'm hoping for much more than "Oblivion with mutants" as most people seem to think. The Fallout games had great characters and plot, and I think that's something that the Elder Scrolls games are somewhat lacking in. Hopefully this is changed.

    Even if it isn't Jeremy Seoule, they have a horrible tendacy nowadays to think that if it has an orchestra the guy/girl must be a freakin' genius at composing music.

    Sadly, the first step has already been fudged. The concept art is ok, but the music is tottaly far from the concept and souless as you can possibly get, expect less atmosphere on this one.

    I really hope they don't mess with it too much, just give the fans of the original what they want. Not dumbed down, not first person and definitely not a shooter, that market is very well catered for. It would be good to revisit this game, with up to date visuals, although I feel the original still stands up well in it's own right.

    The way they say it, this is supposed to be taken well by people. It would have sufficed to check the first page of the PC games forum any day during the last one or two weeks to see how badly the community is taking this type of news. Practically everyone who's played Fallout believes this approach to making a sequel will spawn a total letdown. Nevertheless, GameSpot people appear to be so biased in their views on Oblivion, that no community outcry will make them even consider the fact that "Oblivion-izing" every game out there might just not be the way to go.

    I wasn't into gaming when the original Fallout was released, or even the second one for that matter.. But I have read much about them, and I would love to play them.. They look awesome, so I am really looking forward to getting to play this.. and Bethesda will make it sweet..

    As someone mentioned earlier, Torque, if you couldn't defeat some wild dogs with a submachine gun, you really screwed up building an effective combat oriented character at that time or you weren't at an expected level. In reality someone who's terrible at firearms would get eaten alive by a bunch of mean dogs without some kind of metal full body armour. So it's actually proof that the combat system of the old Fallout series was quite realistic in a lot of aspects. Let's face it, the new Fallout won't be of the same style as that of its predecessors, that's a given, no use to argue over it. If only Troika or Obsidian got their hands on the project..

    You know, I have to be honest. I really loved Fallout and Fallout 2, and I couldn't be happier that Bethesda will be giving us the gift of Fallout 3.

    I loved the first two so much that I honestly did not play a single video game for... I don't know... six to eight months after finishing Fallout 2. The game I picked up 6 to 8 months later was NHL 97. I played a whole seaon (with playoffs) as the Blackhawks. During a college finals week. It was worth every minute.

    Anyway, the point is, I'm happy that Bethesda will author Fallout 3 because Bethesda is making some of the best games on the market these days. They have been consistently good for a long time. Honestly, I think if you're unhappy Bethesda is making this game, you need to ask yourself who on Earth you would want to make Fallout 3.

    I can't think of anybody. The guys at Bethesda sound like they are really big fans of the games, and they sound like they really want to capture the magic moments that made the series' first two entries truly fantastic.

    I love the theme song. It almost has the feel of a detective theme. It sounds like the game is based out on the east coast, and I think it would be awesome to have more of a gothic feel to Fallout 3. Post apocolyptic, gothic 50's New York would be the coolest thing ever.

    Plus, doesn't that building look like either a gas station or an all-night interstate diner? I can't help think of how awesome it will be to rebuild one of the only working cars humanity has seen in dozens of years. IT's the little things that make Fallout mind-blowingly great, and I think Bethesda realizes that, and has given us a taste of their attention to detail with the choices they made for the first concept art and theme music to be released.

    Actually what I found to be the highlight of the Fallout games was the unique setting and the tongue in cheek way it handled the post holocaust genre. I love Fallout 1 & 2 but I think they should have some changes made to the gameplay mechanics to bring Fallout into the next generation.

    First, I like the idea of making Fallout 3 a first person action RPG. I find that making full use of new technology can make a game with better immersion than the old fashioned isometric view.

    Also, the damage system should be revamped. I support a damage system similar to what Bethesda had in Call of Cthuluh: Dark Corners of the Earth. A locational damage system where injuries to different parts of the body will affect the character differently. A head wound will make the character sway and reduce the accuracy of attacks, a leg wound will make the character limp and reduce movement speed etc. Also, healing should be a b**ch like in the original games. Unlike a fantasy game where you can just pop a healing spell and your fine. Stimpacks will keep you going for a short time but they soon wear off and the wound effects return. Instead natural healing or a medical kit should be needed to heal them permanently. Of course, without medical treatment, the character will bleed to death. I think this would serve to enhance the dark, gritty and dangerous feel that Fallout's combat had.

    So, in summation. I would like to see Bethesda bring Fallout into the next generation. Revamp the system and make it a more immersive experience, while keeping that which makes Fallout unique. The quirky characters, the 1950'sesque "World of Tomorrow" visual styling, the gritty and dangerous combat. I think that Fallout 3 will be a great game. Once again I am cautious but optimistic.

    Fallout 3 will be the game STALKER Shadow of Chernobyl should have been.
