PSP camera dated for Europe

Sony announces handheld camera peripheral for PAL territories, to be released later this month.

Last week Sony announced that its next-gen console, the PlayStation 3, would be getting its own version of the PlayStation 2's EyeToy, simply called Eye. Today Sony made another camera confirmation, announcing that the PlayStation Portable peripheral Go! Cam will be released on May 16 across Europe and other PAL territories.

The camera, which can be twisted 180 degrees, will also have a microphone and up to two and a half hours worth of video recording time. When used with a 4GB memory stick, it can hold more than 40,000 photos. Go! Cam will also come bundled with the photo, video, and audio-editing software Go! Edit.

SCEE's PSP marketing manager, Stephane Hareau, commented, "With summer around the corner and the ability to turn your PSP into a mini camcorder and capture all the best moments in your life, this is yet another reason to get a PSP."

The Go! Cam will be released in PAL territories on May 16, at a price of £34.99 in the UK and 49.99 euros in Europe. The US price and release date is not yet known. Go! Cam was released in Japan last year under the name "Chotto Shot."

When is this going to be out world wide this stuff already hit stores months before this announcement. They even have other things released like the GPS Reciever that is used in games. The Media Manager looks pretty cool when you see this peripheral (Go!Cam)

Ohhhh, this cam is sweet eye candy. It's much smaller than it looks in the pic, and the video is very nice quality.

Video blogging straight from the PSP...what better way to capture the first-person impression of the game you just played. I wonder if any games will incorporate / use the functionality of this device.

I hope it takes pictures and recordings in widescreen.

I love my PSP, but come on!!! First off, you can estimate it will probably be $50 bucks here in the US. Secondly, Sony spends all their time on these hair brain ideas about add-ons rather than games. GPS anyone?!?

Of first off its "megapixel" not magapixsels... and its "camera" not "camra", its "resizing", not "resiseing"... and funnily enough - its "want".. not "wan't".... But thanks for pointing out MY error

second, looking for something cheaper than a digital camera ??
    http://direct.tesco.com/q/R.100-2670.aspx

There, a 3.2 MEGAPIXEL camera for £19.94. Nearly half the price of a PSP camera (comes with a flash too). So for £35 you can get an even better camera for that price, which records videos, with sound.

And who want's a widescreen picture in 1.3 megapixels? Its just going to make the imperfections even more obvious.

The idea of having a cellphone camera is so that you can do other things, its primarily a phone, but it can take pics and videos which you can send to friends, plus, you can use its primary functions afterwards.
With a psp, if you watch a video, you barely have enough battery left for recording some videos.

And third, its "whining" not "whineing". What do I want for about £35? If I wanted a proper camera which actually can "record the best moments of my life" then I would want something more than 1.3 megapixels, and also something which I can use in the daylight...

Seriously, my point is arguing against this - "turn your PSP into a mini camcorder and capture all the best moments in your life, this is yet another reason to get a PSP."

. Its a nice NOVELTY to have a camera on a psp, but that statement is entirely false because you can get far superior image recording devices for much less than a psp camera, let alone the memory stick or psp itself.

Ok First off it's called a Catch 22 not 20 20. second 1.3 Magapixsels is just fine if your looking for somthing cheaper than a digital camra. Plus it will be in full widscreen meaning no more resiseing photos to fit your PSP. Stop whineing what do you wan't for about $50.00? A $50.00 dalar camra you can get now adays won't be in even 1.3. This is a cheaper and better idea than going out and buying a full on $250.00 cellphone, or buying a $600.00 digital camcorder. My Friend got a cellphone with camra in it and it's was $350.00 and still takes worse pictures than any camra I have ever seen. You can't even tell what it is you taking pictures of, on his $350.00 cellphone!

1.3??!?!??! 1.3 megapixels??! I could buy a vivitar camera with 1.3 megapixels for less than £15!!! 1.3, thats the quality of an average webcam now - heck, phones have better image quality than that.

I wouldn't like to see a 1.3 megapixel landscape picture fitting the length of the psp screen...

The thing should be at LEAST 3megapixels...
And what about a flash for photos? with 1.3 megapixels, in darker conditions all you are going to get is blocky "silent hill fuzz" look. great if you like silent hill, not so great if you want to show these videos on a ps3.

The annoying thing is this - battery life. Recording videos, it will probably zap up the battery life, giving you no room left to do anything else with the psp (heaven forbid a gps...).
And using the psp in daylight, I remember using my psp out in the summer, what a waste of time. I couldn't see a THING.

And recording audio with this thing... I don't suppose teh capture range is going to be very good. So generally those "best moments of your life" will have to be short enough for the battery to last, close enough for you to hear whats going on, and light enough so you can SEE whats going on.

Catch 22 situation - You can use the psp in the light to get better images with the 1.3megapixel camera, but you can't see the screen. OR, you can use it in the dark to see the screen better, but get crappy picks and videos...
An expensive thing if you ask me, go grab a vivitar camera with 6megapixels for the same price...

I think they could have done quite a bit better than 1.3 Megapixels. That is just your average camera phone. The editing package that comes with it though looks great. Its a brilliant idea, i plan on getting it when it comes out in less than 2 weeks. YEH!!!

If this ever comes to the US I will surely get it as my current camra is over 4 years old and realy needs to be replaced by somthing better. That and I got pictures on my PSP right now and I'm sick of them not being in widscreen meaning they look bad for backgrounds on my system.

1.3 Megapixels. Massively dated, completely pointless. I am a PSP fan but this is crazy. Sony make some lovely cameras and have the Carl Zeiss lens. This is a joke on their part. It might be cheap but that money might as well be put towards a new, better camera. Nonvergence not convergence in this case I think.

Hmm, nothing much to say about this other than it's just another addon. Some people may buy it just for the heck of it, but I don't know. If you have your own digital camera around you won't really need this gadget. If they come out with some "gaming" use for it, then maybe it would be a smart purchase.

    The size is good.

  • GrimBee

    Posted May 1, 2007 4:17 pm PT

IMO - they should of made the playstation eye this size, so it could like go ontop of the pad or something crappy like that - it would save you having to buy TWO cameras at least...One for your ps3, and then another for the psp.

And this made me laugh -
""With summer around the corner and the ability to turn your PSP into a mini camcorder and capture all the best moments in your life, this is yet another reason to get a PSP.""

LOL! Firstly, you can't see the ps3 screen in the sunlight, its too reflective, and not bright enough or good at certain awkward angles to see the right colours.

And aslong as your "best moments of your life" are under 2 hours and can be stored on a 4gb stick - you are well under way!
And "mini" ??? I believe there are plenty of sony-made camcorders, with much larger storage, with a flip away screen and viewing eye (important). What's so "mini" about a psp with a camera ontop of it? Its the equivalent of pavaroti (been run over til hes flat) with a top hat on...
In comparison to other image recording thingies out there...

The best thing sony can do is just drop this stuff, and just make good phones with a top-notch camera on it. Small design, great battery...

By the time you get the camera, the 4gb stick and an extra battery - you might aswell buy a dvd camcorder or a hdd camcorder...

  • Trogeton

    Posted May 1, 2007 4:11 pm PT

WOW... this thing is just as good as a digital camera... even though I have a digi cam, Im still getting this, this is the best cam toy ever out of the ps2 xbox and computer.. whoa a definite buy OH YEAH
