BAFTA Games Awards to expand

British Academy event expecting 2,000 guests for this year's ceremony.

The 2007 British Academy Video Games Awards will be held on October 23 at a new venue to accommodate around three times the number of guests who attended last year. The new venue--Battersea Evolution, in Battersea Park, London--can seat more than 2,000. Last year almost 700 people were at the ceremony at the Round House in Camden.

BAFTA, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, hosts annual awards for the film, television, and video game industries. Last year, the two main parts of the London Games Festival--GDC London and the London Games Summit--also took place at the BAFTA headquarters in central London.

This year's show will be bigger and better than the last, according to BAFTA head of awards Anne-Marie Flynn, "Last year we mounted the most highly attended awards in the industry and this year will be even bigger. We are very excited about putting on a really visually arresting awards show in 2007."

Academy chairman Hilary Bevan Jones added, "The art form of the video game has truly come of age and the Academy could not be prouder to recognise its creative and technical practitioners."

    @never-named

    If Zsc4 thinks that games are not Art then that is his opinion. Just because it is not your opinion it doesn't mean that it is wrong. Take a good hard look at yourself before you start throwing abuse around.

    I wouldn't call games an art form. There is the odd exception like Okami but this really is the exception in a sea of FIFA and Need for Speed sequels.

    Either for good or for bad, everyone in any kind of entertainment show (awards, expositions, etc) is expanding. Who is shrinking? E3 is.

    This is a pretty late time to do game awards. But still always fun to see.

    Highlights of last year's BAVGAs turned up on E4 in an absolutely abysmal show tucked away in the dead of night. Would it be too much to ask for a more mature programme this year?

    Some of the smaller tv stations you can find on Sky (deep in the entertainment pages) might televise it.

    Maybe, if GameSpot will film the event(s), then we could see them on the site...
