Call of Duty 4 waging Modern Warfare

After a year-plus of rumors, Activision confirms the next installment in its first-person shooter series will leave WWII behind; game to be officially unveiled this Saturday during NFL Draft.

For months, rumors have raged that the Call of Duty series would follow in the footsteps of Battlefield, its biggest rival in the military shooter genre, into the modern era of warfare. Today, the franchise's publisher, Activision, made it official. Developed by COD creators Infinity Ward, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare will eschew the franchise's traditional World War II setting in favor of a fictional conflict set during contemporary times.

Unfortunately, the setting is about all that's known about COD4. No details--including platforms--were revealed to the press. Instead of issuing the typical press release, Activision has decided to unveil the game via a trailer that will be shown during the NFL Draft on ESPN at (10 a.m. PDT /1 p.m. EDT) this Saturday April 28.

Although Activision is holding back on the details of COD4, its announcement was not unexpected. This month, gamers were tipped off to the unveiling of something on developer Infinity Ward's Web site. The tease came just over a year after the first rumors about a modern-day Call of Duty first surfaced in the gaming press.

I don't have xbox live, so only buy games for single player.
Does anyone think it's worth getting just for campaign?

A DEFINATE SUCCESS THIS GAME! I specially have liked the idea about "modern warfare." Yet, I can't wait to play the real game and see what is the setting, where it is, how is it played, it is just so exciting!!!

Why didn't they just change the title? A huge 3 part WW2 franchise and they just suddenly decide to make their forth set in the future! I mean, what the hell are they thinking? It makes no sense at all. Now lets just wait a few months or so before they make one set in the future where everything has turned icey!... hmmmm sounds familiar

Well I just saw the trailer for this and I think it looks a lot like a Tom Clancy game...not that there is anything wrong with that.

I concur that someone needs to make a good vietnam game that does it some justice. Vietnam was a totally different war than WWII and modern era kinda of warfare. As far as I have seen everything has completely failed to simulate the combat and setting of vietnam.

I just wonder wether the franchise is going to change much, like, will they make it a squad vased game now or stick to shooting thousands of enemies... i hope they keep it as is.

"Sometimes I wonder why World War I isn't given more attention in video games, but maybe the weapons and vehicles aren't as interesting as their WWII counterparts."( theKSMM )

Ha! If they made a WW1 game it would be a repetitive game of charge and retreat.

    well, I agree with xcollector.

It has been done to death. But Modern War games are also becoming to common. And futuristic ones as well.

So what are they supposed to do?

  • xcollector

    Posted May 5, 2007 7:10 pm GMT

WW2 has been done to death. Its only reasonable to move away from it. But I have no interest in modern combat. They should have done something like Call of Duty Vietnam. This will probably be another Ghost Recon.

it looks like the nations will be America(of course), Britain(of course), and a middle eastern country i dont know which one though. I dont dee why we would be fighting with Isreal since we are allies with them, but most other middle east countries are still up in the air.

Well, I like the change. I don't really mind if the single player sucks or not, the multiplayer has to pwn. But as my fellow clan member/IW employee said, 'IW will not let you down'. (but they did let us down on the CoD3 part... :/ But if it does suck, MoHA will be there for back up. Along with Halo2, bioshock, etc, etc. Its going to be a great summer..

I love the CoD franchise, and personally I was hoping they would take the next game into the Vietnam War.

HOORAY INFINITY WARD!!! Infinity Ward rocks my socks!

  • Zackaab

    Posted May 2, 2007 11:33 am GMT

I agree that the modern-day shooter is a little crowded, but so was WWII.
This will really determine the fate of CoD. If it fails, Activision won't be able to make another. If it's mediocre, they may make more, but I think it'll die out. If it rocks, well, they keep coming (hope and pray).

Korea might be good, but Vietnam is still too recent and still too controversial (especially with a title like Call of Duty) for a successful game...It goes beyond the game itself and into politics.
...I want my CoD pure and real...

  • Hawk456

    Posted May 2, 2007 11:24 am GMT

It's a solid franchise so it'll fare well. You can only make so many WWII games until you need a change of scenery. Vietnam or Korean might be a good environment for a FPS (jungle warfare a la Far Cry). Not sure about modern-day urban combat though, that genre is getting a lttle crowded.

  • Vihlo

    Posted May 2, 2007 10:19 am GMT

Finally, something new, the whole WWII era was just gettin old... you can only storm the beaches of Normandy so many times.

The thing I want to see in a game is two industrialized, superpower nations/alliances go to war. Not like "America vs teh terrorists" over and over again, where one side has all technology and squad-based combat and the other has inferor equipment but "attack from all directions".

I'd love to see fully-equipped modern soldiers go at it against eachother. That, and the whole desert town/mideast thing is getting worse then WWII in how much its being redone...

  • Nobana

    Posted May 1, 2007 9:24 pm GMT

Any word on the nations? It seems that there is America and Britain of course, my guess on a third would be either Gemany or Israel.

Wow! AT least there not doing like all the other franchise games and sticking with one era! From what I saw from the first trailer it looks like this game is going to be pretty amazing! I just hope they stick with there usual style of squad based missions during the whole game. Thats what I like about Call Of Duty games.

  • Isakovic

Anything but UBI "Fisher Price" war games, it's time for good FPS to come out... really looking forward to it. Also, Operation Flashpoint 2 is going to be sweet, Frontlines: Fuels Of War, Rogue Warrior... etc. For those who want WW2 games, there is Fall of Liberty, MOHA: Airborne, Hour of Victory... etc.

wow this is going to be interesting. i just wanna know how its gonna play bc call of duty has always been in WWII settings. ah well, i personally think we got enough modern warfare franchises out anyways. ill prolly be buying about 6 this year alone. thats not even including the other games like bioshock halo 3 and mass effect. and madden
