Euro PSP price drops

Following a cut earlier this month in the States, British PSPs also get a new price and Platinum titles.

Back at the beginning of April, after months of "ruling it out," Sony announced that the PlayStation Portable would be getting a price cut in the US, bringing the handheld's core price down $30 to $169.99. Sony remained tight-lipped as to when, or even if, those across the pond would be treated to similar savings.

Today it has been confirmed that the PSP will get a new recommended retail price in the UK of £129.99 (from £149.99), effective May 4. The portable will also get a price drop across the rest of Europe to 169 euros.

There will also be five new Platinum titles released at a new price of £14.99--Ridge Racer 2, Tekken: Dark Resurrection, Killzone: Liberation, LocoRoco, and MotoGP.

The company said that the reason behind the price cut was to celebrate the PlayStation 3's launch in Europe. Ray Maguire, Sony Computer Entertainment UK managing director, said in a statement, "now the exciting possibility of connecting remotely to the PS3 makes PSP more relevant than ever. So what better time to offer a brand-new price point?"

I guess dropping the price because of the PS3 launch in europe is a good excuse to finnally drop the price.
Even with this drop in price, its still alot more then the DS, which is selling really well, and has plenty of games from the GBA/GB to be played too.

I personally think that compared to the DS, the PSP is almost dead in the water, as its never really had any killer games to get peoples attention, while the DS is full of great 1st party games and the backwards compatability.
Will we perhaps see a PS3 price drop when we see a game come out for the console and handheld that can have data swapped between them for extra content on each?

The price drop is good news, but I think the interoperability between the PSP and the PS3 is easy to overstate. The Remote Play feature is most impressive for allowing you to stream music and video wirelessly off your PS3 system, but since it can only be done locally (i.e. in the house) it's value is limited.

Finally it's possible to play the same PSOne games on the PSP and the PS3 and share save files, but so far the games released have been rather paltry. Meanwhile, games flow onto the Wii VC at a steady rate.

What would really "wow" me is true cross-platform gaming on the PlayStation systems. Being able to take my PS3 game on the go with me and resume it when I get back would be good. Or even being able to play with/against PS3 players from my PSP would be good too. I doubt that either one of these will happen anytime soon, but I can dream.

Maybe this will help cut the DS to PSP ratio to something better, like less than about 3:2.

PSP is going strong and so is the PS3, theres no more "Its going to fail" stuff anymore, why? Because they wont. And by the end of its life cycle PS3 will definately have overshadowed its 360 competitor in that it has so much more to offer long term, yes it may be a bit harder to code for but the things it offers are so much better and with sony releasing EDGE updates (its dev kit) all the time its getting much easier.

Bronson2k3 "quote"Euro peeps must always pay more huh??"quote"

Of course we do, because they're jealous that Europe is going to be the biggest Economic Power in 2020.

But I agree with everyone we're getting ripped off by the government, here in The Netherlands it's called "BTW" in English it''s like "Added Tax Value"
and we have 19.5% over the whole amount, sounds alot ,yeah i know.

But the most sucking part is that i bougth a PSP system last week

Sony haters shut it the PSP is a great machine and an amazing machine if you have a PS3 because you can buy Playstation Playstation 2 games on the PS3 for like 20 bucks. The games aren’t just some crappy games they brought out real quickly either they were some of the best games on the Playstation. I had one and yes I did get rid of it but it as because I don’t travel and I own a PS3 and 360 so I never used it. The whole DS system is better thing bah yes when it comes to games it is because Nintendo has like six handheld systems under its belt.

17.5 percent VAT is like a rip off. Income tax and tax with other names are more than enough. Government rips us off and so does the retailers... Actually both do in equal amount I think...

  • Sidbob

    Posted Apr 24, 2007 11:37 am PT

The problem in the UK is that we pay 17.5% "value" added tax on all purchases which can make it appear that we are being ripped off.

We are being ripped off, but by the Government, not by retailers.

Even the Grand Theft Auto game recently released for the PSP really SUCKED!!! Even that show on G4 with Adam and Morgan rated the game only a 3 out of 5. I'd rather spend my time playing Crackdown on the Xbox 360, rather than some watered down Grand Theft Auto on the PSP. The PSP isn't as good as the Nintendo DS. The DS is all about gameplay, and doing things correctly, rather than trying to do 3D graphics and failing bigtime with the graphics and gameplay, like the PSP fails.

I'm sorry, but I had the PSP and I just couldn't stand the fact I'd turn it on and have to wait around 5minutes to load a game up and playing for about 4 hours before the batteries die on me. I gave mine away to my brother for free.

That's true that you can't really compare the PSP to the DS because the PSP isn't even a games machine, It's a multimedia player trying to be jack of all trades, but ends up a master of none.

Even with the price cut today, it's not worth the purchase in my opinion.

firebladedx "MP3 Player, Video Player, Photo Viewer, Web Browser, Portable PS1/X, PS3 interconnectability + price drop = must buy, otherwise insanity will soon follow.
I have no idea how people can even compare the PSP to the DS. I mean I had a DS n sold it to get a PSP. Best decision I ever made. I admit i did like the DS, but it did have a very childish feel to it. Whilst the PSP isnt just a game devices, its a anti-boredom phenomenon."

i agree 100% thats why i did the same thing as you, i dont get how people compare the PSP to the DS, it's like comparing the PS3 to the PS1.

Can't wait for the PSone emulator - FFVII, Vagrant Story and Metal Gear on the move?? Need I say more? Great news for customers and for Sony. While I don't think it will catch the DS, I get the feeling that Sony is quite happy with the business that the PSP is doing (it performed above expectations last Christmas). Now, if it only had a better range of exclusive titles...

  • Reneef154
