Darkness falls on Sony's Q2 lineup

Starbreeze's comic-inspired shooter leads pack of eight PS3 titles, along with MLB 07, Spider-Man 3, and Ninja Gaiden Sigma; PSP R6 Vegas, PS2 Manhunt 2 also due out by June 3.

After slowing to a trickle in recent weeks, the flow of PlayStation 3 games is poised to resume full force. Today, Sony Computer Entertainment America announced it plans to release more than 100 games--including many PS3 titles--in North America during the second quarter of 2007, which ends on June 30.

The PS3's Q2 slate contains several rereleases of games already available on other platforms. These include Vivendi Games' shooter F.E.A.R., already out for the Xbox 360 and PC, and Ninja Gaiden Sigma (June), a reworked version of the critically lauded Ninja Gaiden Black--which was itself a revamp of Ninja Gaiden for the Xbox. The Sony-developed baseball sim MLB 07: The Show (May 15), which was released on the PlayStation 2 and PlayStation Portable last month, is also on the docket.

SCEA's second-quarter PS3 schedule also includes several all-new games, including another baseball game, 2K Sports' The BIGS (June 25, also due out on the PS2 and PSP). Foremost among these is The Darkness (also June 25), a comic-book-inspired shooter from The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay developer Starbreeze Studios and 2K Games. Just after its film inspiration hits theaters, Spider-Man 3 (May 4) will swing onto the PS3, with another film-inspired game, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (May 22), arriving on the console during the quarter. (Both Spider-Man 3 and At World's End are coming to the PSP and PS2 as well.)

The PS3 will also get an octet of downloadable games via the PlayStation Store, which now has more than 600,000 users. One, Calling All Cars, is an all-new cops-and-robbers party game. The other seven are arcade classics rejiggered to support online multiplayer. These include Championship Sprint, Gauntlet II, Joust, Mortal Kombat II, Rampage World Tour, Super Puzzle Fighter II HD Remix, and Rampart. Mortal Kombat II has already been released, but the other games do not have specific release dates.

The April-June period will also see a passel of new PSP games ship in the US. These include Valhalla Knights and Test Drive Unlimited, which have already been released. There will be shrunken-down versions of console hits such as Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas, as well as old-school rereleases such as Ridge Racer 2, Final Fantasy, and Final Fantasy II.

Though it is in its life-cycle twilight, the PlayStation 2 still has a robust release schedule during Q2 2007. The platform will see no less than four film tie-ins during the three months, including Shrek the Third (May 8) and the Pixar-inspired Ratatouille (June 26). Rockstar Games' most violent series will return to the console in the form of Manhunt 2, and Eidos' most popular heroine, Lara Croft, will make her comeback in Tomb Raider: Anniversary (May 29).

since I have not played a previous version of F.E.A.R or Ninja Gaiden it will be amazing to me. I also have gauntlet II and mortal kombat II and the online addon is amazing. PS2's list looks ok, other then Manhunt there's nothing else I see that interests me there. PSP's list also looks good with 3 games that would make me want a PSP.

You guys can argue all you want... I'll be getting both a PS3 and a 360 very soon. As far as this list goes, I'm just glad to see that Manhunt 2 will be out in the second quarter. April is done, so bring on May!!! Hopefully it'll be out by then. Dawn of Mana will be greatness, as will Disaster Report II: Raw Danger (even though it's not on the list)

Someone please tell me why NCAA 2008 is listed for the PS2 and not the PS3? Is it coming out early for the PS2 or is it delayed on the PS3?

Tenhubbin if u have a PS3 and u haven't played Ninja Gaiden or Ninja gaiden Black on the Xbox u owe it to urself to try Sigma. That is if u only have a PS3 and u aren't chicken of course. It might be a rehash but that game will be awesome and super hard.

I'm surprised that the ratio of PS2-to-PS3 game releases is shifting so quickly. I was predicting that the lion's share of new releases would still be for the PS2 just because of its tremendous market share, but it seems that developers are moving to the new console pretty quickly this year.

That's good for Sony, because otherwise there's not a compelling argument to keep gamers from continuing to buy used PS2 equipment and games rather than investing in a new toy.

I will get The Darkness, I have both a PS3 and a 360 but will probably get it on 360 because I'm not waiting extra months. Fan-Boy talk is foolish, I appreciate good games regardless of platform !

dont go talking about how sells are in japan on the ps3--i recall reading few months ago that the 360 sells arent what microsoft would like for them to be--even alot of the japanese think the 360 is a joke--looks like the psp the ps2 and the ps3 has a good lineup of stuff coming out next couple months--hmm--whats coming out for the original xbox--nothing--since microsoft stopped support for it before the 360 was released---sony still supporting the ps2--as they keep " all " customers in mind--not just those who bought the next gen console--ps3..
    ..
.. and i do agree--the fanboys are getting old--i have a ps3 and a wii--maybe planning on getting another 360 for games like mass effect --not sure if i will shell out 300 for core--400 for premium or 500 for the elite--even though black is in....
    ..
.. so enjoy the gams you play guys--no matter what console-be glad you get to play the things--some countries dont get to..

Really hoping Dawn of Mana ends up being good. That's one franchise that hasn't seen a good installment in quite a while. If this one ends up being a dud, I think we can kiss it good bye.

If you 360 owners are so happy with your lineup, then why are you even here posting? If you think PS3 is a flop, why do you keep posting to make yourself feel good, go play your 360 then. I would think you had lots of games to play. You needed concern yourself with how well PS3 is doing, go play Gears, Lost Planet, Halo or whatever.

    OiMae you are dillusional...

By the time god of war 3 comes out this war will be over..the 360 and wii will be so far ahead that publishers will be concentrating on these platforms

The PS3 has sold 80% less in japan than the PS2 did in the same time in the US its sold 40% less... it is clear the the PS3 will not have the same marketshare as it did with the PS2

sounds like you are starting to get a little worried witht he way the PS3 support is going..

Can't gamespot block, ban or kill fanboy comments? Really, its getting old now, not only have you sold your soul to a money grabbing company, you have also shown your self to be not that bright. Grow up. As for this bit of news, its about time the PS3 got more games, i don't own a PS3, i have a 360, BUT, ill get a PS3 if the price cuts. But again, well done Sony, get more games out and lets see the PS3 power!

    "Halo3 is just one game!" - smoothn00dle

Halo 3 may be one game, regardless, it is STILL the widest played online multiplayer game for a console on the market today. More hours get logged on that game every day than most games get in a week. By stating that it's one game makes no difference. The original Xbox didn't have much of anything in respect to decent games, yet Halo kept it's head above water the whole ride. I can say that without that franchise we may have never seen a 360. I know that's going a bit far, but it WAS M$'s saving grace, they're flagship, and they WILL be putting as much money as needed into the development, advertising, and other sparkly things to get that game into as many houses as possible.

    "MGS4 can match Halo3 toe to toe" - smoothn00dle

Pitting these 2 games is like comparing apples to oranges, they're not even aimed at the same demographic.

"New IP exclusive games like Motorstorm and Resistance sold over a 1million copies"

These are the ONLY 2 games to own for a PS3 at the moment. It's like saying if (Insert name of board game here) was the ONLY board game on the market and 1 million people wanted to play a board game, then that game would sell 1 million copies. They didn't sell because they were good games, they sold because people had no choice, unless they wanted a broken PS3 after slamming it into the ground for buying Gundam. As a side note, i'm not saying those games weren't good, because I felt like I got my moneys worth out of them, but you see the point I'm making. "M$'s future doesn't look good" - smoothn00dle

    A completely IGNORANT statement.

    Posted Apr 20, 2007 2:23 am PT

It can't be a good sign if the PS2 is still outselling the PS3, even worse when its being outsold by the GBA.

I'd be worried that its being outsold by the 360, if it were so great then it ought to be catching up, not falling further behind, yet all you here is; "just wait till.... (insert MGS4, FF13, Lair, etc, etc, etc, here) comes out", it needs a price drop and some new decent titles now, not promises of stuff 9 months down the line.

  • smoothn00dle

    Posted Apr 20, 2007 2:17 am PT

Xbox fanboy have no idea! It is Xbox360 that have a problem. The first crack of M$ is cooking their console numbers. Halo3 is just one game! PS3 has 83 exclusive titles. MGS4 can match Halo3 toe to toe plus the MGS movie. New IP exclusive games like Motorstorm and Resistance sold over a 1million copies. Three out of four major markets are swinging toward Sony. M$'s future doesn't look good.

screw next gen consoles, ATARI 2600 FTW!!!

but really, sony needs to get its stuff together by the end of the year or else Halo3 is going to really mess them up. Dont try and deny it, whether its better than killzone 2 or not it will be a mega hit when it comes out and sell millions upon millions. Also, if sony loses another Japanese 3rd party exclusive, they are seriously going to need a miracle for PS3. (especially when its predecessor is outperforming it in every single way)

    Posted Apr 20, 2007 12:24 am PT

Ha ha ha... Most of those games are garbage! They're either bad movie translations (like most are), rereleases of games that are already available for other systems, boring ol' sport games which must be tiring to come out with a new one each season (although it's basically the same title), or original IPs, which have a lot to prove coming against Microsoft's powerful lineup. Good luck to ya!

Everyone seems to be getting all bent out of shape in regards to the graphical power of these machines. It doesn't matter. In the end how much do you honestly care about a few extra particles here and there. I can play Perfect Dark (N64) and still get just as much enjoyment out of it as sitting down and playing Resistance or Gears for a few hours. It's ultimately the gameplay that makes or breaks a systems success, not the textures or bump-mapping. However poor framerate problems (PS3) is going to have to be something that gets worked out before too long for Sony's sake. Both Microsoft and Sony have a strong foothold on the market. Neither is going anywhere soon. They will both do what they have to to survive. Sony will keep pushing games for the PS2 because right now that is where they are turning big profits still. And as little as all of the fan-boys would like to believe that either company will bend to satisfy the customer is pure s#it. They both do what they do to make money, it's all about the money. And let's be honest here. My 360 gets played at least once a day. My PS3 (purchased at launch) saw about 5 days worth with Resistance and another 2 days with Motorstorm. I'm sorry, but if you played them anymore you either ONLY own a PS3 or you're really trying hard to convince yourself that at $600 it was a good purchase. To throw this out there...Halo 3, whether you play it or not, is going to make one of the largest impacts we have seen with next gen systems. I worked at GS when we were taking reserves on these and our numbers hit over 2 million in the first 2.5 months. Bottom line, if you have the money and are a persistent gamer, buy them both, if you can only afford one, go with the 360 for now. You have a much lower chance of having to kick yourself in the ass before we reach 2008.
