Codemasters readies trio of games

Three new titles coming from the TOCA publisher in 2008, including Operation Flashpoint 2.

First up is first-person shooter Operation Flashpoint 2, which will be coming to the PC and "major console formats." The company describes the game as its "most extensive R and D project to date," and says it has already been in preproduction for two years. It will use a new FPS version of the studio's middleware, Neon.

The original game, Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis, was released in 2001 and followed by two expansion packs. The second game will feature a new contemporary setting, along with extensive multiplayer components and a variety of military disciplines to play.

Also being published in 2008 by Codemasters is Rise of the Argonauts, an action role-playing game developed by Liquid Entertainment. Rise of the Argonauts will be set in ancient Greece, with players leading a team of famous warriors including Jason, Hercules, and Atalanta on an epic quest through the ancient land. The game will also be released on the PC and "leading console formats."

Last but not least, 2008 will see the arrival of Race Driver One, which is "the third generation" of the motorsport series that started with the TOCA Touring Cars series and more recently became the TOCA Race Driver series.

Race Driver One will also use the Neon middleware engine--which was also announced to be powering Colin McRae-inspired rally game DiRT--and will feature locations in Europe, the US, and Japan. Both official circuit-based championships and urban street competitions will be playable. Again, the game will be coming in 2008 to the PC and "leading console formats."

Codemasters Studios executive producer Gavin Raeburn commented, "A completely fresh career structure will engage players in an unprecedented range of racing styles as they build a team capable of becoming number one. The Neon engine will be expanded to deliver a new level of visual detail, physics and an astonishing car damage system."

Rise of the Argonauts is looking amazing, can't wait to play the mythical heroes and take on some mythical monsters, the art direction for this game looks excellent.

In Australia, the TOCA Race Driver series was known as V8 Supercars. It was kinda an Australian clone of that game, and featured some Aussie motorsport vehicles. I have 1 and 3. I think the third one is better obviously because it had more freedom and variety. Race Driver One sounds pretty interesting. And I'm just saying that cause it also includes street races. I don't know if it'll be an altered version when it hits Australian markets, but either way, I'm still pretty interested.

Hopefully the new middleware will help them to get their games into the modern age in terms of gameplay and graphics. I'm glad to see that they remain firmly committed to supporting the PC.

Hope they pull OFP2 off... ArmA was dissapointing (though I'm still waiting for Game2). I'm a tad worried because it's being released for consoles as well.

RotA sounds cool too. Hopefully it'll have awesome combat UNLIKE every other RPG out there it seems.

I'm really baffled and angry here at the comments and Codemasters. Some so-called fans of OFP don't know about Armed Assault? Geez. Just goes to tell you how much a name really matters....

@Avenger1324 More like, Codemasters left Bohemia Interactive (developer, see below)
and is making there own game with the title Operation Flashpoint 2. And the developer and owner of the engine used in Operation Flashpoint, went to make ArmA.

Codermasters are the owner of the name Operation Flashpoint, hence this game (well, not the current screenshots shown on GS though. Long story..)

The developer, Bohemia Interactive, was the people who made Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis, Operation Flashpoint: Resistance and the newest game ArmA: Armed Assault (or ArmA: Combat Operation in North America) which is the spiritual successor of the Operation Flashpoint-series.

Didn't most of the people that worked on Operation Flashpoint leave and make Arma - the spiritual successor?

Cold war...wasn't there like no fighting in that? Just tension. It would have to be a pretty far-from-the-truth game to actually be fun. But even then, it would be bull.

It's not the same developer or the engine for that matter. The name is the only thing re-used.

Every screenshot and article before this one is about a different game which doesn't go under the name Operation Flashpoint 2 any more.

The Argonauts game sounds cool, I am a big fan of the film so I wonder how that will turn out. The other game, Operation Flashpoint 2 I'm not bothered about really as I never played the first however Race Driver One, I will have to look into a bit more as I used to like TOCA.

I'll be surprised if any of these games come out for the Wii. Wii versions would have to be developed more or less independently from PC/360/PS3 versions due to the Wii being so underpowered.
