Lost Planet eclipsing PCs in June, sequel possible

[UPDATE] Xbox 360 smash is pulling another platform into its orbit with the assistance of Nvidia; Capcom executive promises more announcements soon.

Ever since its release in January, Lost Planet: Extreme Condition has been a runaway success. The solidly reviewed Xbox 360 title was the best selling game on all non-PC platforms in January, selling over 408,000 copies in the US alone. By the end of February, that tally had shot up to in excess of 527,000 units, according to the latest Figures from the NPD group. To date, the game has topped the 1 million mark sales-wise worldwide.

Now, it appears that Lost Planet will be pulling another platform into its orbit. According to a press release from graphics-chip-maker Nvidia's Japanese subsidiary, Capcom's sci-fi shooter will blast its way onto the PC. Nvidia says it helped Capcom optimize the game so it can use Microsoft DirectX 10 and reach resolutions of up to 2560 x 1600 pixels. However, DirectX 10 is not required to run the game. Naturally, Nvidia touted its GeForce 8 series of GPUs as being the best graphics chips to run Lost Planet on PCs.

[UPDATE] Last night at its Gamers Day San Francisco, Capcom showed off the PC version Lost Planet to a gathering of the game press. It also announced the game would go on sale in North America fairly soon--this coming June--for the retail price of $39.99. Like the 360 version, it will be rated T for Teen.

Since it was originally touted as an Xbox 360 exclusive, Lost Planet's arrival on the PC has irked platform partisans. Capcom's message to them is simple: Get used to it. At the event, the company unveiled its "Internal Framework," a development system which will allow a single game to be developed for multiple platforms simultaneously from the get-go. "We're definitely going to start taking the tack of putting out titles out on multiple platforms," Jack Symon, Capcom's director of brand marketing, told GameSpot.

When asked about the possibility of Lost Planet coming to the PlayStation 3, Symon was vague. "I do think you are going to see announcements going forward with a multiplatform strategy," he said. He was similarly cagey when queried point-blank about a Lost Planet sequel. "Lost Planet performed incredibly well on the 360, and we're excited to put it out on the PC platform," said Symon, "We're definitely proud to have a new IP, and there will be more on Lost Planet for sure."

Symon also said that, like the 360 version, the PC Lost Planet will get content updates that can be downloaded via the Web. However, he would not comment on any pricing or timing.

    Even though Halo 2 is 2 1/2 years old, and not upgraded much, it's a hell of a lot better then Lost Planet, which is mediocre at best.

    Why wait for Halo2 when you can have Lost Planet? A 3yr old port only playable on Vista vs a brand game released a few months ago playable on XP or Vista, you do the math.

    Isn't it going to be a Games for Windows release.. so also using the MS Points system for example to buy/download content and thus use the Xbox/Gaming Live service.

    Well, they said in the article that LP could use DX10, but it doesn't have to. There's (almost) no reason to make it DX9 compatible unless it would be for XP. It will be XP compatible because MS doesn't have enough to say on this matter (probably), otherwise they would do as they did with Halo 2, make a game that's suitable for XP, but only allow it on Vista. MS sucks on this matter, but I think that Capcom sees this in a more sober way, they have no reason to make it "only-for-Vista".

    so is this going to be for Windows Vista only or Windows XP? I'm going to say Windows XP since DirectX10 isn't required, and Capcom will want a huge installed user base.

    ----blamder-drag well its no wonder its not coming out on PS3 cuz 1. PS3 suxks 2. Ps3 uses an ATI graphics card and if Nvidia is making deals with capcom then they arent going to be too happy with them if it goes to PS3----

    Uh I don't know how to break this to you but the PS3 uses an Nvidia GPU and the 360 uses an ATI GPU. I think you are confusing the GPU from the original XBOX with the 360.

    And this constant complain about "exclusive games" I think it is without merit because microsoft, Sony and Nintendo have their very own publishers therefore having exclusive games on their respective consoles. You'll never see Halo on the PS3 and you'll never see Gran Turismo on a 360 or a Wii and the same thing applies to the Mario and Link factory. If third party publishes don't want to keep titles exclusive to a single console it's their problem. Remember that is business and the objective of a business is to make as much money as possible.

    I won't say that Lost Planet will never come out for the PS3, but the likelihood that it will is slim. The reason why Capcom can easily port the game from the 360 to PC is that both systems share similar programming language. I'm sure someone with more technical knowledge of the XNA toolset can explain how it can allow developers to move games from 360 to PC and vice versa with more ease than to the PS3.

    hehe....JasonRTCW, FPS was meant to be played on the PC....just better controls for that type of twitch, is all. However, Microsoft may be tempted to completely screw with the control scheme, but I hope they don't get any control over that...just pisses me off when they deliberately dumb-down a game to put it on the PC, even though many PCs are powerful enough to handle the game on max graphics.

    Just further proof that I wasted my money on the machine. I think that the more gamers can game, the better we are all off. Conversely, to fuel competition and advancement in gaming, companies need to have exclusives. They give consumers a reason to support a system and it's games. They give the competition something to surpass. If there aren't exclusives, then there is no reason to own any particular system . They are all the same. If I can buy 360 "exclusives" for the PC then ultimately the PC is the better investment. More selection of games, better control, and it's constantly evolving. Also, I can do more than game. My 360 won't change, won't significantly evolve, and can't do anything of substance past gaming. At least, not without peripherals. Once companies don't keep "exclusives" exclusive, it's time they go to hell.

    Depresso...I so agree. It's really true. Most people/players doesn't consider the possibility of monopoly and the affect. If they dominate, things WILL cost a lot more because, well sadly to say, they want to make mroe money. Not saying customers who said those are idiots but they simply hven't thought about that when they say those things.

    owe a 360 but have a pc so I might get to play it at last.
    Also do we really want Microsoft to owe all the developers on the planet?
    What are the implications of monopoly, have you thought about it carefully? Have you tried to buy Windows OS recently ? They can charge what they want as they have no competition.
    I think is a good thing we have 360,PS3,Wii and PC to choose from.
    I know some kids take it as opposite clans but it doesn't work like that,
    it doesn't have to. If I could I'd buy them all. Peace.

    post your past education befor talking on behalf of sony,microsoft, ect. if you any reason to tell us how hard it is to transfer games over, or even how to sell a game please post a list of your certificates,degrees or diplomas so we all know where your perspective comes from!

    Cool another one of my 360 games which I can enjoy on PC. When it comes out I think I'll drop XBL as the only games I play on it are TDU and Lost Planet.

    you dont have to use 256/256 on the ps3. you can redirect memory storage so you can use more memory for grafics. so you can use 300 video and 200 rest. the problem is that developers need to rebuild there tools from scratch on the ps3. They cant reuse old codeing for shaders and physic etc. Then you need to gain som profit so they release some games as the work on there tools. thats why ps3 games look bad in the begining. 360 is very mutch like an pc running on shared memory and 3 CPUs. buts as you said all systems have pros/cons

    There wont be as much profit on the PS3 simply because there arent as many PS3s sold as 360s. By the time more PS3s are sold, the game probably wont be as popular or the sequel will be released. From a financial perspective, it wouldnt be worth spending time making this game cross platformable now for the PS3. If anything, PS3 users should hope that the sequel comes out on the PS3. By the way, I played this game and was pleasantly surprized as to how good it actually turned out to be. Maybe some of you fanboys should actually PLAY the game before you judge it!

    When did all of you become the experts on programming games? You're all talking about the technical specs that we've already read about. Then there's the kids who are speaking on behalf of Sony, Microsoft, and the game development companies. Where do you get off talking the way some of you do? Not one of you has proof that it would be easier or more difficult to port a game over to another console. And if you do, then where is the proof? Another interview that we've already read?

    When the immature fanboys from both sides grow up, then come back and talk to the rest of us. We'll be enjoying games for all of the platforms.

    I am happy that Capcom is realizing that the best way to go is multi. I hope they also release it for the PS3 in case they won't be losing money, so stupid PS3 fanboys stop crying us the Nile river (it's only the longest river in the world, it's in africa [sarcasm]).

    Lost Planet is a great game, I gave it an 8.6 on my GS review, and I'm still playing it both online and offline. I'm losing count of how many times I've replayed some of the missions.

    Gears Of War and Lost Planet!,quit judging people without even knowing them!,I'm just stating the facts,I did the same when Playstation 3 owners were outraged by Capcom's decision of multiplatforming games!.....this is useless,I'm never going to outsmart a little ten year old online right?

    1. MS owns both Games for Windows and the xbox so they didn't loose an exsclusive they mearly took it to their other platform, you know kidda like how they brought Bioshock from the PC to the 360 as well.

    2. The PS3 has to spilt its 256 of ram between everything so the CPU has to do a hell of a lot more work.

    4. Both consoles have new IP's and series, GOW, LP, DR, Crackdown are all new IP's that did amazing

    Lost Planet was a pretty fun game to play... However the game's story had more potential. I didn't like the way the story was presented... that and I didn't liked the fact that they went crazy with Mechs later in the game. Hopefully they can improve with the next addition to the series!

They have only said they are going multi to make more money, and that doesnt mean releasing anything on PS3, as the PS3 costs more to dev for, small user base, which means harder to pull a profit after paying for the dev costs to even port something.

    I think Capcom knows(or at least has a clue)that the Sony(Playstation 3)fanbase is going to grown and expand,due to the good games coming to the Playstation 3,and true,it will cost more to develop,but think about the profits and the future of Capcom

    "George_GameGuy X360 has 512mb for both graphics and for the rest. ps3 has 256mb for graphics and 256mb for the rest. 256+256=512. surprised? i think so... there will be UT2007 for ps3, so it can handle GoW and the whole UE3 thing."

    Just because the PS3 has 512 TOTAL, doesnt mean its the same as 512 UNIFIED. The PS3 divided it in half, with half going to system memory and half for video. Totally different than the 360 having 512 unified, that can be used for whatever. 300 for video, 200 for system, etc. So no, Gears wouldnt work on PS3 in its current state, as they stated they had trouble getting it to work with 512 UNIFIED, and 256/256 would be even harder to work with.

    Alot of people here are stating alot of bs things... Such as the HD-DVD not fully supporting HD? Since when? The 360 supports everything HD, the same as the PS3, except the 360 can scale things as appro, the PS3 cannot. People need to get off the whine wagon and realize, both systems have their pros/cons, but totaled, the 360 simply is better for programmers, which results in better gaming and graphics.

    Nice! Its a good game, played it on my friend's X360 and it felt great. Can't wait until it comes out. Although we can't conclude that Lost Planet isn't going to come to the PS3, the Symon dude was pretty vague. But with a success like this, I'm guessing they're going to milk it for all its worth, and that means M-M-M-M-MULTIPLATFORM
