Neverwinter Nights 2 expands

New campaign, companions, and levels coming for Atari's popular PC role-playing game.

An expansion pack for the Obsidian-developed Neverwinter Nights 2 will be coming to North America and Europe in "fall/autumn 2007" and will be titled Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of the Betrayer.

The new expansion takes place shortly after the events of the popular RPG, following the final boss battle with the King of Shadows. The adventure begins--or rather, continues--when the player's character wakes up stranded deep beneath the earth, all alone and surrounded by a horde of evil spirits.

Mask of the Betrayer will be set in Rashemen, close to the powerful nation of Thay. It will feature a new campaign, new levels, dozens of new feats and spells, and new races, classes (and prestige classes), companions, weapons, armor, and crafting options, as well as "hordes" of new monsters and enhanced modding tools.

The first Neverwinter Nights game, featuring classic dungeons-and-dragons gameplay, also included BioWare's Aurora toolset, which let players create their own dungeons and put them online and was released in 2002. The original spawned several expansion packs, including Neverwinter Nights: Shadows of Undrentide, as well as the sequel. The franchise has sold 3 million copies to date in more than 40 countries and in 10 languages.

After so much RTS games, it's good to see some RPGs coming out, even if they are just expasion packs.

They did include AA support since the 1.3 patch

How well can it carry on from the previous game, considering the many ways you can finish it?

Did they ever implement anti-aliasing support for this game? I would hope that would come first before expansion packs. Maybe I'll check back and see if it has ever been patched to fix that.

it kind of buggs me that gamespot calls it NN2 Mask of the betrayer in the upper right corner. Lets hope that it's just a typo.

Until they remake the game engine, I won't buy any other NWN2 product from OE. Such a waste potiental, what is the point of good gameplay, good story for when we CAN't play it?
edited: even with 1.03 patch, the quality graphic/performance requirement is unreasonable. imho >_

I'd be much happier if they made the original NWN2 more stable first before releasing a damn expansion. I still get stupid crash bugs when loading up a new area or what not.

    Great news!
    Expansions are always nice.
New classes, monsters, areas, placeables, spells, feats...
    Yay!!!

I knew it, and expansion! Not quite the setting I imagined, but still good. With the lame non-ending "ending" you got most of the time in NWN2, an expansion pack was inevitable! No doubt it'll have "epic" levels and such.

They want this out by the holidays so there is a big chance it might come out pretty rushed. My hope is that they really don't hold out on a lot of patch content that should be in the game and wait for the this expansion to do it. It would be terrible if obsidian did such a thing

Sounds great. I knew the hero hadn't been killed in the canonical version of events. I hope they enhance some things, yes, but I was very satisfied with NWN2 - despite all of its flaws - and I look forward to spending another few hundred hours on this upcoming gem. It'll be nice to see some of Rashemen as well... I think they actually hinted at this in the game once or twice.

    So the saga continues...

At least they are talking about releasing future updates and genuinely seem committed to them. They seem to have mastered some method to the means now, not to mention some veneer of confidence...what with the developer musing about wishing for another go at KOTOR and even a RPG based on post-apocalyptic setting.

What about the 'Black Dog' mod derived from the past 'Baldur's Gate 3' project that Mr.Sawyer was reportedly working on as a personal project? How is this going to be affected with the advent of an expansion? What is troubling is by the time the first expansion was released for the original NWN, the community was well on its way for providing huge amount of user created content for the engine that it affected some relevance for either the continuation of the plot or the additional assets. How NWN2 compares and what its state of the community participation is depend on its improvement of multiplayer performance and stability...

@ Hell3ent: dude, I'd like to see how good Bioware would fare if they had to make a game from zero with nothing but a 5 year old engine and 1 year time...

Besides the problems and performance issues of NWN2 it quickly turned into an amazing and highly addicting game. Im very happy to see an expansion come it. It's wat made the first NWN great too.

As some of you say, NWN2 was buggy as h***, that's why I can't enjoy it as much NWN, but if you endure and play through the game you'll have a really memorable experience. Awesome characters and story, then I can't complain that much about bugs, because there's too few games with a really solid story.

WOOHOOOOO!!! This is awesome, I absolutely love NWN2, I think it was under-appreciated, even though it wasn't as good as NWN.

I really hope that this expansion follows the trend of the original NWN expansions, those campaigns where a lot better than the original NWN campaign. Hordes of the Underdark is one of the best expansions EVER.

    D&D FOREVER!!!

I played the original NWN multi-player to death. Those were some great times. NWN2 disappoints highly in that regard. I had some high hopes for it, but I guess they thought the single player was more important. It's still a decent enough game that did absolutely nothing to improve on the original.

Baldur's Gate managed to create an amazing world with a rich, deep story and memorable characters, all with just 7-8 levels. I guess if you can't make a great story, you compensate with more levelgrinding.

The reports of bugs in NWN2 are greatly exaggerated. The game was playable out of the box, even if the engine isnt optimizsed very well and its a bit of a resource hog. But I had relativeily few crashes given the ammount of hours I put into the game, and the patchs have definatly improved the games performance as well. The game is definatly worth buying, and will even be moreso when the expansion comes out.

too bad it was so bugged i couldnt finish the game, i truly loved it though! I played like 40 hours in a week it was so fun, but i was also stranded in my house bc of a blizzard...

While I enjoyed NWN2 and had few bug related problems, I hope to god they fix the awful AI as well as fix online play and the DM client. If they do that, I'll get the expansion, if not, guess I'll have to wait for NWN3..

I hope they redo the graphics is right. The original game had horrible character design, this one looks just as bad. I hope they fix all of these bugs that GS also goes on and on about too. I might pick this game up though once the price drops.

I hope they redo the character models. This game is ugly! Gamespot gave its graphics a 6 out of 10, and I think that's about right.

I'm still going through the SP campaign of NWN2, and I'm pretty impressed. None of the bugs that were initially in the game have been a problem for me, just so long as you patch it. Anyway, good news for all NWN fans...
