No Metroid 3 before June confirmed

Reggie Fils-Aime confirms what Samus fans feared--Metroid Prime 3: Corruption won't be available until the back end of 2007 at the earliest.

The retail success of Nintendo's Wii has been one of the top stories in the gaming industry since the launch of the current crop of home consoles. Now, fanboys are focusing their attention on another critical aspect of Nintendo's turnaround--first-party games for the new system.

The lid has been kept tight on several of the company's familiar names, one being the latest in Nintendo's sci-fi series, Metroid Prime 3: Corruption. Nintendo's most recent slate of releases did not include the game even though back in December, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime told Newsweek correspondent N'Gai Croal that it would be coming out "early in 2007."

Croal got a chance to catch up with Fils-Aime last month at GDC 2007, and in an interview posted yesterday asked him the obvious question: Where is Metroid?

"Metroid is not going to ship by June," said Fils-Aime. "And the fact with Metroid is we want to make sure that that game is perfect."

Fils-Aime points out that Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, released on the GameCube in 2004, didn't meet sales expectations even though it was well received by critics. "We want the sell-through as well as the critical acclaim for Metroid Prime 3: Corruption to be the best in the series, and that's a lofty bar," Fils-Aime explained. "To do that is taking a little bit more time than we had anticipated. But it's coming. And it will be great."

Hey, it's better than coming out AFTER school starts! Metroid in august! (Not lying) I just hope they got rid of the rest of the Hunters, seriously, Metroid Prime: Hunters was one of the biggest flops ever, showing that Metroid is much better as a single-player game too.

If anything, let's hope they brought back some more great stuff from Super Metroid, like they did in Metroid Prime 2: Echoes. (Screw Attack FTW!)

I don't mind the delay. I do dislike the slow release of media.

It always annoys me when people complain about a game being delayed. For f**ks sake be patient! Game delays are ultimately a good thing.

Slamdunk, why do you want multiple characters? That would suck in Metroid, only Samus is a true hero. Introducing new playable characters in the series would "corrupt" it.

This is so gay They had better make this game as good as I expect it to be since they're making me wait so long. It's already bad enough that I have to wait until June for Brawl so this game had better be perfect!

I'd rather wait and let them spend time on the game and make it awesome!!!.

I'm glad there not rushing it.

This better be good. And it better have online play... you can't hold the game back and not put online play in it. That would just be wrong.

i totally agree sirspazm02. I think those things would be good for the game (co-op and so on), but samus has always done it alone and that makes it fun. I would like to enjoy the expeirence with a friend however, so it would be cool if it could be added, and done in metroid fasion. A new charicter, with its own story would be a cool alliance if it fit into the story. My complaint on this issue is that, if it is done incorrectly or a second player just controlls another samus (master chief in co-op halo) than it would be a lame and incorherent fix. Hopefully however, we'll end up with a great Metroid game, not a built for ratings game.

You see, metroiddeity, i complety agree with you that MP3 should have "a great story, game, adventure, and experiece. ", but as Regiee said "And the fact with Metroid is we want to make sure that that game is perfect." I mean personally, I think that adding on vehicles(technically they already have with turrets in MP2), or Co-op make the game that much better. Seriously. And for all you people who compare Metroid to Halo, why?. They aren't that similar really. Sure they are both somewhat FPss, but the gameplay of halo is nothing lke the gameplay of metroid. Oh, and to what Mrglorp said about taking forever, Like SC Ghost

  • metroiddeity

    Posted Apr 9, 2007 12:18 pm PT

I disagree with caz666 and slamdunk787. Metroid will not be able to compete with halo by simply cutting and pasting the same ideas into the game (vehicles, co-op...). The thing that seperates metroid is its lack of conformity, and its creative ways to find what people really like. The series has stayed true to itself in the 2-d days and the fact that it has made it into the 3-d world doesn't mean it has to follow the shooter convensions. I do agree that co-op play may be fun, online play would be great, and possibly multiple players would spice it up, but truth be told, metroid would only be a improvement on halo, and not the stand out game metroid should be. The use of the Wii controllers, tons of new enemies, developing story, the return of the bounty hunters, and the classic metroid feel will put this game on top of halo and any others on its level. I mean come on, halo with its lack of deep story and enemy design leaves only a fun multi-player experience. So lets just hope that Metroid does what it does, give us a great game where samus and yourself will once again go deep into a great story, game, adventure, and experiece. Who agrees???

  • caz666

    Posted Apr 8, 2007 11:43 pm PT

i agree with slamdunk787. the new metroid should be more interactive with new vehicles and stuff, i really think adding a over-the-net gameplay feature would make the game even better then what its going to be.

  • slamdunk787

    Posted Apr 8, 2007 2:30 pm PT

This game better have multiple character's you can choose, co-op play (both on the same console and over the net), an excellent sci-fi plot, multiple endings, vehicles you can commander, and an innovative experience. It better at least go toe to toe with Halo 3-who agrees???

They can take as long as they need.(well not like 3 years) as long the time gos to making the game NOT suck. The reason MP2 didn't sell well was, that most people thought it was to hard. I liked how hard it was

    @theKSMM

Probably means they are adding more to the game, just think of what kept happening with Zelda. It kept getting pushed back because they were changing it, adding more to it, perfecting the system and making it an even greater game. I don't care how long the wait is as long as we get it. I'm sure what Nintendo is doing with it is all for the best and they haven't steered us wrong yet with anything so I'm not too worried about what is going on.

    @ BlueFlameBat

The Wii has barely been out for like 6 months now, give things some more time, we still got some great games and other great games will come out before then. Chill out and give it some time.

I totally agree with Fils-Aime. I mean, I want the game really badly but I'll wait as long as they need to make it perfect. Whatever it takes to make the game freakin' awesome is enough for me.

I'm looking forward to sampling Metroid for the first time (well, maybe the second) in this title. But I wonder why he thinks the later release date will help to boost sales. Does that mean they're targeting a holiday release? Because otherwise the only thing that should matter for the development team is when is it ready to ship!

Good. Keep the game back to try and make it the best. Don't just release games with bugs in them and other things and such.
I bet its going to be worth the wait.
And am telling you all, am not JUST SAYING THAT.
I think this game when it finally arrives is going to be truly somthing special.
Its going to probably change the way we think about video games, period.(not like the Wii hasn't/isn't already doing that?)
    Enough said.

one of the workers at the local eb games said 3rd parties complained that their games wouldn't sell against ninty's strong titles. he reckons a launch window up until september where 3rd's can only launch, so their titles can compete. don't know how right this it....?

  • bam226

    Posted Apr 5, 2007 8:59 pm PT

Lets hope they change up the formula a bit for the 3rd. I loved Prime for the gcube but Echoes felt to much like the first. The only difference was going back in forth through light and dark worlds that were basically the same. Some of the enemies were the same, weapons, music even Samus losing all her weapons....again. Cmon Nintendo change the formula alittle open up the fighting space than just a cave or lab, make it more open world add some destructable envirorments, instead of opening a door with a paticular weapon by shooting it why not just blow it off its hinges when it gets hit . She has a freaking ARM CANNON for Heavens sake! Well thats all I have to say I know a bunch of fanboys will disagree sayin its THE GREATEST SEQUAL SINCE SLICE BREAD!!! but frankly, I got better things to worry or read about.

I always new it wasn't coming out any time soon. There hasn't been any news about the game since the Wii was released. Remeber MP Hunters? It was shown before the DS was released and everyone expected it to come out close to launch.

It came out a little more than one year later.

My prediction is MP3 will come out Q1 of 08. Which is cool with me. We got SSBB and Super Mario Galaxy this year!
