PS3 breaks UK console records

Chart Track says approximately 165,000 PlayStation 3s were sold in console's first two days on market in UK, second-best regional debut only to PSP.

UK gamers apparently didn't hold a grudge after Sony delayed the launch of the PlayStation 3 in Europe for three months. The console went on sale in the UK this past weekend, and the first round of sales numbers are in.

According to industry watcher Chart Track, the PS3 became the fastest-selling home console (does not include portables) in UK history, with almost 165,000 moved in its first two days on sale.

The PS3 was still behind a portable in the all-time gaming platform ranks, but it's doubtful that Sony will mind. The PlayStation Portable holds the record for fastest-selling gaming console with approximately 185,000 sold in its first two days on sale. The previous record holder for home consoles was the Wii, which sold more than 50,000 units in its first 12 hours, and was widely reported to have sold approximately 105,000 units in its opening weekend.

The PS3 helped two Sony software titles take the top spots on the UK's all-formats chart last week, with Resistance: Fall of Man and Motorstorm falling in slots one and two, respectively. Overall, six of the top 10 all-formats games were PS3 titles.

    I wouldn't stand behind either company. These two tyrants took over the gaming industry, stomping on Nintendo, Sega, and countless others. As to say which console is better is a ridiculous argument. The PS3 has better hardware and free online gaming, you just pay more up front. Microsoft has more game titles, costs less up front, and MS has bought up as many gaming titles as they could. So there will always be a competition. COMPETITION IS GOOD, it raises the bar for each company. POINT BLANK
    Microsoft = EVIL
    SONY = EVIL
    Which is the lesser of the two. It doesn't matter to me. You?

    I dont understand XBOX LIVE ,pay money for online play which u can get on PS3 for free.the only advantage for 360 live is that u get acheivments witch get you t-shirts,wow.I dont need icons and t-shirts to prove im an okay gamer.i dont know ehy i would want to pay 40£ a year for icons and t-shirts.WHAT A RIP OFF!!

    The very good games part! Lots of potential games that "look" awesome in previews and demos but have yet to be played or completed. Lair looks great but is HD only so won't be worth squit to none HDTV owners, everything else is just potential. There hasn't been a single game yet that delivers what Sony have claimed about the console, they claimed PS2 was capable of Toy Story 2 graphics but they never happened, and if they think Little Big Planet is a console seller they must have a screw loose.

    ps3 flopped already, over hyped and games on it are 90% games which are on 360 and only game which i would even buy a ps3 for is final fantasy series. 360 more powerful than ps3 on what i'v seen, only a game or 2 tat look better is oblivion only because they had over a year to improve it, optimise etc.

    PS3 is going to own Europe, Asia and Australia market. The US market is in swing stage. Console war is about business strategy, market and money. Xbox fanboy still dreaming that they got THE games. What is the chance every major developers' flagship game will be on Xbox360?     Perfect - with such a dramatic fall in sales I shouldn't have to wait longer than about 8 months until the price drops from its ridiculous level at the moment. I understand the power of the hardware in it, but no games console should ever cost that much.

It seems the potential of the PS3 is somewhat less than Sony claimed, funny that, not like Sony to tell fibs (cough, cough, rumble being last gen and not working with motion sensors, couhg, cough, PS3 will have 100% backwards compatability)

    Don't panic! Xbox don't have any exclusive from Sony. It is mult-platform but not exclusive. DMC4, GTA4 or Creed, Xbox360 don't have exclusive on them. PS3 hardware outclass Xbox360 by a miles. PS game will run better and more beautiful than xbox360.

    Sony also need to stop shooting themselves in the foot, it can hardly ahve helped the announcements of Backwards Compatability being dropped just prior to launch and then the rumble fiasco where they were shown to be "less than truthful" about rumble not working with the motion sensors. Nor has it helped that a lot of the launch titles that were ports seem to have been done with the minimum amount of effort on behalf of the publishers.

    Went game shopping with my kid last weekend and every game shop we hit had stacks of unsold PS3's, notices that they ARE in stock, yet the PS3 displays were notable only for the lack of anyone looking at them, and this was lunchtime saturday. It might make 700k sold but at the current rate thats going to be around the end of August, providing theres no further slump or summer sales drought, that can hardly be classed as a sucess. Right now its looking like the only people that seem to be rushing out and buying them are the die hard Sony fans who would buy a brick if Sony told them it could play DVD's.

    i trust PS3 man!

    i 100% know that PS3 is a much more greater and stronger than xbox360 as it offers much more features and of course i trust SONY company.The only thing is that PS3 has to think about games,they have to brought more exclusive titles in them.As CAPCOM is now with xbox360,capcom is not publishing games for PS3 and that of PS3 title(devil may cry 4)bringing to xbox360.I dont know what CAPCOM is doing whether they are not trusting PS3 or they are publishing games to that console that has large sales figures.As 360 was first released it can has large sales figures but CAPCOM gotta trust PS3 as it has break the UK consoles records with 165,000 sold in UK.

    so game publishers and all the gamers out there trust PS3.i m sure that it will provide great games in future while it has already brought HOME for online gaming.

    what people talk about PS3?good or bad! it doesnt matters to me because i am always with PS3....

    It is the first monthly total sales that important. If PS3 make it over 700000 units in Europe. That will be a success. Next they need to put out good games, start marketing campaign and counter smear campaign strategy

    I like the PS3 and will eventually get one after my exams in June, to give my opinion on the PS3 there is no real point of getting a PS3 until after the summer time because thats when the GOOD maybe GREAT games start coming out and ohh yeah the online service BIG improvement which is of course HOME, once Home is available we will start seeing what the PS3 has for the future, and come on smoothn00dle the XBOX aint that bad. don't forget LittleBigPlanet coming online this fall

    Interesting... I wonder how many people in the UK own a Wii or a 360, that would give the article better perspective and less Hype. The next 8 months will determine which console dominates the UK. It's all about this Holiday Season.

    It will not last. The Wii is outselling both XBOX360 and PS3 worldwide and Wii and PS3 they came out about the same day worldwide.

    I respect your attitude. Every console has it strength and weakness. The market can't support 3 consoles at once. In long term, game developers will have to choose side because the cost of developing a game for each console is not economical. The weakest link is xbox360. Not even half as powerful as PS3, no blue-ray for HD market and try to target every market. Xbox fanboy talk crap just got me fire up. I like bikes too. thinking buying one. Ducat or Honda

    Congrats for a good launch! I said, in a previous post, that I think the PS3 is the strongest system available. But there are many intangibles; what do you like to play? Which system has the game(s) you want to play?

    I'm bored with the "fanboy" approach to comments. The XBOX 360, Wii, and PS3 have many great features and games. So, why the bashing? If you have it (or have played it) tell us all what's good. Help those folks still on the fence which way to go. I own a PS3, a PSP, and a PS2. But I've played my friends systems, and they all have some great stuff. I enjoy playing all my old favorites from previous machines, but love seeing what is really "new" out there, (and I've seen some terrific games on all the platforms.)

    Allow me a quick analogy. I ride Harley-Davidson, and many people ask me, "What's the best bike?" I PREFER HD, but know that everyone builds a great motorcycle.So I always ask, "what kind of riding do you like to do?" Not "Honda sucks," etc. (Get it?) If you bought ANY system, it's because you like it best, and help the rest of us to learn what you found that makes yours the best for you. Thanks for letting me put my 2 cents in. Everyone enjoy. Every trick one guy comes up with, makes all of our games better.

    "Media Create Co. on Fri. reported that the Xbox 360 sold 3,492 units between Mar. 19 and Mar. 25. By comparison, the hardware sold 2,910 units the week prior."

    I think the Wii would have sold faster if Nintendo could have got more Nintendo Wiis in stock. It's a good start from Sony but can it keep up with Nintendo Wii and XBOX360. The PSP sold faster than the DS when it came out but it's now a long way behind it.

    lol that is total BS, sony may be behind wii with the PS3, but the PS2 proves that sony still has an advantage over nintendo. PS2 out sold the wii in a lot of months after its launch. Resistance, to a lot of people (especially in UK) is a game with better graphics and gameplay then anything for the wii (which still has no online game). Gears of War as well, destroys the wii in both categories selling more copies then any wii game. Their are a lot of good games coming up with both good graphics and gameplay and those are the kind of games that matter to me. Also all the owners of HDTV which the wii has no effect on and only increases the risk of breaking your HDTV with its faulty controller. The fact that the PS3 outsold wii in UK despite a long delay proves how badly they wanted PS3 for their HDTV's. Sony is not behind anyone, in fact they are ahead having both PS1 and PS2 be so successful (PS2 selling 110 million units).

    Graphics don't make games good they make them look good playability are what matters. Games are made to be fun and Nintendo knows that DS and Wii doing that to make games fun. Sony are behind Nintendo and Microsoft.

    first of all check your spelling before submitting your post in a haste. Next, the DS and wii are not outselling in the UK which means their not taken in by touch-screen or motion sensing. Just because its outselling here does not make it better. And the fact that you would come to a PS3 success topic to make hate remarks about it shows how immature you are and just shows the Xbox360/PS3 owners as more intelligent investors. If you enjoy a console just becuase you can touch a screen or fling your arm then thats really sad.

    wow chocolate, your just a lousy wii fan boy who can't accept the PS3 or xbox360 outselling your favorite console. I never heard anyone complain the way you do, even PS3 fan boys can accept their favorite console being outsold. The facts are the PS2 out sold the wii as well in most months of 2007. My cousin owns PC, a wii and a PS2, and after defeating zelda he lost interest in it. I have tried the wii and I have to say I am impressed with zelda, but I won't get a console for one game. My cousin plays kingdom hearts for PS2 and Graal online for PC more then his wii. UK gamers look for more then just motion sensing or touch-screen. They prefer consoles that give you more options and features. That's what the xbox360, PSP, and PS3 offer.

    It might be the fastest selling console but that doesn't mean anything. The PSP were fast selling and they are now along way behind the Nintendo DS. The same might happen with the PS3 falling way behind XBOX360 and Wii in the long run.

    I wish people would grow up a little. It's ok to support a console you've invested in, but why bother talking down other consoles? Well done to Sony for setting the two fastes-selling console records. I've no plans on buying a PS3 in the forseable future myself, but if things pick up, i'll gladly invest.
