More heroes, villains joining 360 Ultimate Alliance

Activision releasing downloadable packs in April; will feature eight new playable characters such as Hulk, Cyclops, Magneto.

Some Marvel comics fans may have felt that Activision used a bit of hyperbole when they used the word "Ultimate" in their 2006 Xbox 360 release Marvel: Ultimate Alliance. The Incredible Hulk, Cyclops, and Nightcrawler were among the popular characters not playable in the Xbox 360 version, but now it appears that Activision is fixing that.

The publisher has announced that new downloadable content packs for the game will be available on Xbox Live Marketplace in April. The Hero pack and Villain pack will cost 500 Microsoft points ($6.25) each, or can be purchased together for 800 Microsoft points ($10). For those who want to instill fear in those who look at their gamer profiles, Heroes and Villains picture packs will also be available for 80 Microsoft points ($1) apiece.

The two new packs feature eight new playable characters: The Incredible Hulk, Hawkeye, Nightcrawler, Cyclops, Magneto, Doctor Doom, Venom, and Sabretooth. Presumably the latter four will be featured in the Villains pack, and the previous four in the Heroes pack (Activision did not specify in its announcement). In addition to coming with their own unique powers and abilities, the heroes will be accompanied by new achievement points.

Marvel: Ultimate Alliance for the Xbox 360 is rated T for Teen and retails for $59.99. The game was also released on the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, Wii, Xbox, PlayStation Portable, PC, and Game Boy Advance. For more information, read GameSpot's review.

    Well, I didn't pay for my copy of Marvel: UA (birthday gift) so paying $10 for 8 great characters sounds worth it... but it'd be worth it even if the $60 came out of my pocket to begin with... finally, some downloadable content that's WORTH IT!

    April 10th is official date. It was sent out in the weekly Marvel Newsletter. That's next Tuesday.

    I don't think they are JUST adding the characters...They mentioned Achievement points, so I'm assuming they must be tied to something! Perhaps to the danger room training missions? But no matter what they added it doesn't sound like it's worthy to be a paid download, this should be free. I love the Hulk, but he's not worth another $6.25 on top of the $60 I paid for the game when it first came out!

    BigSteve88, everyone who has a 360 is going to have XBL, at the very least the silver edition. And for those that dont have an internet connection well.... get with the times people, internet is as common as a tv in every household

    BigSteve88: You don't have XBL at all? Not even a silver membership? Do you not have an internet connection at your house? If you do, you should set up an XBL account. It's free unless you want to play multiplayer games.

    Having the pack be DLC makes it cheaper since there's no production, packaging, and distribution costs.

    ok, how come they have to be in the xbox live marketplace, why not in stores, don't get me wrong i love the fact that there's additional characters but come on some of us don't have xbox live

    Problem is how can there be a villains pack without any missions. I don't really think it would be fun if Dr. Doom were fighting himself in the last mission of the game.

    There is still a lot of people playing this online, I know a group of gamers that play this once a week. New characters are good for this community, I personally can't wait to try them out.

    As far as Hulk, Cyclops, and Nightcrawler go, they already have movesets in the game, so it becomes more a cosmetic thing than anything else. The Thing, Ms. Marvel, and Deadpool can all do a number of things one might have attributed to the above characters (respectively, at that). Hawkeye's already in the PSP game, as well, and the last time there was a Sabretooth build, it was pretty similar to Wolverine (XML2 PC version).

    I see that this could be a good thing for fanatics of the game, but for the average player this is useless. Just as XAF1 said, new characters without new missions is kind of a waste... and it's not as though this game was so amazing to begin with. I don't know why Marvel/DC don't get the idea that a game like UT or Oblivion is a better model for their franchise than endless diablo clones.

    The main point that most people are missing is that this game has been out a while. THEY ARE NOT ADDING MISSIONS JUST CHARACTERS. They could have waited until they released another game to add the characters. The packs are not adding anything that really expands the game---more AC points whoopie. If you are a late UA adopter or a slacker that never finished the game---because you were bored with it---these packs are good for you. But, at this point this is really too little too late. I'm a huge Marvel/DC comic fan but this is just dumb of Activision. Neither the graphic or game play made the game that compelling for a 3rd visit after completing it the 1st two times---which I drudged through. This is one of those games one forgets after a few months and just adding characters isn't enough to bring it back to life. I couldn't even find anyone online who was playing it after it came out. The game just could have been so much more.

    Actually, in response to the last few folks: Shivering Isles is actually content. Nearly 1 GB of content. While I was bored with Oblivion, at least that's something new. I'm sure most of us can afford the content downloads; we're mostly noting how stupid the downloads are. This is one step up from the Horse Armor download in Oblivon -- idiotic to say the least. I should probably also mention how, for 10 bucks, you really should instead pick up Castlevania SoTN, which is actually not senseless additions. For 10 bucks, the addition of a handful of art files with a few intriguing animations is pure crap. If they had 100 characters and offered this content I'd STILL think it was stupid as hell. And companies going out of business? I remember a time when companies actually offered GOOD content -- you know; expansion packs. **** like this was generally offered free. The only company that stands a chance of not **** over the consumer base via ****ty half-assed content might be Bioware -- we'll see.

    (Whine, whine, whine, I actually have to pay for stuff that I use.) Many of you need to grow up. These companies are here to make a profit. Hopefully that will give them incentive to keep making games we want to play. Would you rather see these companies go out of business just so you can get free downloads? If you can't afford $10, which is the cost of two value meals at most fast food joints, then you need to stop buying video games and save your money. This is great for people who just bought this game or want to reinvigorate their purchase. I still have characters off the stock purchase that I haven't played yet so this will definitely be sweet for me. If you don't like it, don't buy it. If they had included 100 characters and then offered this content, people would still be complaining.

    Most of you are talking trash about having to pay for extra characters for marvel ua when you are the same ones who are going to download shivering isles for oblivion, a game that I got bored with after ten minutes of play.

    i dunno, $10 *is* kinda steep. i mean, sure, it's optional, but at the same time, it sucks when you really want something, so you get it, but you feel like you're getting screwed in the process. just think about it: technically, *all* games are "optional," but we'd be pissed off if every xbox 360 game started retailing for $80 a pop. just cuz its optional doesn't mean its right.

    I like the game, but its just button mashing. This would interest me alot more if it had a better combat system. Playing God of War 2 has shown me how lame this game is. I guess i will pass.

    Marvel UA is old news now !! If a game company doesn't come out with updates about 6 to 8 weeks after a title has been released it starts heading to the trade pile. The Hero pack and Villain pack will cost 500 Microsoft points ($6.25) each, or can be purchased together for 800 Microsoft points ($10). For those who want to instill fear in those who look at their gamer profiles. Here's an idea instead of screwing us for what I see as 4 dollar patch. Why didn't they just give us a limited or special edition we could send away for that had extra missions. Even better give us a bigger game and make it two discs.

    MJ22see, the game developers are in charge of down loadable content not MS. So if it cost money on the 360 it would others as well unless the consoles company wanted to pay the fee.

    no its not, didnt you know that some companys are complayning including the makers of gears of war (epic) that they want to give their DLC for free but microsoft wants to keep it the way that every company charges the customer so that no company falls out of line for charging $ (yes EA)
