Capcom responds to fans' rage

Exec makes statement on the official forums after PS3 fans send petition slamming the decision to take Devil May Cry 4 multiplatform.

Last week, Capcom joined the latest in a string of announcements from various companies when it said that one of its upcoming games, Devil May Cry 4, would now be going multiplatform.

Devil May Cry 4 is set to be the latest in a growing list of games which will be appearing on both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, after being previously slated as format-exclusive to one or the other.

The result of its announcement may well have taken Capcom by surprise. PlayStation fans chose to hit out at the Osaka, Japan-based company, which has produced such games as Okami, Viewtiful Joe, and the Resident Evil and Breath of Fire franchises. The fans even went as far as setting up an online petition, stating that "the undersigned" would boycott Capcom's products unless it reversed its decision and kept the game exclusive to the PS3.

In response to a thread on the official Capcom forums titled "What are you thinking, Capcom?" the company's senior director of strategic planning and research, Christian Svensson, said, "We are certainly moved that people are so passionate about our products that they would go to such extremes."

He continued, "At the same time we feel that allowing more people access to our content pleases far more people than it displeases (after all, we're not denying DMC4 to anyone that was already going to get it). It really is the best decision for the company and for consumers." He later locked the thread, stating that it had "run its course, gone off course, rolled down a cliff, hit a cow, and then exploded."

The full petition, available on the Petition Online Web site, reads, "To: Capcom, We (The people that have signed this petition) feel very left out in your decision to make Devil May Cry 4 a Multi-Platform title, and hereby agree to boycott your sale of Capcom affiliated games. This is due to your decision to turn your back on your most faithful gaming company. For years we have enjoyed games, we have reaped the benefits of your committment [sic] to Sony. We find it absolutely demoralizing for not only the gamers, but also Sony itself. We want you to know that will not, and should not stand for your actions, and therefore withold [sic] our option of buying your product."

The petition had, as of press time, received a total of more than 7,500 signatures. Though with samples including, "This petition is retarded," "This is the stupidest thing I've ever seen," and "I got a big ****," it's hard to gauge how accurate a judge of outrage it is.

I love all the [sic], shows how a bunch of uneducated 12 year olds those retards are. I own a PS3 but would I boycott a company because they decided to go multiplatform and to offer products to a larger consumer base? Of course not.

i dont no why they feel they have a say on how the game is distributed since they probably dont own and stock or rights to capcom, we the ps3 fanboys need to stfu and enjoy the ps3 rather than be pissed that its losing to its rival, because i bought a 400$ console to loathe the other one I AM SO HARDCORE!!! Fanboys are uber gay and frustrated cause unconsciously they too doubt sony's capabilities to bring anything good to the table

you mean every game should ideally be on PC. that way everyone could play it.if you don't want to spend too much money then fine you can buy an affordable PC and still play the game. Its that sort of choice that made the PC great but unfortunately this isn't an ideal world!

To the guys who started this petetion, actually to "fanboys" every where. Turn off your console, wander blinking into the light. find a girl, get laid. Igot a PS3 due to previous brand loyalty and i wanted blu ray. I'm happy with it, the 360 is easily as good as the PS3, better in some aspect, worse in others but who actually cares. Unless you own stock or worked on the development of the console why do you care? Every game should be multi platform. More sales means more money means more developmet. It's a circle. soem people need to grow up.

The last time I checked Capcom is a 3rd party developer, with that in mind it would be stupid for Capcom to keep DMC4 solely on PS3. If I make a great product it would be in my best interest to present my product to the best distributor to get my product out to as much homes as possible. Capcom should put DMC4 on the Wii; I would very interested to see how they would incorporate the Wii remote controller. Multiplatforming gives us the consumer the power of choice to choose which game we can play on whatever console we choose. I can understand why some of us are pissed off with Capcom’s decision. It hard to justify an expensive purchase of Sony’s PS3 when “their stronger title” (DMC4) are available on a cost effective console XBOX 360.

All I have to say is ZZZOMG. Seriously...how in the world can anyone see producing an awesome game going multiplatform as a bad thing? I guess if you have stock in Sony it would be bad thing. More likely, it's just a bunch of PS Fanboy whiners. I hope whoever started the petition is getting paid by Sony. I own a PS1, PS2, PSP, XBOX and XBOX 360, so I have no loyalty to either conglomerate. Capcom needs to make money, and they are not going to make money selling this game to a market of 5 million when they can go multiplatform and have 14 million xbox 360 owners in the market plus god only knows how many PC owners. I'm thrilled that I don't have to go buy a PS3 until FF and or GoW3 come out. This is as bad as the BS flying around that M$ paid EA to make MAdden 08 have a crummy frame rate for the ps3...please. The ps3 is a fine machine that developers just need more time with. The first set of games that came out for the 360 weren't all that great either.

maybe a lot of customers lost a reason to buy a PS3 but still,
now the game will defently sell more so then Capcom will have a bigger budget to make the next one in the series,
and a bigger budget means a bigger change of getting another awesome game XD

Wow. This just goes to show how egoistic and self-centered todays society has become. I don't own a single console, but many of my friends do, and I play consoles at game stores. One of the games series I've spent the most time in front of a shop console with is Devil May Cry. I love that kind of game, and the style is amazing. Three days ago, I noticed that DMC3 was available on steam. I've been playing it constantly since then. And my first thought was "man, I've got to tell my friends so they can get this too." You talk about loyalty and betrayal, but you give no thought to those who CAN'T get a console. With the price of the PS3, that's going to be quite a few. Why can't you let the people who have just gotten a small taste of it enjoy this too? Now, if Capcom was selling the franchise to someone, I could have understood it. I can't afford a PS3, but I can scratch together enough money for a game. I've spent all my free time playing DMC3 since I got it, and when DMC4 is out I'm going to buy it, and play it until my eyes bleed - instead of standing in front of a store console until the cashier kicks me out of the store. You should be happy that more people will get to enjoy it, instead of complaining about Capcom "betraying" you. And that's enough ranting from me today.

MUCH RESPECT to you! A sensible point you have made, not everyone can convince their parents to get them such an expensive machine. Not everyone is rolling in cash like some people are. Some people have lives to live, people to care for. Having it multiplatform lets people who can't afford to buy a next gen console atm choice, instead of having to go out and buy the the latest console. Multi platform should mean more competition which means prices lowered.

lozandier... thank you for being the voice of reason, i agree with you 100% I also am thrilled it will be arriving on 360, if anyone is alienting anyone i would have to say it was sony for making such an expensive machine... that doesnt even offer much above the 360 yet is double the price... you just need to click on a random page on that petition to see the kind of people who care about this and quite frankly it made me feel ill looking at some of those comments...

Some of you talking about "loyalty" are complete idiots, especially people talking about "Devil May Cry 4 coming to 360 is like Halo coming to PS3." First of all, the red-blooded gamers saying this have completely slanted perceptions. Capcom is a THIRD PARTY developer. Unless they have made a contract to make a franchise exclusive to a console or is making a game that's Sony property (making them a SECOND-PARTY like Retro Studios with the Metroid Prime Series), they can make a franchise to ANY system they want; Bungie is a FIRST-PARTY developer, so their rights are much more "restrictive" than a third party developer. Halo is a property of MICROSOFT. Devil May Cry is NOT a property of Sony. It's ironic you people call yourselves "Hardcore Gamers/Smart Gamers' and you people don't understand the rights and hierarchy of Console Videos Games. Capcom previously made Devil May Cry, if I'm not missing anything here, only on Playstation because they loved the user base and loved Playstation as a whole and allowed their great game they envisioned be loved by the biggest Japanese Console in the market at the time, and had big user base overall to maximize a great profit for Capcom. They were right, of course. They loved the Playstation more than any of the other consoles, and it easily had the biggest console base in the world, so it was critical it came out for the Playstation 2. Looking at now, they have gained interest in Xbox 360 because of its huge userbase outside of Japan, and it power; AND they had the Playstation 3 big Japanese User base and relatively okay base outside of their homeland. Looking at their relatively ok "trial" with Lost Planet for Xbox 360 that got relatively good sales and is nowhere as big or good as other Capcom titles, Devil May Cry 4 for the Xbox 360 AND the Playstation 3 is a no brainer. Plus ADD the fact there isn't no game on 360 yet that has action Devil May Cry has to offer, the game should easily sell well overall, giving Playstation 3 one of their best franchises on the console back in the past, WHILE making the game available to a new console fanbase. Looking at simple game business, it's $$$ for Capcom, and making the game even MORE popular. If they were getting exclusive money from Sony, then they wouldn't have to make Devil May Cry multiplatfrom. Looking at Next Gen Costs, plus the fact there isn't no real incentive of Devil Mary Cry 4 being only on Playstation 3, it's a NO BRAINER it should be a Multiplatformer. Either way, it's about time Capcom avoids people saying they "alienate" their games to only Japanese Brand Systems, which fairly is a true Natural Thing people shouldn't whine about because it makes perfect sense, but there's negative backlash from it as well but that's life and business in general. The Base of Xbox 360 is becoming too big to ignore anymore, (and so is the Wii, respectfully) and it's again a good move to enter their gaming library, as well as make a name for yourself in that vast, growing library. All Game Developers want to be successful in their career. Who's 7,500 people who are plain ignorant, and sadly kind of reminds me of the idiotic "Superiority" humans have done in the past, e.x.: Whites in the 60's are better than others, Because I'm came from a certain part of a country, your opinion, doesn't mean squat compared to mine, etc. It's sick how they think that a game franchise that Sony doesn't own BELONGS to them anway. How would you feel if that was your game and people were saying that you shouldn't move to other consoles as well because "They Said So?"

I think it does matter on the other hand. I think consoles need there "Exlusives" (can't remember the right word) Microsoft has there Halo, Sony has there DEVIL MAY CRY, Nintendo has there Mario. If this is then disobeyed then this can causes a mojor crack in every generation to years to come. Think (i no it wont ever happen) if Ninendo revealed Mario Galaxy was goin g to be avalible on PS3??

I admit if I would'nt of heard about DMC4 on Xbox 360 I would'nt have dreamed of getting one! But now there two games on 360 I realy want other being Halo3.

Overall I think Capcom have made a bad move......but at the end of the day Capcom have been around since 1979 so I think they no what there doing....and the petition is abit over the top.

I have almost never posted on this website but this is out of control. Why the f*** does it matter if this game goes multi-platform? They are right, PS3 users still get to play trhe game. I would post the same thing if Halo 3 went to the PS3 (teardrop...) because it just doesn't matter. I can't even believe that this has come down to some knight to king loyalty bull****. Broadening the audience that can purchase your product is intelligent entrepreneurship.

Playing a game is as simple as this

    1) you buy the game 2) you play it 3) hopefully you enjoy it

no where in your game experience does it matter if the game you buy is on another platform.

I wore down a controller to the point of it being non usable because of DMC3 and if you think you're so goddamn elitist that you have the right to tell me I don't deserve to play a game that I have been looking forward to for a couple of years, just because I chose to buy another system than you, f*** you. (I am talking about players trying to withhold it, not companies choosing the exclusivity.)

to be honest I have not read something that has been stupid enough to piss me off like this for a long time.

so it boils down to this, if the game goes multiplatform it changes nothing. You still get to play it on your PS3 or 360 or whatever the hell. Don't tell me I don't deserve to play it, and don;t tell other people they don't deserve to play.

If oyu seriously think that the game going multiplatform is this big of a deal, grow the f*** up and smell the goddamn coffee you still get the same game, and it doesn't matter who else is playing it as long as you enjoy it.

I have found this entire system war and everyone thinking that one system is better is such a crock' o 's***

You know there was a time where none of this mattered, and the N64 was never viciously defended against the Playstation. You just bought games you liked and had fun playing them. Why the hell did it pick up to be this entire life or death situation. The system wars is an immature arguement that is full of people who somehow, in someway, can't just play a game and have fun with it, they have to go off and write up how one thing is so much better than the other, and how everyone else is such a ponce for thinking otherwise.

Grow the f*** up gamespot, and grow the f**** up all the people who signed the petition. Why don;t you just buy DMC4 when it somes out, stoip treating it like a secret blood pact between Capcom and Sony, and allow each complany to do their best to be successful and reach their goals. P.S. Teardrop, the DMC series is so amazing because capcom put together a team that was able to create one of the most visceral, innovative, and intersting series around. They didn't just pop a cd into the PS2 and magic made the f***in disc come out as DMC.

Personally I support Capcom's decision to go multiplatform with this game. It's better for business and it'll allow fans who can't, or don't want to, get a PS3 to still be able to play the game. (Actually it was this game that was the only reason I was going to get a PS3.) Besides, isn't it better that we're getting the game period instead of not at all?

But you don't see Bungie throwing Halo 3 on PS3 to broaden it's fanbase
    WTF?! No loyalty whatsoever
Sony made a major contribution in making the DMC series what it is today, and this is how Capcom repay them?
Alot of Xbots say "what's the big deal, it's still releasing on PS3," but they'd have heart attacks if Bungie announced that Halo 3 is going multiplatform( I know damn well that I'm right abt that )

This is ridiculous... If its still coming to the PS3 they should have no worries!!! Its not like there putting it on the 360 and nothing else! Stuff like this should only happen if something major happens like Nintendo taking major exclusives off 360 and PS3. Then people should be outraged! Personally I'd be thrilled.
