Capcom responds to fans' rage

Exec makes statement on the official forums after PS3 fans send petition slamming the decision to take Devil May Cry 4 multiplatform.

Last week, Capcom joined the latest in a string of announcements from various companies when it said that one of its upcoming games, Devil May Cry 4, would now be going multiplatform.

Devil May Cry 4 is set to be the latest in a growing list of games which will be appearing on both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, after being previously slated as format-exclusive to one or the other.

The result of its announcement may well have taken Capcom by surprise. PlayStation fans chose to hit out at the Osaka, Japan-based company, which has produced such games as Okami, Viewtiful Joe, and the Resident Evil and Breath of Fire franchises. The fans even went as far as setting up an online petition, stating that "the undersigned" would boycott Capcom's products unless it reversed its decision and kept the game exclusive to the PS3.

In response to a thread on the official Capcom forums titled "What are you thinking, Capcom?" the company's senior director of strategic planning and research, Christian Svensson, said, "We are certainly moved that people are so passionate about our products that they would go to such extremes."

He continued, "At the same time we feel that allowing more people access to our content pleases far more people than it displeases (after all, we're not denying DMC4 to anyone that was already going to get it). It really is the best decision for the company and for consumers." He later locked the thread, stating that it had "run its course, gone off course, rolled down a cliff, hit a cow, and then exploded."

The full petition, available on the Petition Online Web site, reads, "To: Capcom, We (The people that have signed this petition) feel very left out in your decision to make Devil May Cry 4 a Multi-Platform title, and hereby agree to boycott your sale of Capcom affiliated games. This is due to your decision to turn your back on your most faithful gaming company. For years we have enjoyed games, we have reaped the benefits of your committment [sic] to Sony. We find it absolutely demoralizing for not only the gamers, but also Sony itself. We want you to know that will not, and should not stand for your actions, and therefore withold [sic] our option of buying your product."

The petition had, as of press time, received a total of more than 7,500 signatures. Though with samples including, "This petition is retarded," "This is the stupidest thing I've ever seen," and "I got a big ****," it's hard to gauge how accurate a judge of outrage it is.
