Mythos detailed, will be free

MMORPG from Flagship's Seattle studio will be free to download, free to play; engine based on technology powering Hellgate: London's multiplayer.

Gamers on a budget who want to get their massively multiplayer online role-playing game fix will have another option later this year with Mythos. The MMORPG is being developed by Flagship Studios Seattle, the Pacific Northwest outpost of San Francisco-based Flagship Studios that was established in late 2006.

For the aforementioned cash-strapped gamers, Mythos will be free to download and free to play. Flagship has not mentioned how it will make revenue off the game, but seeing as how Mythos is essentially a test of the multiplayer technology of its other game--Hellgate: London--profits may not come from gamers.

The game is set in the land of Uld, where players choose between three races--Humans, Elves, Gremlins--and explore. The game will have a familiar feel to the dungeon crawler Diablo, which is fitting as many members of Flagship previously worked on the classic series. Most of the dungeons will be instanced, meaning that they will be randomized to give each party a unique adventure.

Mythos will be available only through digital distribution, and will be released in North America by PingO in 2007.

Gameplay looks promising but im concerned about lag in-game, since the gameplay footage is prolly filmed in a lan game or singleplayer game. and most free mmorpg has crappy servers which ruins the gameplay. Guild Wars for example has just barely good enough servers. If you look at like a game like WoW you see how awsome multiplayer coding and servers the game has. I think if WoW didnt have p2p it would be as laggy as any other free per month mmorpg. It would be a lot more nice if they made players host the servers instead of having laggy realms. Still gonna play it tho i think.

In-game ads would suck for this kind of game. I don't think they'd do that though.

Hmm I don't think I'd really mind in-game ads.. depends how far they take it though I guess

You probably will have to buy something like in most MMORPG's which are 'free' . But there are some games that are totally free.

Of course it will have in game advertising and you will have to buy powerfull gear (or even characters) like any other free MMO game that exist: Silk Road, Gunbound, Bots, Navy Field, etc. I have a questions about the modern engine how it will work online and about the story.

Uh, Guild Wars is free? No, still costs about $30. I just checked...

If this is better than Silkroad Online(my current free MMORPG of choice) then I'll go for it. I wouldn't be surprised if the company announced that there would be ads in the game since it is free.

Sounds like they plan to license the game engine to other developers once this game is up and running. This game will be a kind of demo to show off the engine.

A free to download free and free to play MMORPG? That's always good. Hopefully it will be good, from the way the way it's described in the article it could end up being very cool, especially for a free game. It sounds like it could actually cost money and have a monthly fee and people would buy it, but it's free. Yay!

ehh, I don't know. My expectations are pretty low for this. The market is already flooded with bad MMOs. This is going to have to bring at least one new or improved aspect for it to be even considered...even if its free. Guild Wars is free and even though I'm not a huge fan, I recognize a good game when I see it...

thats cool of them. Id probably interested in purchasing if the game offers some good gameplay value and some intersting features. i used to love diablo, i broke many nights playing diablo and if this is any way similar i willprobably be doing the same. too early right now probably to judge, but worth looking into at least for the time being see where it goes. flaship studios is a pretty good company.

Mythos is most likely going to be free in every way so Flagship doesnt discourage people not to get it. It is to test Hellgate: Londons servers for when it comes out so they would want the most people possible.

  • spankmealotus

    Posted Mar 23, 2007 12:02 pm PT

There are a few people that dont seem to understand..Hellgate:London is not an MMO...this is a separate game that they are developing..which was first intended to just push the online servers and test and expand to see what they could get out of them..I dont know if it has changed more than that or not.

This is great because it will help grow the MMO market a lot by letting people have the experience that otherwise wouldn't have. Then some of those people might graduate up to a premium subscription based MMO that will most likely have a superior content cycle.

I think a free MMO will be great, just hope they can keep up with updates, and patches and etc: without actually charging some kind of fee to support it. I am all for it. Bring on the free MMO's

as far as i know, all kind of "free" MMORPGs cost much more money than the paid ones. cause those "free" game always ask you to pay for the epic items or something like that. i hope hellgate won't do the same thing.

  • Da-Chicken

    Posted Mar 22, 2007 6:55 pm PT

Hmmm....this could easily make money like the countless Korean MMORPGs out there. They'll let you spend money on their online stores to buy in-game stuff that'll give an edge over the leecher players.
