Sony: FFXIII PS3 exclusivity under discussion

Sony France executive says in interview that Square Enix's latest installment may not be exclusive to the console after all.

One more platform-exclusive title may be going multiplatform, it has been revealed. The latest news appears to be that Square Enix's latest epic role-playing game, Final Fantasy XIII, may follow other titles--including Saints Row, Assassin's Creed, and Devil May Cry 4--that have now been announced as appearing on at least one other platform as well.

Sony Computer Entertainment France president Georges Fornay dropped the bombshell in an interview with French-language newspaper Les Dernières Nouvelles d'Alsace (subscription required). He said, "The development costs of games have exploded, and it has become more difficult to have exclusives, outside of our own games. But we have for launch day [in France] 30 games, including MotorStorm, Resistance: Fall of Man, and Virtua Fighter 5. Moreover, we are expecting 200 games [for the PS3] by the end of 2007...As far as Final Fantasy XIII goes, I can tell you that the exclusivity is in discussion."

Fornay went on to say that he believed that the PS3 would be particularly successful in France, and that there had been approximately 60,000 preorders made (compared to 40,000 made for the Xbox 360, and 75,000 for the Wii). France will be getting approximately 150,000 of the 1 million consoles allocated to PAL regions.

He also answered questions about backward compatibility for the next-gen console, responding to fears that the console would not support many PS2 titles without the Emotion Engine. Fornay said, "Now, if you ask me whether this was a blow to the launch, I would say that [Sony] would have done better to be sure that the console would be completely backward compatible before announcing it. But hey, when it becomes clear what the PS3 is capable of, gamers won't really fancy playing PS2 [games] anymore..."

Square Enix had not returned calls to comment as of press time.

    I'm not buying it if it goes multiconsole, I'll just borrow it from someone. Kind of sucks, the main reason a lot of people bought a PS3 over a 360 was for Final Fantasy XIII.

    BS. Final Fantasy XIII is NOT coming to Xbox 360 it's been confirmed several times...however, games like Gears 2 aren't coming to Playstation. I bought both so I'm not worried but this isn't so bad...I'm sure a lot of Xbox owners hate Final Fantasy (or so it seems with all these fanboys saying playstation sucks).

    At this point i think all companies should merge into a big one. why make 2 consoles that have almost the exact same games?

    I'd rather it be exclusive. but it wont really bother me if it does go multiplatform. it will give 360 owners a chance to experiance an amazing game. And with the cost going up it probably will end up going multiplatform.

    @world69...Good for you, you have an 8800gts...not that I particularly cared at all what your current graphics card is or how much your parents spoil you. @PS3 fanboys please STOP rating people's messages DOWN because they ask that FF XIII be available multi-platform so they can play...you guys like the same game!! The main issue in exclusivity today is that it takes a LOT of money to develop next gen games, with a certain title being available for only one platform, that substantially reduces the amount of money that can be recovered to say nothing about profit. That's all it is folks, the all mighty dollar. Has nothing to do with "360 rules/Wii rules/PS3 rules" just simple economics. Coming from an economical standpoint on the OTHER side, I really hope it comes out on 360 because I sure as heck can't afford another console to play one game. Would hold true if it were coming out on the Wii as much as it does with coming out on PS3.

    I hope ff13 comes to the PC at least! Its not another console... so its really no competition for sony, hell it will only help square with sales. FFVII and VIII sold lots on the pc back in the day. And hell, I don't have or want a ps3, its overhyped and overrated! The PS1 was a great console, it had so many original titles and franchises! (it was the last non-portable console I ever owned.) I did recently buy a psp, and I must admit, it is a phenomenal console system, that has a pc like vibe to it with custom firmware and all the things it can do. Not to mention all the classic Final fantasy games on it and crysis core. So that has me hyped for ff13, but not enough to buy a ps3, I'd rather spend the money on a new graphics card, oh wait, I already own an 8800gts. I'll play ff13 if it comes out on pc. If not I guess I'll just have to wait til march 08 for crysis core. In the mean time I'll get my ff goodness, with ff1-2 remakes, ff tactics remake, ff Chronicles (ffIV and chrono trigger ps1 for psp) ,ff-anthology(ff5-6)ps1(on psp), ff7,8,9 (all ps1 games on psp), chrono chross, and vagrant story(other great square games, also ps1 games played on the psp!) Yeah I think that will hold me over till ff13 comes to pc, or crysis core comes out!

    Final Fantasy 13 serise is using the white engine not the UE3, the UE3 is being used to develop the last remnant, white engine was made exclusive for PS3

    I hope this does go multiplatform.....I love the Final Fantasy games and don't really want to buy a PS3 just to play FF13

    Originally intended system? That usually only works for PC - console conversions. A console is a console. The only real differences that you may see are lighting and frame rates. Lighting usually goes to PS3 and frame rates usually are higher on the 360. That's just how it is.

    "The Final fantasy series has really only been on the playstation..." I don't agree with that statement at all. For a start, the first SIX games all appeared on the nes/snes. FF7, considered to be one of the best of the series, was also mutli-platform given that it appeared on both the PS1 and the PC. FF8 and 9 also both appeared on the PC in addition to ofcourse the PS. There's really only been a couple more recent games in the series (FF10,12) which have been exlusive for sony and the playstation. Since the game (FF13) is using the UE3 engine, I don't think its entirely unimaginable that it may appear on another system (the PC for instance) as well.

    FFXIII probably won't be released on any other platform other than PS3. The Final fantasy series has really only been on the playstation with the exception of a few branch offs that were basically crap. Multi platform final fantasy is only being DISCUSSED at the moment, final fantasy will stick with playstation, no question.

    Even if it did eventually go over to 360, i'd still get a PS3 so i could play it on it's originally intended system, the game is gonna be brilliant

    I really think ff13 should be on x360. I love those games and am pissed at Sony for not making all the games from ps1 and ps2 playable on ps3. for that reason I will not buy a ps3!!!
    I love all my final fantasy games and want to continue playing them with out owing 4 systems!!!!

    It should be on the 360...some people cant afford the ps3 even with its price drop if u think of it...there is probely more 360 players than ps3 but if the game is on both consoles FF:13 sales would be huge.thats why it should be on both consoles.Square Enix...if you only put the game only on the ps3 u make me and many other people feel sad =( and...jealous

    Final Fantasy 13 IS NOW ONLY COMING OUT ON THE PS3 and will not come out on the 360.

    If final fantasy 13 comes to the xbox 360.. then HALO AND GEARS OF WAR should come to the PS3.. we buy the playstation to play these games, if we make it multi platform we let microsoft win the console war, because no one will need a PS3. exclusive games are key to sales.
    why own both systems if all the games are on both systems?
    microsoft isn't quite saving gamers money though.. the HDDVD feature of the xbox is not built in.. if you buy that feature. then its the same price of a ps3 anyway.. also, why don't I see HDDVD's anywhere?

    I'll admit it...i am one of the final fantasy and kingdom hearts fan.....so..i'll realy hope that the series will come to xbox 360 platform....it doesn't matter if the title has to come out first on ps3 version..but will delay to the 360 version as long as i can get the games....Square please listen to us...

    The series already went to the 360 with Final Fantasy XI, and that really didn't meet Square's expectations to begin with. If Thirteen is released at all for another platform, it will be close to a year after the original release on the PlayStation Three. Though, it's doubtful Square will release FFXIII with the 360 as that will go against what they were quoted on an "even playing field" when it comes to their games; Nintendo has Dragon Quest, 360 has Project Sylpheed, and PS3 will have FFXIII - And both 360 and PS3 will have Kingdom Hearts Three.

    The only platform other than PS3 that can handle FFXIII is the X360. It will be awesome if the game comes on the X360 as well - it is for Square's benefit.

    It may just be in discussion, but that stil makes a statement about the PS3. A sad, but true one. PS3 is losing all it's good games, and that was the only thing it had going for it.

    They say it may go multi platform, that doesnt mean its going to be on 360, do you remember when final fantasy VII and final fantasy VIII were ported to the PC? So far its just been assumptions, no hard evidence of whether its going to be on one or several platforms, if at all. So really this should have been put under rumor control

    well Krunkcity3000, xbox live does have to do with an offline game becuz any1 that gets xbox 360 will most likely get xbox live which means extra money which makes $ps3 = $ xbox 360

    Though, I am not a big fanboy of either Sony or Microsoft, I being a fan of Square must say that it would be much better for the populsrity as well as the sales if they go multi-platform.
    360 and PS3 are the two obvious choices.

    well the ps2 is more expensive, but if you add in the fact that you have to pay for xbox live. it pretty much equals it out (if you pay for it for let's say 4-5 years).

    what is the use that a game... A GAME... for the god of sake... move along to the ultimate level which in BLUE RAY, althought it sounds like more spaces more great effect graphic, then it will be expenses... i will stick with XBOX360 thx.... hehe

    well, i personally hope, no wait, no hope, NEED FFXIII to be on the ps3!! Why? everyone knows the ps3 is techinically more powerful, thats just common knowledge now. now u ask me, wat does that have to do with it? well, many ppl keep saying how the actual games matter more than graphics, power, etc. I agree with this full heartedly, BUT!!! that doesn't mean graphics and power dont play a role. graphics and power CAN help make a game get better. how? if FFXIII comes out on the ps3, square enix will be able to make a more graphically better game first of all, they will be able to have more realistic environments thx to PS3's 7 parallel Cell processors, AND thx to the Blu-ray disc, they will be able to make a really, REALLY big game, a huge world, detailed character models and environments etc. This ALL helps to immerse you into the world and cause the game to be better. Still not convinced? Well, let me show u an example with FF7. Now FF7 is an amazing game with an amazing story and amazing gameplay. Now imagine if the game was on the PS3, the game that was already really easy to immerse into becuz of its story is even easier to get into. If you saw an intro that not only pulled you in becuz of the story, but also becuz its just so beautiful, amazing, etc, it would get u even more willing to play the game. Just look at the limited footage we have of both FFXIII and FFXIII Versus, even with so little, it still makes us want the game so bad. The grahics, detail and amazing special effects just pull us rite in. With the PS3, Square Enix can make a game to its fullest potential. THe game could be better than it could be if it was limited to another console. I'm not saying the other consoles suck, the Xbox 360 and Wii are both AMAZING in their own way. But an amazing developper like Square Enix would be able to make a better game with the power of the PS3. Just like FF7 and FF10 wowed us on the PS and PS2 respectively, I want FF13 to do the same thing!

    I also remember reading somewhere about Square Enix wanting to make it for the PS2, but when they saw the power of the PS3, they changed their minds. I think soon, ppl will see a bigger and bigger difference of power between the PS3 and Xbox 360, as developpers get the hang of the new PS3 software, games will only look better and better. While Xbox 360 really can't get that much better. Also, having a DVD on the Xbox 360 will limit the games dramatically, while PS3 has Blu-Ray which has like 5 times more space (DVD- 4.7 GB, Blu-ray - 25 GB). I just want the best possible game for FFXIII, and PS3 is the best console of choice. Making it multiplatform will only limit it.

    please for the love of god make ff13 multi-platform. I had already accepted that I would not get to play it since there is zero chance of me buying a ps3 (unless they drop the price by about $400 some time soon). Bringing this game to either the Wii (which would be the most awesome but least likely) or the X360 would at least pave the way for the gamers to choose which console they want to play on rather than being forced to play on one because of exclusivity. but c'est la vie i suppose.

    I have to be honest with no disrespect to anyone who would want FF XIII to come to 360 cause I hope and pray microsoft get on the ball with this but i dont think i see this happen; Reason being is that Squareexix is afraid to take the final fantasy series on multisystems being that they are confortable where they are at now with the ps3. In this day and age, being that the cost and pricing for programing and devlopment of games you would think that going multiplatform would be the best thing ever and in some ways it is. And honestly if the idea of FF XIII coming to 360 is promising then i'm all for it i'll have my 360 nice and shiny for this game to come but even though square wants to do multi platform games; the Final Fantasy Franchise are their bread and butter and when it comes to that they are kinda selfish about that notiion of puting at least one of their FF games to microsoft no matter which side the creator went to, In the end, its not about favortism nor fanboyism but no matter waht is said people are going to proclaim what is better than the other...but as much as i wish the idea of this game coming and how it would look for the 360 the wish factor must be very, VERY strong to make this magic happen. but in the mean time PS3 owners can very much rejoice for this game coming soon.

    depending on upcoming console games porting could actually be extremely difficult, imaging trying to port a game like ... Lair or Warhawk ... the 360 doesnt even have motion detection and 80% of the movement for both of those is based on code for gyration ... that would be an insanely difficult port and would require totally remaking a movement system and button scheme that would fit a controller with no gyroscopes. And no it is NOT a fact in any way shape or essence or form that FF 13 is going to the 360. The closest info is from a French conference by one person ... thats totally different than saying its for sure... and FF13 HAS infact been in development since 5 months after development for FF12 started so 4-5 years is about correct ...

    Your sorta on the right track there.... but when your porting a game you dont have to remake all the models and the such. So making a port doesnt cost much, you just have to cahnge a large part of the coding, instead of completly remaking the game.

    And the game hasnt been in dev for 5-6 years. Maybe 1-2 even 3 years(but i doubt 3).

    Oh and just where did you pull this lovely piece of information from? FACT PS3 had most successful launch
    FACT RPG retails best in Far Eastern countries such as Japan
    FACT XBoX360 was a HUGE failure in that market you can try and say oh bbut GoW sold alot no it really didn't Xbox is a western console always will be.

    Because one representative of sony said it MIGHT be under descussion doesnt mean PS3 is losing it the game will boost sales insanely you can try and say oh but xbox sold more well of course it has its been out for over a year PS3 has been out for a month in Europe when the exclusives start coming Heavenly sword, Metal gear, Killzone etc etc then the sales will increase dramatically Square arent worried about the console sales they know if they release on PS3 people will buy one just for that console a few wont but they are in the minority. Not to mention Xbox is now losing exclusives (Kane and lynch) who knows what else Capcom already stated that they arent making anymore console exculsives starting with DMC4 so theres one of your biggest game developers gone.

    GoW was a lucky success and succeeded alone on its advertising campaign and tbh they made it sound like it wasnt it was fun for an hour then got horribly boring, you think they can get another game of that calibur to rival the first party games sony has on its way? I dont think so

    People are starting to realise the 360 is running to the end of its life span even Halo 3 looks insanely dated (Although its trailer shows otherwise microsoft all over tbh "make it look good in adverts then release it people will deal with it")

    Same with Xbox360 just because Microsoft sold 10 million units doesn't mean everyone is going to buy it and I'm sure most of FF fans are still with Sony so more PS3 owners will be pickin up the game than Xbox360 owners.

    If anything they already had this planned to be released on the 360 aswell they just kept quiet about it until now. They see that Sony's reputation is not what it used to be and is making it difficult for them to release it on one system when they can get twice the sales to cover the losses they will make by having it exclusive to a PS3 with the low number of consoles. Just because Sony sold 2 million units or "shipped" does not mean that everyone is going to buy it, just look at the numbers of how many copies Resistence have sold it doesn't even cover the cost of the production that the game went through. The games sell for $60 but all that don't go back to the publisher if anything they get only 50% of the $60. So don't complain if they go exclusive and can't come up with the cost of production, they might not produce anymore tittles.
