Sony: Euro PS3 delay 'beneficial'

SCEE president and CEO believes that the three-month wait will only be good for Sony in the long run.

European gamers have less than 48 hours to wait before they can get their hands on a PlayStation 3, and people have already begun to queue at the home of the official Sony event, London's Virgin Megastore.

Many Europeans, including those first in line, have expressed disappointment that the console was delayed in PAL regions. However, David Reeves, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe president and CEO, has told Reuters that he does not believe that the three-month delay of the release of the PlayStation 3 in Europe and Australasia is "disappointing."

He said in an interview, "It's not. It has been really beneficial to us. We're going to get it right."

Reeves likened the European PS3 launch to...a bubbly beverage. "It has been rather like taking a bottle of soda water and we've shaken it so hard over the last six months that when we take the cork off, it's just going to explode."

The Sony executive also slammed critics who have been questioning the popularity of the PS3 because preorders are still available for the console. Just because stores weren't yet out of stock doesn't mean that the console is not selling, Reeves said. He said the aim this time around was always to have enough stock available so the "normal shopper" who was considering buying a PS3 could easily get their hands on one at launch.

Beneficial form Sony maybe, but I fail to see how the delay could benefit me in any way.

Of course this is corporate spin, but I do agree with one point. Having a launch where systems are readily available on store shelves is a Godsend. Not everyone wants to camp out for 36 hours just for their gaming.

Do you believe this guy? I can't believe my ears. Instead of Sony admitting to their loss so far, they insist on still lying to people about the fact that it isn't selling well at all, but rather "we're just keeping up with stock" . What disrespect! Stop lying to your customers, Sony. It's not becoming of you. Fall hard, Sony. Fall hard.

Ummm.... why would sony move all their unsold units here? They already have too many on the shelves - thats why people are worried about them this time out - the system barely has any units, and many are sitting on store shelves.... it took the 360 almost a year to get units on shelves...with the PS3 they have overstocks in some places after only a few months!

Maybe Sony should move all the unsold units here stateside across the pond. I bet that'd help. I have to wonder if they believe themselves. If dellusion and arrogance would win a console war, Sony would've had this one locked up.

More of Sony's lies and deception!!!

This is the reason why Sony is now called Fony.

This is the reason why the Sony PS3 is called the Fony BS3rd.

I really do feel bad for Europeans, because Sony places such a low level of importance on them as consumers.

Don't buy a PS3. Go somewhere else, where people at least seems to have a little respect towards you.

"Yeah and the consoles will just fly off the shelfs in every store!!!...."

Yeah, you have to remember Sony lies ALOT... Just like when the one guy said in a response to the comments of the PS3s not selling.. "You can walk into any store, and I will pay you (I think was 1000.00 US) if you can find one in stock" ... They act as if they are selling left and right, when in all reality they are collecting dust.

Isn't that what they described would happen with the US/Japan launches? It's been months later and the only thing Sony Fanboys can look to is Resistance....If Sony doesn't want to go the way Sega did they better start launching better games.

I thought the whole point of this Emotion Engine was because it would make the PS3 a bit cheaper, though they haven't lowered the price at all. Was that just bull or are they planning to lower this at a later date?

To get it right for the "normal shopper" they should have kept the 20GB model for Aussies/Euro - at $820 it was actually not too bad, but $1000, that just looks scary. I will be getting a PS3, but in around a year, when some great games are out (and hopefully a nice price drop too).

hey sony haters, you guys are complaining way to early. wait till sony goes down then you can say "I told you so", but till then hold your unforeseeable predictions. because people said that the nintendo wii was going to be dominated by the 360 and ps3, and it seems like its doing better than both consoles. just an advice. because we don't know the future there no point in bashing another consoles.....if you are a true gamer, just appreciate what the gaming industry has to offer.

Yeah... the Euro PS3 delay has been "beneficial" because it has given people more time to come to their senses and buy a 360 instead...

Now before the flaming begin's from the Sony fanboy's, let me clearly state that I used to be a loyal Playstation customer.

I don't dislike the PS3, I just resent being forced into buying **** i don't need. Unless you plan to buy and watch HD movies, the Blu Ray drive is relatively useless. If the 360 can run games as intense as GRAW2 or Gears of War on DVD's, all that extra storage space that you are awarded with Blu Ray goes to waste anyway..

People need to understand that Sony are effectively using PS3 as a trojan horse for ensuring that Blu Ray wins the format war against HD DVD. At least Microsoft gave their customers the opportunity to choose whether they wanted a HD movie player or not.

Buying a PS3 on launch is a total no brainer because games developers havent even begun to unlock the full potential of the technology that you're paying for yet. The launch games arent anything special either... Motorstorm and Resistance being the only exclusive titles that really appeal to me. Most big games are going multiplatform these days anyway because developers want to maxmise their profits and minimise risk.

So i honestly ask you... if the 360 does pretty much the same job graphically as the PS3, is considerably cheaper, has a wider selection of games, and has a way better online service.... why would anyone be foolish enough to buy a PS3 on launch?

    Just a thought....

And to the guy who said that FFXIII along will allow Sony to command a high price, you must be out of your God-damn mind to think that one game...let alone not a good one, will command $600-$1000 for a system. The hell with that. I'm not even remotely looking at a PS3 until the high end drops to $400, and even then, there better be a hell of a line up.

lol. I've shed tears reading this sh#t. Sony has again, so shamelessly and ever so bluntly lied to our faces once again. Those di*kless b@$tards claims its ' beneficial' and 'We're going to get it right'. ROFL! Yeah right! They delay the release for half a year, then take away the emotion chip and totally fuk up the backwards compatiblity (ps3 can't even play half the ps2 games out there) then yank up the price and sell it to us for $300 NZ dollars more then the americans. 6 months wait, crappier ps3 but $300 more expensive price... then they say its 'beneficial' and that they're going to do it right? I hope that cork will explode in sony fu$king snobby as face and break their arrogant non rependant head in pieces. f*%k sony.

One of the main things I've been wondering about, since there are different parts missing from the European to the Japanese versions, will the patches match properly? Sure the Emotion chip is only one thing, but a large number of bugs can occur when there's something essential is missing from the original version which the patch was designed for. Essentially I believe they're going to have to resort to working on two different patches in the future one for the Japanese/US version, the other European/Australian/etc., which will mean delays, may be short or long delays in producing the new patches. We'll have to wait and see if they're compatible to find out.

Well the good new is that you will all get a console now, and there shoudlnt be any shortages. Us americans and japanese got the first batches and hence the most bugs. All those bugs are now worked out and you are getting a more stable console with no rushed production. Does it kinda suck there no EMO......yes, but we here in the states are getting that same fate with future consoles. Just be happy they decided to release it in your area.
