Namco Bandai to deal Culdcept Saga this summer

Xbox 360 to get its first taste of Monopoly-meets-Magic: The Gathering strategy title in coming months.

A North American release for Namco Bandai Games' strategy game Culdcept Saga for the Xbox 360 has been confirmed for some time, but before today, a release window for the game had not been nailed down.

Namco Bandai Games America today announced that it will publish Culdcept Saga domestically this summer. The Xbox 360 edition of the game will include four-player multiplayer action offline or over Xbox Live.

By combining elements of the board game Monopoly with the customizable card game Magic: The Gathering, Culdcept borrows principals of both games. Players are dealt cards that can be used to accomplish tasks like casting spells or summon monsters. They claim territory by dropping monsters onto the board, which will then collect "rent" from any rivals unfortunate enough to land on that territory (provided that rival doesn't have a nastier monster in his own hand). Win or lose, players earn more cards that they can then use to customize their decks for future battles.

Culdcept Saga marks the second installment of the Japanese series to reach US shores; it first appeared here when NEC Interchannel published Culdcept for the PlayStation 2 in 2003. For more on that game, check out GameSpot's review.

    Demo Available in US market from "Official XBOX Magazine."
    Playing it now! It isn't very good on graphics, but I like it.
    Holiday 2007 Disk #78. Picked it up at a major bookstore for $9.99.
    Also has some other titles.

    And this is one of the main reasons why.

    I play this game all the time with my Brother and Sister. I cant wait!
    I just hope they improve the story mode...

    I also really enjoyed the PS2 version. I cant wait to see what its like on a next gen console.

    I'll have to give this a try. The quality of this game will hinge on presentation - if they nail the presentation I think it will be a blast.

    Anyone hoping not to throw out their PS2 games when they buy a shiny new PS3 in Europe will be in for a shock, according to research carried out by a German website. The people at Cynamite found that out of 12 of the best selling console games for the PS2, only one would work on the PS3. The European version of the console will not feature a special "Emotion" chip (that's in the American and Japanese versions of the console). This chip will offer games a significantly high degree of compatibility with the legacy games.

    The website managed to get hold of one of the European consoles prior to its launch on the 23rd March and tested the following games. God of War MGS 2: Sons of Liberty MGS 3: Snake Eater Shadow of the Colossus Guitar Hero 2 Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones Okami GTA: Liberty City Stories Eragon Final Fantasy X-2 Ratchet & Clank 3 Lumines Plus The site found that only one game, Eragon, started up correct. The others refused to play and told users to wait for updates to the software that emulates the old console.

    One gamer wrote on a forum that they were furious with the decision to go for a cheaper solution that could leave them with console games no better than expensive paperweights. "Here we go again. Time to rip off Europe. I just hope that most kids and their parents don't fall for this blatant extortion on the part of Sony and stick with their PS2s or go Xbox unless Sony offer the same features for Europe as the US," one said. But Sony's Phil Harrison told the media that his company has a strategy in place. He told games industry mag gamesindustry.biz that the company is still working to ensure that every PS2 and PSone game is compatible with the new console and that strategy had not changed. "We have made a technical change to the machine which moves us from being a hardware-embedded backwards compatibility solution to one which is a combination of hardware and software," said Harrison.

    Cant wait, I just hope there's a decent story-driven single player component as well. The manga is pretty good.

    LOL evil_ka where you been, still stuck in last generation? of course the 360 has other than first person shooters! In fact it has more games than the PS3. Look on this very site (games current and futer 360 has 406, and ps3 has 241) yeah they both have more unannounced games but 360s is increasing faster than ps3's and the 360 does not have ghost titles bs. The ps3 has 21 rpgs listed and the 360 has 28 rpgs listed. With the aready announced concentration of even more rpgs announced by Microsoft LOOK OUT! I thought you knew?! This is old news go to any multi platform and see the new order of things! in short you dont know what your talking about.

    I loved the PS2 version, and I can't wait to get this one. This game was one of the reasons that I got a 360.

    O.O you mean, a game that is not in FP view and does not require you to shoot a gun, is coming to the 360! Thank goodness, the PS2 Culdcept was surprisingly good and I am glad to see them working on a sequel.

    I really hope they announce this for PS3, my wife and I both really enjoyed it on PS2 and I don't want to buy a 360. Get on the ball, Sony!!!

    Culdcept is one of the best games for the Ps2 I'm even more excited that it's coming out on the 360 with online play.

    Wow. It's an Xbox exclusive. I just read the review & it seems pretty interesting. I hope it doesn't have any associated costs with buying new cards all the time. Having said that, I'm surprised that Wizards has not made an MTG game for the Xbox 360 yet. This game looks like it could be a real time sink as a turn-based game. I really hope it succeeds though. It seems promising.

    I've heard that the Japanese version of this game is terribly broken and crashes all the time, so I hope they've fixed it.
