The Force (will be) Unleashed in November

[UPDATE] LucasArts makes it official with Web destination dating, detailing new Star Wars game, which casts players as Darth Vader's apprentice; DS, PS2, and PSP versions also planned.

Hot on the heels of yesterday's revelation about the new title, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, comes official confirmation of its existence. This morning, LucasArts launched the official Web site for the game and also announced its ship window--November 2007.

Concept art (pictured) on the site also confirmed that the leaked tech-demo footage is indeed for the new Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 title. It also described the technology behind its eye-catching physics. "The Force Unleashed...[takes] full advantage of newly developed technologies that will be seen and experienced for the first time: Digital Molecular Matter (DMM), by Pixelux Entertainment, and Euphoria by NaturalMotion...paired with the powerful Havok Physics system."

Apparently DMM is the middleware responsible for the particle effects in the tech demo, Euphoria enabled the Stormtroopers' natural-seeming AI, and the widely used Havok system allowed the Force-flung Stormtroopers to bounce realistically. The game's tech will also be used to render players' four core Force powers: Force push, repulse, grip, and lightning. These will, as evidenced in LucasArts' tech demo, allow players to fling enemies through the air--and walls. Force powers will also make opponents literally explode with combo moves.

LucasArts' Web site also further details the storyline of the game, which was developed and supervised by George Lucas himself. As previously mentioned, the game will be set between Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope. Players will assume the role of Darth Vader's apprentice, who is tasked with hunting down the remaining Jedi Knights. Part of it will be set on a planet called Felucia, which is inhabited by a "force sensitive" race, which players will square off against.

The Force Unleashed site also hinted that the game's story may contain the sort of branching storyline featured in the two Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic games. Throughout the game, players will "face decisions that could change the course of their destiny."

[UPDATE] Later in the day, LucasArts updated The Force Unleashed site with platform information--revealed the game is also headed to the DS, PlayStation 2, and PlayStation Portable.

Not on the PC? Not bothering with it. I would love to have it but without being able to use mods or patch the bugs it might have, It really isn't worth it. If it didn't cost the normal 50-60 bucks then yeah Ill buy it. otherwise no. PC rules games, no question.

WTF I don't own a Wii and even if I did I would buy this for PS3/360 but NOT releasing this on the Wii is just plain stupid! It really makes me worry that the devs are being lazy and don't want to incorperate the new features a Wii version would require, I mean this game is tailor made for the Wii!

The PS2 version is going to be poor.

they should have one on the wii, ps2 is of the past generation and has the same type of graphics of the wii so why not

SWEEET GAME !! MAN NEVER UNDERESTIMATE THE POWER OF THE PS2 , plus if it was on the wii it would be sooo hard to play and so complex and secondly it wouldn't be any fun jumping arround like an idiot with u'r wiii controller SO still ps2 ROCKS !

This is gonna be a helluva game. I mean, check out the leaked footage! Being able to smash stormtroopers against the wall and his teammates before blasting them all over the cliff would be sweet as.....

One question, if it was on the Wii, wouldn't it be very difficult? I mean, one hand would only be for saber movement. That means your character movement and the direction you face would all have to be mapped to that controller that just an analog stick.

Can the Wii sense when your wii-mote is behind you? LIke if I pointed it backwards, would it know that i'm doing a backwards saber thrust at the guy behind me? If it can sense not just were the wiimote is, but where the player is in relationship to the wii mote and the direction of both, I think it could work out well. If it can't do that though, the controls are gonna be very diffeicut for a 3rd person game that often has enemies coming at you from all angles. I'td be cool if they had like a device you could strap on your head (could be small) to let it know what direction your head is facing. You could use that to control the game camera and eliminate alot of the things I see as issues.

Not bashing the Wii or anything cuz when I first heard about it, i immediately thought light saber combat. But you think about how the controls would have to be... i'm not sure its possible in a way that neither overly simplistic or insanely complex.

    --
I don't know if these are screenshots, but imo it'd kick arse if the actual game had that oil painting look to it.

Why are lucasarts turning their back on the platform with which gave them their basing in gaming, the PC. It seems just......depressing that such a great SW game won't be available for a platform which could realise the games potential so much better than any console would. I hope they at least make a JK4 or KOTOR3 for the PC to make up for it.

I REALLY hope they put a lot of emphasis on saber combat (even more so than Jedi Academy) and allow for you to train in the different Forms..would be soooo awesome to train in Vaapad or some of the other Forms..with the new gen of consoles a lot could be done with motion and animation

No wii one. Star Wars fans know they want to use the controller as a light saber.

  • Juno2_17

    Posted Feb 18, 2007 3:16 pm GMT

I still have not found anything talking about lightsaber combat.
They have to work on that too. It's not like we are gonna use the force in a jedi duel every three seconds. Don't get me wrong, this is all awesome, but if lightsaber combat totally sucks, what then? We need some answers Lucasarts!

this game has the potential to be amazing, with all the new technology, and simply because it's a Star Wars game, I'll definitely keep an eye on it.

The Wii isn't getting a piece of this action? The Wii remote as a light saber seems almost too natural...

bringing the game out on Nintendo DS and PSP will probably ruin the initial idea of the game. Look at Lethal Alliance and the potential it could have had on 360...
