Kane & Lynch headed to Hollywood

Variety reports that Eidos has sold the rights to its forthcoming shooter to indie studio Lionsgate.

Kane & Lynch

These dead men will apparently be in a live-action film.

"Cinematic." That's the word that came to many gamers' minds when they watched the trailer for Kane & Lynch: Dead Men. The 43-second preview's visual style is positively Michael Mann-ish, with a Collateral-esque nightclub shootout and a Heat-like crew of overall-clad armed robbers.

Given Kane & Lynch's penchant for cinematic homage, it comes as little surprise, then, to learn that it is being turned into a feature film. This week, Variety reported that Vancouver-based studio Lionsgate has scooped up the movie rights to the squad-based action title, which is being developed by Io Interactive (Freedom Fighters). The PC and Xbox 360 game is currently due sometime later this year--GameSpot's previous coverage has more details.

According to the trade, Adrian Askarieh and Daniel Alter will produce the Kane & Lynch film. If those names sound familiar, it's because they are also reportedly producing the stalled movie based on another Io/Eidos franchise, Hitman. Askarieh is also producing Universal's Spy Hunter film, starring the Rock, which is stuck in development limbo as well.

wow. the game isn't even out yet. lol. they better not screw this up, even though you really can't. the game appears quite linear; HAS A SCRIPT ALREADY WRITTEN*cough*cough*. I will have a hard time believing bad reviews, because the script, as i coughed, was already written.

for movies it doesnt really matter how gameplay is. games that are going to be made into movies depend on the storyline.Hitman has a pretty good storyline and can be made into a movie.

as for Kane & Lynch, both the game and the movie Sounds awesome just based on the storyline.

Lol, so guess what will happen to Kane&Lynch aswell? You got it, development limbo. Seriously, when you've already got two (count 'em, TWO) stalled movies in your hands, maybe you should actually try to get something done before going out and getting rights for even more films.

The odd thing is, this game is not even released yet so how do we know whether this game will be good or not? If the game turns out to be bad, won't making a movie out it be pointless?

Hollywood that desperate their buying out movie rights from games that haven't been released yet?

Can't say they'll screw this one up, but I'm looking forward to the game, considering the comparisons to some of Michael Mann's best films.

Why does nearly every game get turned into a movie now? The thing is, there are always plans, then the movie never comes out, or when it does, its a pile of ****. Just stop with the game movies already!!

this game isnt even out yet and its got a movie deal?!?!? what if the game sucks? So we can't even get a Metroid movie or a Halo movie, but we can get a movie for a game that hasnt even been released. hhmmm. ok. and uwe boll can continue to ruin franchise after franchise. we can get turds like the super mario movie and street fighter (although in a campy cheesy way, i kinda liked em).
when are we ever gonna get a movie - a GOOD movie, based on a game?!?!? wtf is wrong with this picture?!?!?

ronin_aries that's what they said about comic book movies. I just hope they start doing good movies soon. Adrian Askarieh and Daniel Alter need to get some work done. Hopefully one of these will be worth while.

A little early to be snatching up film rights, don't you think? It hasn't even come out, let alone proved to be popular enough to make money as a movie. Don't get me wrong-I love the Hitman games and hope that this one turns out to be just as good in its own way. But should they really make a movie out of a game if it's not a strong, proven franchise (speaking of, I eagerly await the Metal Gear movie...)?

it looked like a tony scott movie more than a micheal mann movie. and after doing miami vice, i would rather mann not direct it.

    Posted Feb 13, 2007 3:26 pm PT

Not another movie off of a game...People in the movie industry should try to be more original. They should make movies out of only the best games. This game doesn't sound like a game that would fit well as a movie.

  • aus_pride

    Posted Feb 13, 2007 3:24 pm PT

Ok so now all we need is michael man to direct the movie and all will be fine and dandy!

It wasn't cluttered nor anti-climatic if you're familiar with the background to the games. I suppose as a completely un-initiated member of the audience it got pretty vague though.

I thought it struck a nice balance between including newcomers and not dumbing the thing down - keeping true to its surreal and suggestive roots.

Silent Hill was "alright". Its story was cluttered and the ending was anti-climatic.

Does it really matter if the game is gonna be good or not, unless you guys have been living in an alered universe, there has NEVER been a good gaming movie, NEVER and there probably will never be...EVER!!!
