Rewards coming for Gamerscores, offer extended

[UPDATE] Microsoft challenges gamers to increase their Gamerscores by 1,500 points in 63 days for prizes, including games. Competition now lasts until April 15.

Late last month, rumors about an achievements-for-rewards program sprang up, postulating that Microsoft and an unnamed sponsor would team up to give out prizes based on the Xbox 360's achievement system. Today, Microsoft copped to the plan and unveiled the program's sponsor by announcing the Old Spice Experience Challenge.

Beginning February 12, US gamers over the age of 13 can register at the Rewards Challenge Web site (note: site not live as of press time) and attempt to increase their Gamerscores by 1,500 points before April 12. The contest is limited to a first-come, first-served basis, and there will be a total of $500,000 in prizes to be given out.

The prize selection benefits those who are already "achievement point whores," as the greatest prize package will be given to those who already have a solid Gamerscore foundation.

Level 1 (registrants with a Gamerscore of less than 5,000)
Prizes for completing challenge: A special gamer picture, Xbox 360 dashboard theme, and the Xbox Live Arcade game Contra.

Level 2 (registrants with a Gamerscore between 5,000 and 9,999)
Prizes for completing challenge: A special gamer picture, Xbox 360 dashboard theme, the Xbox Live Arcade game Contra, 100 Microsoft Points (worth $1.25), and a contest T-shirt.

Level 3 (registrants with a Gamerscore of 10,000 and over)
Prizes for completing challenge: A special gamer picture, Xbox 360 dashboard theme, the Xbox Live Arcade game Contra, 200 Microsoft Points (worth $2.50), a contest T-shirt, and a copy of Fuzion Frenzy 2.

Microsoft plans to expand the challenge to a global level in the future.

[UPDATE] Server crashes have prevented anxious gamers from registering for the event, but Microsoft is working on the problem. In addition, the competition has been extended to April 15 and more rewards have been added to the prize pool. Microsoft believes the problem will be fixed within the next day or so, and recommends that gamers "check back periodically." As of the morning of February 14, GameSpot editors attempting to get on the registration site were still seeing an error message.

How much are the prizes worth??? You got to play so many games even if you rent them to collect all those points... Is it really worth it?

50 dollars is a pretty good reward to me. Why complain? Probably because losers complain and winners take home the girl.

epormada.. true say, it could be a typo. However, it might not be. It is the easiest 1000 out there.. rent the game, get the 1000 points in like 4 hrs and then you will be much closer to what you need.

Besides, Fuzion Frenzy 2 does not come with the level 1 and 2 prizes so.

That's right, the contest should of at least been extended to Canada. Get the program rolling faster, and beat out Sony & Nintendo.

Let's keep the points fair though, and not just for hard core gaming junkies, make the points reachable for us occasional players.

Here's an even better proposition...how about some MICROSOFT POINTS for my 7000 Gamerscore points? I beleive I would deserve getting some free Xbox Live junk for getting the "Seriously" acheivement on Gears of War...dontcha think? I'd say...500 points for every 2000????? THAT'S FAIR!!!??

Gamespots new poll question on their home page asks what people think about the rewards for achievement points program, and as of Feb. 19 six-thousand five-hundred people (28%) chose "I'm not playing Fuzion Frenzy 2 for some stupid prizes". Which must be a typo by gamespot cause Fuzion Frenzy 2 is one of the prizes not a game you have to play to win. 6,500 haters just picking the worst option and don't even know what their talking about!
    EXPOSED!!!

everyone go out and beat king kong and fight night or even CoD 2 cuz u get 1000 gamerscore and all u have to do is beat the game no real challenges

I love when people complain about something they dont have to do or pay for. Yes they pay for a game but you are stupid to buy a game that sucks just to get points. Reminds me of all those who complain about their job and once its really gone they noticed what they had.

EDIT: Right now its in the USA because of sponsership agreements. If others will make terms to sponsor I'm sure of it that Microsoft would take the offer as Its helping sales of games at the same time costing them nothing.

bah why so complacent? they are rewarding folks, something that other consoles havent done period. gam3r3OOO, 200+ gaming doesnt even come close to 1500gp stop ur griping. at the very very least you get contra, i mean how terrible is it that all you have to do to get a free game (or games if ur level 3) is to beat other games?? stop it now. to all the gamers in other countries, it will be rolled out to you guys to but you do have a valid point.

This is stupid. The prizes stink even for achievement hogs. It punishes people who have a life beyond playing Xbox 360 games all day to get achievements. The prizes should be equal for all that try to gain 1,500 points or more in the time given. If it worked that way and better prizes were up for grabs, it would be a good idea and I would have registered for it. I think this is like a good game with bugs; when they fix it then it could be something great. Nice idea, bad way of doing it.

How about some cheats (health, weapons, anything) for games instead? Oh wait, Microsoft wouldn't a ton of money from Xbox Live that way... what was I thinking?!?

  • xboxrulze

    Posted Feb 19, 2007 11:49 am PT

You would think they'd try this in all the countries that have xbox live...

  • need_id07

    Posted Feb 19, 2007 9:28 am PT

LoL you do realize if they gave really good rewards of stuff you would buy, e.g. gears fo war or w/e then they would lose money? The point of this contest if for people to buys games they wouldn't normaly buy to get 1500 points. If they gave away a really good game then they wouldn't be makeing as much money.

Jesus. I thought all the "sh*t prize" comments were harsh until I actually looked at the prizes... Seems theyre right!

Still its a nice concept, and Xbox Live is amazing anyway!

With regards to Europe getting shafted (Im from England... sorry, "the UK" - which is not actually a country by the way) as usual, at least Microsoft are promising to extend it in the future, so were not getting it as badly as Sony give it (the PSone is launching here in a couple of days time, for £800).

Thing is though, not all achievement points are equal by any means! Eg on GRAW you get something like 32 points for coming top in the world, whereas in Pro Evo 6 (a football game, sorry "SOCCER") you get 40Gs for winning any of the leagues or cups ON ANY DIFFICULTY!!! WHAT! Its pathetically easy on th easiest difficulty! The computer dont move!

Who wants a free copy of Fuzion Frenzy after playing 200+ hours of games? I could make better money with a real job. I thought the prizes should be a bit more substantial like: you get to eat lunch with Bill Gates or you get another Xbox 360 or you get a lifetime supply of Xbox Live.

I think it's amazing that the article says it will extend the rewards to "a global level" in the future and people from Europe who can't read are still complaining, despite all the gamers who are putting down friendly reminders.
