Supreme Commander demo out now

Playable demo for Gas Powered Games' and THQ's massive strategy game ready for download now from GameSpot. Exclusive details inside.

Publisher THQ has released the playable demo for Supreme Commander, the highly anticipated PC strategy game from developer Gas Powered Games. The demo, now available for download from GameSpot, includes an early portion of the single-player campaign for the Cybran Nation, one of the game's three playable factions. It also includes a skirmish map named "Finn's Revenge," which can be played on easy, medium, and hard difficulty levels.

According to the in-game fiction, the Cybran Nation consists of a race of cybernetically enhanced humans known as "symbionts" that seek their freedom from the oppressive human regime of future Earth, which is controlled by the aggressive United Earth Federation, a faction that has enslaved the symbionts for fear of rebellion. Meanwhile, the UEF and Cybran Nation will need to contend with the game's third faction, the Aeon Illuminate, a mysterious group heavily influenced by alien philosophy and technology that claims pacifism, but backs its claims with military might.

While Supreme Commander is an original intellectual property created at Gas Powered Games, the game is ostensibly a successor to the 1997 real-time strategy classic Total Annihilation, which was designed by GPG's frontman, industry veteran Chris Taylor. The game is scheduled for release on February 20. For more information on the game, consult GameSpot's preview coverage.

I've just run my virus checker and it says there is a Trojan horse Generic6.UMS virus in the setup.exe from this demo - I downloaded it from gamespot a few months back Anybody else have the same problem? The virus was found in:
    C:\Documents and Settings\MYUSER\Local Settings\Temp\Temporary Directory 1 for supremecommanderdemo.zip\setup.exe

I am going to get some well deserved sleep, and when i am back, i expect to see some help on the demo right here. Thank you very much for dealing with my rant. The computer is looking very much battered now.
    Good night.
PS-Though i may sleep, grandfather nurgle does not. Watch yourselves out there, foolish mortals, and sleep tight.

A wise man once said "never trust a computer you cannot thow out the window"
I got up at 5 this morning to walk the dog after having a mere 3 hours sleep having finally fallen into the land of nod after playing as NOD for several hours. I then had work, no food till 3pm, walk the dog again, take my little bro to play footy and stand there bored stiff for an hour and a half and then when i get home i spend hours waiting for this demo to download. I cannot throw my computer out the window (the window is to small) but i can certainly throw my rattle out of the pram, which i duly did. And now i want my rattle back, thank you very much.
Please give me some help. All the system requirements are met, but it says they aren't. Windows XP V2002, service pack 2, 1.99Gig, 256Mb of RAM, direct x 9, g-force 5. WHAT IS WRONG?! I AM SO CLOSE TO A BF I AM GROWING A TALE AND LOTS OF FUR!

EXCELLENT! only down is AI in scrimish event at HARD i still kick him to space he look low in strategie (sending Experimental unit alone), cant wait for multiplay.

Test on: p4 3.0, 2gig ram, 9800 allinwonders, in somewhat lag in huge battle at speed +0 (near all low setting)

I for one am very excited by this game. It makes logistics a key part of planning an attack, an element missing in many RTS'.

I also support the idea of future-proofing a game, there are old games I play to this day and it is always great to be able to play at resolutions I couldn't when I bought them.

Essentially I see this game as putting a significant new concept into RTS: that of scale and as a result, the developers should be lauded for trying to break out of the mould that current RTS' are setting.

Will it need tweaking after its released: yes, because significant innovation brings new unforeseen problems that cannot be discerned until the world gets to put it under the most intense scrutiny.

I am extremely happy that they released a demo before I bought the game. As an old fan of the original TA most of the game mechanics were familiar and I was hoping for more of the same updated for 2007, I was dissapointed. The graphics are indeed superb when zoomed in, it's a great pity then that you hardly get to see them because to play the game with any worthwhile overview of what's going on it is necessary to have the window zoomed out. Instead of the glorious graphics then you are reduced to moving squares of colour. Winning the game is simple when playing against the AI, turrets are now so powerful that you just need to build them closer and closer to the enemy until you control the field, no need for any other units if you do not wish them as the standard defensive installations will win the game for you. This of course does prevent the zerg rush seen in most RTS games but it also makes all other units redundant, including the aircraft.

The developers have also fallen in line with most of the industry in attempting to make the game future proofed in that to enjoy everything whacked up to full you need to wait about a year and upgrade your PC with the technology available at that time. I have never seen the point of this and wish that devs would make games for the present. In 12 months I would be bored with it and on to something else anyway so no point at all.

I have played through the entire demo and won every scenario, TA it isn't.

Better to get 8series cause it supports shader model 4.0 as well as dx10... btw, my com specs are E6600 @ 3.6ghz, EVGA 680i, 2gb corsair 6400doms, 8800gtx @ 676/900, 320gb seagate hdd.... and also, so far even in huge skirmish battles, i did not experience any lag with settings on max.... but mabe in battle of over 1kunits may have to reduce the anti-alising from 8x to mabe 0 or 2x...

The demo was good but it had some serious bugs in the campaign mode.my pc crashed and the sound from the game was stuttering in desktop mode so i had to shut it down manually, but not in skirmish mode there it was stable.

    PC: Intel Core 2 Duo E6600,2gb ram,Asus PN5-E SLI Nvidia 650i,Nvidia Pov 7900GS 256 mb 320 gb seagate Harddrive 16mb cache.

luengoalvareza:it is not possible to upgrade the shader model on graphic cards because it must support this shader model in hardware, you must buy a new one with support for shader model 2.0 or 3.0.i suggest a 7600gs for budget if you have agp port,or if you got pci express port a 7900gs/ 7950gt or if you can afford it 8800gt,gtx.

This game is EPIC. It made me feel that all other strategy games are smail and insignificant. I guess people don't like it is that it is TOO BIG for them. For me, I love it. All other games are just repetative and just dumb. Unfortunately, most gamers are exactly like that. For example, WHO IN THE WORLD would play Counter-Strike constantly. I find that game super boring. And World Of Warcraft isn't super special. Great but not special.

All Chris Taylor have to do is make a few tweaks in performance issues and this game will be SUPREME.

I will buy SUPREME COMMANDER when it comes out.

This is simply amazing. The interface is pretty tough and it takes a while to master, but once you do, playing it becomes easy. Everything is just so natural, and actual strategy is needed. This is all I hoped for.

Well Calinescu....the grafics are probebly not cutting edge because of the scale of the game.
It simply doesn't work if you want to make a RTS with this scale and amazing grafics, no PC would be able to hold it.

I'm still waiting for my Download to finnish......can't wait.

Big disappointment when it comes to graphics, the building mechanism, war and the list goes on. Did not find anything amazing, the maps look so empty like big areas with just the common things:watter, trees, small mountains....its like playing Empire Earth....WTF???

First impressions are deceptive lasa, the game has unimaginable depth and more features then I could list, alone it would take you weeks with many hours of play to really find out what the game is like. You obviously have no clue as of now, I suggest you get the tutorials off fileplanet for starters.....

I'm very sad to say I'm not impressed. The interface is very disjointed, and really a mess to work around. I'm running a BFG Geforce 7800 OC 256meg card and it still looks very rough and unpolished. It has a few neat ideas, but this is a big letdown overall. I had really high hopes, too

Runs on my p4 2.8ghz with 1 gig ram, 128 meg Radeon 9800 Pro in 1024 x 768 with everything turned to low or off. Runs smoothly that is. I wouldn't run it on anything slower, as if you get more than two factions on a map it'll become unplayable.

Of course, it kicks bottom on my E6600 with x1950 Pro behind me.
