Burning Crusade downloadable

Blizzard offers World of Warcraft players new upgrade without need to put on pants, leave house.

Considering Blizzard's World of Warcraft expansion pack The Burning Crusade sold 2.4 million copies in its first day on sale, it's entirely possible some gamers haven't been able to find a copy at their local game retailers. Regardless of the game's popularity at brick-and-mortar stores, WOW addicts can now get their Burning Crusade fix without having to drive to the store, much less get up out of their favorite office chairs.

Blizzard today updated the official World of Warcraft Web site with news that The Burning Crusade is now available as a direct online upgrade for the game. To download the game, players just need to log in to their World of Warcraft accounts, click the Burning Crusade "download now" button, and pay the $39.99 price of admission with a credit card.

Well if they're charging $40 for the download they'd better let you download directly from high bandwidth servers and not the POS blizz downloader

I think it can be a good thing for people living in another country. I moved to china some time ago, and was happy to be able to d/l half life 2. As long as there are no restrictions based on the country from where u wanna download it....

In my country it costs like 70 bucks so paying 40 it's way better in my case, anyway I started the download, had to close it, resume it and started over but it started to download a slim version, anybody knows the difference with the full version download, besides 1.18 GB against 2.05 GB

Nice. I spent a month unable to upgrade because I was traveling outside the US (with a few boring days where BC would have been nice) and the day I get back home, they do this.

stevetwo. if you buy the game from a store you get the nice box with it etc. when you format your pc you dont have to wait hours to download the burning crusade...you just install from disc. if you lose the discs you can just download from the site and log in. ill stick by my "buying from store" views :-)

$40 from home is cheaper than $40 from the store. No gas, parking, headaches, etc, which could easily end up costing $10 just to pick up the game.

If I didn't bust ass to get a collectors edition I would DEFINATELY get the digital download over a cheap retail box. I like my 2142 digital download because I'll never be able to lose the disk. New computer (like just recently) just log-in and re-download. I make an assumption that Blizzard works the same way. You may not have a box and a disk, but you also can't lose a disk you don't have.

Just don't forget your account name I guess. :-D

If you don't have BC by now, you're probably not going to a store to buy it. Everyone playing WoW seems to have the expansion already, so what's the point? Putting it online AFTER the release: smart marketing. That's why they are rolling in $$$$$$$$$.

Blizzard is NOT forced by a contract with B&Ms. They can sell the game online at whatever price they want to, but obviously by doing that they'll piss off 80% of their main buyers so it's common sense to apply the same charges!

You nailed it ImperialPanda, they are forced by contract with the Brick and Mortars to charge an equal price online. This will be a problem until online distribution becomes more popular than retail stores, which is still a few years away. Either way, just another number that the NPD won't be counting with their archaic system.

  • ImperialPanda

    Posted Feb 2, 2007 10:36 am PT

They need to charge $40 because retail giants and distributors demand it.

They are charging premium price for a download? Blizzard should at least give a discount since the game doesn't come in the package it comes in when bought from the store.

I agree with nandosupes. If they don't supply the disc, manual and packaging then the price should be lower because of the related mfg expenses are not there. Not to mention the brick n' mortar retail markup isn't there either. So, when all is said and done I'd rather buy from a retailer. I get something I can put my hands on. Unless the companies start giving incentive for me to DL a game... like lower prices or exclusive content...

this is pretty cool, but my only complain is,why are they charging you 40 bucks when theres no packaging, instructions, and discs?,29.99 sounds more reasonable, guess because the expansion just came out recently.

they always do that... I've never seen a game cheaper for download than in stores... its pretty much a ripoff.

It's because youre using their servers, which cost a lot of money, and youre buying a game, which also cost them a lot of time and money to make.

    rwbojorquez Said:
"Just go to best buy and buy it there and get the box for $40. for online it should be cheaper." it should be, but fact is, they don't have to sell it cheaper. in fact they can probably charge more for the privilage of not having to leave the house. its sad, but thats business

why do u guys even waist ur time typing about WOW, or complaining that the game sucks. There are 8 million people who play this game and 50% of that have no life, i know that because i go to school with one of those people. and if Blizzard comes out with a idea not to leave ur house or in other words never get seen by people, there download it and those no live play WOW because thats the only thing they have.

  • SulaMoon

people, I know it sound stupid to you and all, why not buy the whole thing and bla bla bla.. BUt have in mind a lot of ppl from outside the game official covered area plays to, and its a real pain to get a box (aka import one). The game ends too expensive, since somes places you end paying amost 120% of retail prices as import taxes, plus, more then 1 month to arrive and all that. There ARE some customers that would really apreciate simply being able to download it, and for RETAIL price, not some overinflated prices because of irrational taxes.

Yes, it's lame that downloadable games cost the same (or more if it's on sale at retail), but keep in mind that blizzard (or valve) don't necessarily have any choice. Their agreements with their publishers/distributors probably say they cannot "undercut" the retail price.

  • hepcat00

    Posted Feb 1, 2007 6:20 pm PT

lame.....so you pay the same price as the retail package. this *should* be LESS expensive as you don't get any packaging, shipping costs....so you are just paying for *convenience* which most likely (as someone else stated) will be a long, slow download on overloaded servers as everyone who hasn't bought the retail version attempts to download at the same time....which is convenient how??
