Tokyo Game Show adds extra day

This year's TGS will run for four days instead of the usual three; expected to be even bigger than last year.

In stark contrast to the downsizing of the Electronic Entertainment Expo, the Tokyo Game Show continues to grow each year, with the 2006 event having featured 148 different companies exhibiting some 650 game and software titles.

This year, the trade show will be expanding once again. Japan's Computer Entertainment Supplier's Association has released the first official details of the 2007 Tokyo Game Show, which will run from September 20-23.

TGS usually runs for three days over a weekend, with Friday traditionally being a business day for press and industry only. This year there will be two business days, Thursday 20 and Friday 21 September. This is so that those within the industry can gather more data and talk to more exhibitors, which has presumably become difficult to do in a single day as the show continues to expand.

I agree with BurntToast. E3 was in the coma when they downsized. Now they're practically dead with TGS adding an extra day.

E3 is dead. Why won't you folks just realize that and get over it?

I understand it's your dream to go and all that jazz, but coming from someone who's been there multiple years (and yes, legitimately through my own credentials)... it's REALLY not all that special. 2003 was decent, 2005 was great since MSFT had the guts to show the 360, 2006 would have been a complete disaster if it wasn't for MSFT and Nintendo. Overall, 2006 was boring.

Usually I went for all three days for the full day (driving up from OC each time), but 2006 I went one day and was so completely bored that I decided not to go on the last day. The only highlight was not having to wait in line to see/play the Wii... that was pretty much it.

It's dead... get over it already.

    Posted Feb 1, 2007 10:03 am PT

Okay, thanks for thinking of the salarymen and not the children. But no matter how big it gets, there's still no Nintendo, and only half of the exhibitors have any commercial interest to people outside Asia. (Shameless plug: See my blog entry for impressions and photos aplenty from TGS2006, including a two-day mostly-narrated booth tour. )

I actually think that's a smart move for the organizers of TGS to do. Unfortunately, that still doesn't do anything for the relevance of TGS to the rest of the international market. It's heavily Japan-centered.

If only the organizers of E3 were smart enough to take notes. Heck, I'd prefer a copycat than nothing at all.

  • CapcaS

    Posted Feb 1, 2007 6:22 am PT

I think they should bring back the E3 we all know and love. It's symbolic to how the video games industry runs things.

Besides, a little over the top never hurt anybody.

Anyways, to get on topic, I think another business day for TGS is a great thing. More previews and coverage on upcoming games for us.

    Woo.
