PSP gets firmware update, Killzone demo

Sony tweaks system's Web browser and sound setting options, promises more trial versions of games on the way.
By Brendan Sinclair, GameSpot
Posted Jan 30, 2007 4:13 pm PT

Sony is constantly tweaking and tuning the firmware for its PlayStation Portable, and today the company announced the availability of another update to its handheld system. According to Sony, PSP Firmware 3.10 includes a "conserve memory" option for the system's Internet browser and an automatic volume adjuster in the sound settings to compensate for differing audio levels in movies, games, music, and other sources.

In addition to the firmware, Sony released a 25.4MB demo for the PSP third-person shooter Killzone: Liberation and promised that more first- and third-party demos would be released on an ongoing basis. In the coming weeks, Sony expects to offer demos for Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror and SOCOM: US Navy SEALs Fireteam Bravo 2. To download the demo, check out the PSP Web site.

They just made the new Firmware because the old one was hacked...
Sony was afraid that everybody would downgrade and use homebrew... True that!

Looks like Sony is finaly stepping up it's support for the PSP. This means that the DL service we heard rumors about can't be fare off. I just hope they include the PSone, to PSP games with it like they are doing for the PS3.

Are you guys downloading the game with the firmware update?? I downloaded it sepreatley and it works.

For those that can't get Killzone to work, go here:

https://download.eu.playstation.com/shop/catalogue.htm?locale=en_GB

Search for the game and download it from there and it should work.

Funny how a new firmware showed up just days after someone cracked the last version of the firmware. At least this time they are hiding the security updates behind some type of actual improvements (albeit, small ones.)

When you're downloading the KZ demo, it's only downloading the EBOOT file... there is also the DRM file that needs to be downloaded as well, but I guess Sony forgot to link the file on the page. Hope there's a fix for it soon...

I like updateing because there was a time when you would have to by a whole new product in order to get better features. Imagine if Sony just said "screw it ,lets just make another version of PsP and they will all just have to buy a new one". I think that would make me mad. i look forward to the updates for PsP and Ps3 ,its like ..it just keeps getting better

People like different things. I read a lot of comparisons between DS and PSP...well I have both of them and I find myself actively playing both all the time. Last week I was spending time with Kingdom of Paradise, switching to my mp3s and UMD movies when I got to work, now I'm playing Final Fantasy III (which I enjoy controlling 100% with the stylus) and I don't have a problem doing that on the bus or train. Open minded gamers with enough resources should really consider getting both. Then the arguments will cease. Of course, neither system is for everyone, but both have something to offer.

The upgrades are annoying though. I bought my PSP with the purpose of playing it the way it was meant to be played, by buying UMDs and playing them on the system. Being forced to upgrade every time I want to play something new is irritating...but I understand there are ways around that. I was intent upon maintaining my integrity and being an "honest" PSP owner, but the hacking possibilities are tempting...

I hated PSP updates.

I mean, isn't there a law somewhere saying that you dont NEED to update if you dont want to??
I hated having to insert a game, to HAVE to update, i was happy not having the internet options and stuff there... I was happy how the interface worked on the day that I had it.

When I insert a new game, it always said "you need to update" and stuff like that. And you couldnt play the game because it needed to update.

How come the DS doesnt need to update with every big commecial release?! I hate Sony updates, I feel like I am not "with the times". Maybe I liked things how they are, warts and all. I hate having to be forced into updating.

Its like windows constantly reminding me to update and restart, I have my OWN anti-virus. I dont want windows to get all updatey and stop some old software from working, I managed to finally get Transport Tycoon working after all these years, I updated, then it didnt work.... ever (no sound then either...).

I fully believe that the product should run as it is on day one, and run games like you expect it to without changing a thing. Ps2, Ps1 never had to do this, no other console does this... I hate being forced into having an internet browser and stuff on my psp. Which is why I sold them.

I feel much more comfortable with the DS, gaming should never need updating on consoles, PC's yes because there are different drivers and graphics cards that need sorting out. However, one console is always the same, why you NEED to update to play a new game baffles me.

I agree. This Killzone demo is generally a nice little shooter to roll around with. Even though the topdown view can be a little too "zoomed out", it still has the core run 'n run shooter gameplay ^_^

@Hoverboy, I just dont think I'll play it enough to justify owning both of them. Like I said I have 3 games to finish on the DS but havent touched them or had any desire to. Yeah the DS does have more rpgs but I got Kingdom of Paradise and imported Tales of Eternia to keep me busy til more come out. I also hate the fact that some of the games on the DS are virtually unplayable by left-handed people. I had to sell Mario Hoops and Lost Magic for that reason alone. Lost Magic was a joke for leftys. How are you suppose to hold the left shoulder button down and draw at the same time?

Try out Killzone for the PSP! It's probably one of the best games designed with the PSP controls in mind.

Best shooter I've played since a long time.

So many people neglecting their PSP's and I am one of them.
The new update and 'Killzone' demo have reuinted my affinity for this little gem.
Move over my DS lite, the PSP is back.

One new GREAT feature that I have been waiting for is the new sound option
'DYNAMIC NORMALIZER' ... it's awesome. It really does boost low recorded sounds (ie low mixed Dialogue on UMD films) as I have a quite a few UMD's in my collection (yes I am one who bought alot of em). I finally have to turn the volume down now. Wohoo!!!!

@TOSgamer10:

If you own both a PSP and a DS, why sell your DS? Can you not own both? I do... Best of both worlds. It's not like there aren't good games coming out for it, because there are quite a few lined up this year. And as for the PSP: hope you're not wanting to play an RPG right now. Hopefully Obilvion fixes that, but as it stands the existing batch are OK at best.
