Wii, Wario win ToyAward

Nintendo's latest honored for innovation at International Toy Fair in Trend and Lifestyle category.

While the Wii has already received numerous awards from within the gaming industry, Nintendo's latest system is winning accolades from the outside world as well. The latest such award comes from the Spielwarenmesse International Toy Fair in Nürnberg, which runs February 1-6.

The one-two punch of the Wii and Nintendo's WarioWare: Smooth Moves walked away with a ToyAward in the Trend and Lifestyle category, according to the Toy Fair's official site. More than 150 companies submitted a total of 223 products for consideration in the 2007 ToyAwards, but the field was narrowed to eight category-winning entrants.

"The jury chose the product because the play concept of Wii tends to encourage playing PC games in groups instead of alone," the site explained. "In addition, the product not only appeals to player types with an affinity to PCs but also to new age groups--a real lifestyle theme. The innovative controller--for more fun and movement--and the Wario Wear: (sic) Smooth Moves represent a return to the more classic games in the game console segment."

Other winners included a remote-controlled Lego bulldozer in the Technical and Electronics category, while Pleo--a virtual dinosaur from the inventor of Furby--took home the Special Innovation Award.

HAHA, lots of fools leaving stupid msg's again. UnderThelce - you hit the nail on the head. Good to see the forums aren't completely filled with uneducated opinionated idiots.
Nintendo has done a fantastic job in my mind. The first generation games have given me and my mates many hours of entertainment. And isn't that what gaming is all about - entertainment? Nintendo - YOU ROCK!! Keep up the good work!

To all the people posting things such as 'teh wii is jsut a toy LOL", i tell you: you are right. The Wii is a toy. My laptop is a toy. My 3D modeling program that I am using is a toy. To my dad, his cars are his toys. The Wii's a fantastic toy, and if you are too old to play with toys, you have died a little inside.

"The Wii is nothing but a toy" - Paul_ThGreat.
No, really? It's a toy?!? Why hasn't anyone told me this yet?!?
Of course it's a toy, that's what they're going for. Are you saying that the Playstation 3 isn't a toy? It has the word "play" in it's name. Do you make a living off of playing games, Paul?
Nintendo has made a system that is more fun than the other 2 systems, so that makes it a toy? Ok, you have a good time "at work" then.

enoslives7 :"the wii is just a toy...it should leave complicated things like video games to real companies like Sony"

Wait, does Sony even MAKE games? What actual game has Sony made recently? I remember that they were making sports games under the "989" name, but I think those all lost out to the various EA franchises. Making good games is complicated, but I don't think Sony has to worry about that...because they don't make good games. That's why Sony is screwed, if the PS3 flops and they lose a ton of 3rd Party Support. What games will there be for the PS3 in that case...what exclusives. Nintendo will always survive because they make GREAT games. Actually, it was the games that kept them afloat during the N64 - GameCube years when many 3rd parties ditched them. Nintendo always has and always will make great games. What do you expect from a toy-maker that started in the 19th Century?

A video game is pretty much a kind of toy - you play with it. What else do you do with toys and games besides play with them?

Anyway, I found that the Wii is a really family and friend oriented console - it's hard to find people that don't want to at least try the games out. I was hoping that the Toy Fair would spell WarioWare right.

I still can't find a Wii system locally!!!! When I got shut out of the pre-orders, I thought "great, I'll probably have to wait till March" - now that seems to be the case, though I heard Nin is upping their production by 1million a month!

    "timts
after warioware inc, warioware twisted, warioware touch, it still gets rewards? man, we need some 'innovation' here."

    From Dictionary.com
"the act of innovating; introduction of new things or methods."

I bring your attention the word 'methods'

    From Dictionary.com
"A means or manner of procedure, especially a regular and systematic way of accomplishing something: a simple method for making a pie crust; mediation as a method of solving disputes. See Usage Note at methodology."

Do you see how you can have a game with different 'methods' for playing it? You can? Good.

Keep in mind the quote is probably from a German native tounge. The words "PC" and "computer" are virtually synonomous. And the terms "computer games" and "video games" are virtually synonomous. So to answer your sarcastic question, mike, no. The Wii is not running windows.

This is also from a toy convention, not anything like a German E3.

    Tryme01

um, consoles are dedicated PC's nowadays, that fact is not to be overlooked. I think when they relate consoles as a PC, they are correct in doing so. Example: Sony wants PS3's to be like a computer( runs linux! )and lets see, what does SCEA stand for? Sony COMPUTER ENTERTAINMENT of America! Just because it doesnt run Windows doesnt make it any less of a computer.

Computers (to the barebone definition) take input, modify that data and give an output. PCs and gaming consoles do both, so why the beef?

  • Darth_Butter

    Posted Jan 30, 2007 5:41 pm GMT

This is a pointless award. They don't even know about gaming in the least, but I guess good job Ninty.

"the play concept of Wii tends to encourage playing PC games in groups instead of alone"

proves that the people behind the awards dont know the difference between a PC and a console...
