UT 2007 renamed, 360-bound

Epic Games' once-PC-and-PS3-exclusive shooter is now headed to Microsoft's new console with a slightly tweaked title, Unreal Tournament III.

LAS VEGAS--For a while, it appeared that Epic Games had appeased both Sony and Microsoft with console exclusives. One year after it had teased audiences with some unidentified footage at the 2005 Electronic Entertainment Expo, the developer announced it was bringing Unreal Tournament 2007 to the PlayStation 3 as well as the PC. Given the legendary stature of the Unreal series, that news appeared to trump Epic's deal with Microsoft to bring an all-new game, Gears of War, exclusively to the Xbox 360.

Now, it appears Epic has had a change of heart. Thursday night at the 2007 Midway Gamers' Day at the Hard Rock Casino, Epic vice president Mark Rein swaggered onto the stage to announce two things. First, that Unreal Tournament 2007 will henceforth be known as Unreal Tournament III. "The new name is to reflect the fact that this game is the next generation of the Unreal series, based on the Unreal Engine 3," said Rein, brimming with confidence.

Then Rein dropped a bombshell, announcing that Unreal Tournament III will also arrive on the Xbox 360 when it hits stores later this year. "The 360 is a platform that we've had a little bit of success on," joked Rein, referencing Gears' record-setting sales. As of last week, Gears of War had sold 3 million units worldwide, making it the fastest-selling Xbox 360 game of all time.

    What an idiot... i have both consoles, and i like them both (well ps3 is better but wont be leavin my precious 360's games), actually, ps3 games have an average of 13gb in disc, so it does need em, it mught be becuase of the HD sound and 1080p resolution... AND the one that might blow up is 360, thats not a secret (speakin with self-experience), and techanlly speakin, 360 specs are LOWER than ps3's. omg i hate that people close their mind and believe what they want, if u cant afford a ps3 then just shut up.

    @Kingofgamez the 360 is in a walled garden as Microsoft call it so the machine is safer from malicious software i assume ? also the ps3 web browser is very limited it don't work like google and co you have to be precise as to where you want to go , none of that lets see if the web can find me the answers to blah blah blah it wont do , i am surprised that sony didn't get involved with a big search engine supplier though for the ps3 and as for ut3 is it like the others ? eg play for a hour then left for weeks ?

    I am no fanboy. These are both great systems. But as of the present time, the 360 has everthing going for it. Sure the ps3 has a web browser and a dvd player built in. but the sole reason most people get a video game console is just that, to play video games. of course the 360 has more games, its been out way longer than the ps3. but in the first year and a half the 360 was out, it released better games than the ps3 in its first year and a half. But the ps3 is still a great system. and it also confuses me as to why the 360 does not have an internet browser seeing as its from microsoft, makers of the largely used internet explorer.

    but back to the topic at hand, im glad they decided to bring Unreal tournament III to the 360. it was a smart move by epic, and UT is an amazing game.

    does ps3 have bioshock, NO. Does ps3 have halo 3, NO. does ps3 have Crackdown, NO. Does ps3 have Mass Effect, NO. Does ps3 have gears of War, NO. Does the ps3 have Shadowrun, NO. Does the ps3 have Deadrising, NO. Xbox 360 is a LOT better then ps3.

    Actually amulbocus, the 360 can view DivX now, along with several other formats.

    Also, I don't see how having more games is invalid, the PS3 was under development for approximately the same amount of time. The fact is that Sony either did not make dev kits available to Devs, or they did and Devs chose to work on the 360 anyways.

    Everyine seems to knock the ps3 at the moment. Does the 360 have web browser - NO. Can the 360 play any other video files except MPEG, NO (PS3 handles almost everything including Divx/ Xvid HD. Can user created PC mods work on the 360 - No (PS3 is open GL, not proprietry like the 360). Can the 360 upscale normal DVDs to 1080p - NO. Is the 360 easy to upgrade - NO. Can the 360 OS be changed and tweaked like the XMB, NO. Also the argument for the 360 to have more games is invalid as its been around for 3 years, compared to 1.5 years for the PS3. PS3 looks better, is more powerful, and has far more scope for the future than the 360 which is at its peak right now, and will only go downhill.

    @ o0nemesis0o its the pc version wich was finished first .....
    ported to PS3
    and ps3 got more trouble that the Xbox360 does
    ok the Graphic card is more then good enough
    but sadly the CPU cant keep up .... and stalls
    this is where the xbox360 got the upperhand cause the CPU doesnt
    stall at anytime during hard gameplay

    it does break down though .... ( 3rd 360 by now )

    psychoflex at least try to remember what system the game is being developed for in the first place. A "really bad framerate?" Hardly reasonable, considering the system is far more capable. Sure games recently haven't been holding up compared to Xbox 360 but those same games lagging for Ps3 owners are usually ports, whereas, if anything, this game will be ported to the 360. That doesn't bode well for the 360's frame rate, if anything at all.

    Swift 18 I hope the you have a capable pc because the ps3 is going to have a really bad frame rate or at less not as good as pc & xbox360.

    as for my guess, UTIII is the snack before the dinner of what is to come in 2009....GOW2 for 360. Besides, epic would not give up an ip on one console just to move it to a hardware that shares more problems than any other of sony's consoles, especially in its gaming archive. Anybody who looks at the sony library are just pointing and laugh. Sony has failed to bring forth a decent stratagy for the PS3 to conquer that of xbox360, let alone the king of selling, Nintendo. Hardware never comes on top when software is no where to be found. Almost half of the ps3 library are ports, witch shed sales between console share holders, and multifamily does not give a choice to which console will survive, but ultimately, which console shall not. If the same game sells more on one system than the other, it is pry because either the developer, or the porter company did a better job on their coding than the other, but royalties are spread to those whose game is on what system.

    Uhhhmmmm... Swift 18, Midway and Epic Games were acutally working on the Xbox 360 version during the same amount of time as the PS3 and the Xbox 360 version is actually closer to being done in production due to Sony's Sixaxis Controller. Just to clear things up. I still feel UT III will be fricking awesome.

    Sony has a tendency to upgrade their hardware so maybe they will with the cell. I think it'd be cool to see them do something like have you send your ps3 in for a price and they upgrade it or something. But as for the 360 switch over, I don't think it's gonna end well as the game has been in development for the ps3 and pc for a long time now. and now they are going to try to port it off this late in the game and keep the same release and actually earlier then the ps3. Alot of companies have tried this before and it always ends in tears for the gamers. Because as it would have to be a PC port they will have to do alot of changes to work with the odd number of cpu cores so idk it'll be intresting but i think ill stick the pc or ps3 versions

    i think it's terrible people taking glee or being misserable that a title isn't exclusive and it will the the "Death" of one console To be hoenst there are many all time classics that gamers will never play because their head is so far up their ...... that they won't consider that ALL consoles have AAA titles .. ALL .. that even includes some really poorly selling machines like the Atari Jaguar , 3DO , Saturn ....

    Good games are good games ... all consoles are just machines and no matter how powerful good designers can make good games for any them

    BAsically the cell processor is the best, but Sony took the first one created and put it into the PS3, the SPE (which you will read about) have 256KBs , What sony, should of done was waited for the next version that has 2MBs for SPE. Also the processor talking to the video cards has major issues. But can it be fixed, ofcourse through writing programs, but the developers are yerars away from that, as you will read. So you the next 3 or so years, Xbox has the best graphics, then Sony will take over the lead, but I am sure Bill will come out with a new version of xbox by then.

    He says it right there in the quote, UT 3 is the flagship title for the Unreal Engine 3. Epic invests vast amounts of cash into the Unreal engine as a _cross-platform_ middleware, so it would be idiotic not to release it on all capable platforms. This (or any other game using this engine) will never be developed from the ground up for a particular platform, it is based on the middleware. The platform specific tweaking that will occur for the PC, 360, and PS3 versions will happen regardless and won't meaningfully detract from the overall quality of the game. Don't get me wrong, there will be a 'best' version of the 3.. but the quality for one version won't suffer because the other versions exist.

    Gimme a break. If it was built ground up for the 360 it would look and play far better then if it took "full advantage" of the PS3 hardware. You guys are just mad because PS3 is losing exclusives. Face it many games will have to do this because there are so few PS3's on the market that Developers will have a hard time recouping their losses in making the games. MG4 is next I bet. Although even if it comes to 360 I won't get it. It looks boring. I played all the way through Sons of Liberty and that was just lame. The plot became so convoluted and retarded by the end.

    Am i dreaming can this be happening lol sony ps3 goodbye, I think sony forgot all peoplee care about is money rather saving money from not buying a ps3 or getting more by making games for the 360 as well because marketing to over 11 million 360 owners or trying to sell to a little over 2 million ps3 owners mmmmmmmm not hard to chose. I love my 360 and i was playing "real next-gen" a year before the ps3 and got more out of gaming because of it ps3 fans are like the people who regret there whole life i wish i saved that 200 dollars from buying a 360 and invest it or save it, or i wish i did better in school last year. read, and study before buying anything for 600 dollars do not be a fool people and be loyal to anyone taking your money.

    I won't buy a Xbox 360 for a couple of years. But it is stinking seeing all these PS3 exclusives drop into other boats. Which, I bet means less time spent on perfecting the game for the PS3's hardware and more time to spread it across all systems. What once could have been great is now bland and uninteresting.

    Mindless Run-n-Gun is what UT was all about, originally. I know it's hard to take it from someone you don't know, but that was back in my college days, and I played UT way too much.

    ...was 40th in the world ranks for Last Man Standing.

    And you know what the strategy was? Kill them first. And learn to aim with every weapon.

    That was it. I hope it stays like that too, because not every game should be a strategy...not every game should bend your brain.... once in a while, gamers just need to frag everything in sight, and give their reflexes a really good run for their money. Besides, if you all wanted strategy in your games so bad, then we'd see you on the Yahoo! Games section, playing Chess against other online gamers....not waiting for another shooter to come out on the 360.

    I really hope that more of a strategy element is introduced and the mindless run and gun is toned down for this new incarnation. Otherwise I really don't have much interest.

    By the way, great news that it's coming to the Xbox 360. The Xbox really seems to be the console of choice for FPS players and, well, releasing it on the system just seems to make sense. Bad news for the PS3, but then again what hasn't been? I wouldn't be surprised to see this dropped for the PS3 altogether after the comments that Epic made about it.

    It makes sence to move it onto the 360. It makes sence to make a game on a popular system, where the games can actually sell. Frankly, I think the Sony should start re-making more games for the PS2 for a while, until they can figure out a way to get the PS3 selling better.

    It seems this time around, the 360 and the Wii will be the powerhouses this time around. Microsoft is coming out with quality games, Gears, Unreal III, and HOPEFULLY Halo 3 (Im not impressed with what I heard on Halo 3 so far). Nintendo is adding innovation to gaming, which brings a lot of fun into games.

    Microsoft, congrats. As for Sony, the PS2 had great games. If the PS3 can get its act together, the PS3 can have great potential. The way it seems, thats a pretty big IF.

    Damn… Sony is losing terrain so fast that it looks like they don’t want the PS3 to be a success. Losing almost all the cool exclusive to the Xbox make you think they really want that. The axis control does not have rumble that is bad sign to Sony too. It is better to play the games on the PS2 than the PS3. Sony has to wake up or is going to be the fall of the titan. Mayor adjust has to be made to make the console a success. I see it this way.
    1. Not to lose any more exclusive to the Xbox.
    2. Add the rumble to the new axis control (swallow the pride)
    3. Depending on the condition lower the price (I like that very much)
    4. Make really innovated games.
    5. Add the basic accessories to the package like the cable for HDTV.

    I buy first the Wii and let me tell you one thing. It may not be in high definition but it is fun to play like that and the graphics are not bad at all. I wait for the 3 consoles to be out before I decide in witch one to buy. Of course The Wii win because the review and the price. I will buy the other console but I will wait. The way I see it, I think it is going to be the Xbox. Reason that is easy… 1. Price. You can buy later the HD drive or blue ray depend on who wins the war.
    2. All the games are coming to Xbox so what for the PS3 left. It all came down to the games.
    They are more reasons but who cares.

    Maybe the 50% loss profits wake them (SONY) up and make them react on what’s going on with the console war. They are losing big time.
