Sony's Harrison to keynote GDC

President of Sony's Worldwide Studios, Phil Harrison, to address attendees with "Game 3.0: Developing and Creating for the 3rd Age of Video Games."

CMP Media, the organizers of the Game Developers Conference, today announced that Phil Harrison, president of worldwide studios at Sony Computer Entertainment, will give the opening keynote address to this year's conference.

Harrison will give a lecture titled "Game 3.0: Developing and Creating for the 3rd Age of Video Games." The talk will focus on "the entertainment, creative, and commercial opportunities presented by connected communities of players and developers."

GDC 2007 takes place March 5-9 at San Francisco's Moscone Center. Harrison's speech will take place on Wednesday, March 7, at 10:30 a.m. Earlier this week, GDC 07 announced that Nintendo's game guru, Shigeru Miyamoto, will present a keynote address, titled "A Creative Vision," on Thursday, March 8.

    I figure that the reason why Sony get so much flak is simply because they have been so consistently arrogant, even with faliures abound, they still hold their nose up.
    Now it would be biased of me to of only said that, and then left it at that, which is why this situation seems hard on the outside, but inside is a story much too complex. In the end, it SEEMS like everyone disses Sony with every news column - And they will be right to do so, its their own point of view.

    Reasons why Sony are getting so much flak, is one mainly of false promises. At first, the ps3 was supposed to have a MASSIVE hard drive, 2 hdmi outputs, several gigabit ethernet ports (not just ONE, but SEVERAL) ALL exclusive games which prove 360 and anything else wrong.
    Generally their hype, which worked with the ps2, it seems like the public have figured out their sales-pitch, and now it seems arrogant and annoying because the competition has made clearer choices this time around.

    However, instead of adapting with the times (i.e the press) Sony reps, etc, say things like "we don't look at what our competition is doing" and "I didn't know anything about Nintendo's launch numbers... ahem..."

    Then, announcing tilty support at the last minute, and then selling it like it is a revolutionary idea when before, they slated motion sensoring as being a "gimmik".
    All of their conferences have said one thing, and presented another. Although this ads variety to the Ps3-story, when Sony do not back up what they say ; in the gaming community it is almost as serious as a politician not keeping to what they say.

    You see, Ps3 isn't JUST a console, it is an investment. Sony are selling it to you like you NEED it and everything else is, well, crappy. It is an act that is hard to swallow for some, because now a lot of people are appreciating a bit of healthy competition.

    Some people HATE microsoft, but like Nintendo AND Sony. Some people love Microsoft and Nintendo but HATE sony. ETC ETC.
    With Microsoft they are promoting things like "nintendo are our toughest competition", they don't say things like "motion sensoring is a gimmik, its all about multiple processing and free online! Bluray! Bluray!".
    Nintendo are able to exist with Microsoft in the market, as in, Microsoft sales news doesn't bother Nintendo fans, because two consoles are heading in two seperate directions. Microsoft really hasn't stuck to any "everyone else is obsolete" statements.

    However when Microsofts sales are posted up, you will get a bunch of ps3 zealots saying "360 sux, its not true next gen". WHY? It is because that is how Sony is marketing their product.

    For any console to be designed to have EVERYTHING, purely to crush the competition - it is going to cause a lot of bickering. And, this is why a lot of Sony news gets negative replies. Sony has a bayonette on the end of it's strategy, but then a lot of the time you realise that it wasn't sharp at all, it was a small piece of wood or something.
    As a result, when Sony say things like "the next generation doesnt start until WE say it does", with a comment like that you would expect results.

    Then, instead of Sony standing up and admitting misstakes or what have yous, out comes the "this is a bluray product, of COURSE you will get shortages and lacklustre support for the format, its NEW!!".
    This is where people say "oh, could of told me that before couldnt you!".

    You can see how it has ended up as every Sony news topic getting a negative buzz. This is just how it is, some people love to see the smug fall down low. Others just dont want to be cheated.
    Sony have a good chance to stop being so smug, and just show us what it is REALLY all about. Not saying things like "with the ps3 ANYTHING is possible, ANYTHING!" and then show off some fake videos and all that, and grabbing some "ps2 is very successful" figures out for the sake of looking good.

    Nintendo and Microsoft's presentations, things that their reps have to say generally hold a lot of truth. You can't deny this- check out the conferences from E3. If anyone didn't laugh at the Giant Enemy Crab, there is something wrong there.
    The thing is with Sony and its conferences, they NEVER admit that they did a silly move. When the competition acts in a different way, we expect our "beloved" company to act in a proper way. Which is why they come across as being smug, things have changed.

    I'm assumming Atari to Sega Saturn was the 1st age. PS1 to Xbox 360 is the 2nd age. Phil Harrison is implying that PS3 is the beginning of the third age.

    kinda funny huh? Dreamcast was easier to develope for, had an easier and cheaper format, 1 year headstart, Best graphics when PS2 Launched, was cheaper, had a better game selection at first and lost year 2. Of course thats not at all what this gen is like huh? lol!!

    Well at least I'm not the only one whos getting sick of it or has noticed how way out of hand its getting. Look below me, 2 pages of comment knocking Phil and he hasn't even said anything yet. God, just wait til he opens his mouth. They're sure to find something that really urks them.

    One thing about these company CEO's, I've said it before but no one listens. Whenever they talk, its just advertising. They are just trying to pimp their product. Take it with a grain of salt. Since when does advertising have to be taken as gospel? Or every word or phrase stand up to constant scrutiny only to be recall 2 years later because it contradicted another statement some other CEO said. You'se sound like polititions with your forever jumping on every liitle inconsistancy and browny point scoring. Its supposed to be about games and having fun. I have an XBLive account and I hardly use it because to be honest I'd hate to hear what half of you sound like when your in the heat of battle. Its time to grow up people. Its no wonder a lot of people still regard games as just for kids. They probably read this forum.

    Why is it that a Sony article gets cut down so fast with bias opinions?
    It should've been known by now that its a matter of taste of games that decides what system we like. Everything but shooters will end you up with Nintendo or Sony and FPS will pick the 360. *Seriously, if you said something about Bluedragon looks good...you haven't played the first class RPG's sony delivers or need to get away from FPS way tooo badly-without going to sony.*

    Isn't it funny that x-box fans bash quicker than Sony fans? Do we know why you guys bash so quickly? Yeah. Its something to do with Bill Gates plus a Halo...then those 5 games each individual likes. That creates a hatred towards them, since you bought that overheating-cooling fan required system. *I take that back. You can always put a fan near it so you don't have to buy the cooling fan.*

    Please, just for the sake of wisdom, provide proof of your bashings of Sony! Don't just spit crap out with nothing but what Bill Gates wants you to believe. Provide unbias articles-PS3's 200$ dif price-something! BTW: If you have Xlive, you will be paying more for your system then what we sony guys did! Add a cooling fan and some nice batteries for your controller because your controller doesn't register with your system-and your going to be paying for that stuff untill you stop investing in it! Nice loop fans! *I didn't include headphones because we have to get our own as well...*

    So true. I'm just about ready to give up Gamespot which is a shame because I like the info, mostly. Fanboys are sucking the fun out of gaming. I know fanboys of any breed suck but its mostly the XBFB's complaining constantly about everything PS3. I guess they have nothing better to talk about, let alone anything better to do. I'm really dreading Monday when Gamespot reports (late) that UT3 is on X360 now. Really, I dont give a damn about this game (and god knows XB could use another shooter) but its just all the "PS3's dying and sucks cos I said so in bad english" stuff that going to follow the news. Maybe I should just sleep that day so I dont hear the crying babies. Oh well, at least I'll be enjoying my PSWii360.

    To ps3 fans: Look at it this way, by March we'll start to have the fun that of 360 fanboys would never have. And by Christmas, we'll be the ones getting the revenge because those 360 fanboys will become the biggest hypocrites since they'll pick up the ps3 when they get bored as **** with their scifi games that Bill aka biggest nerd on earth made. Let them have their fun because later on in the year, we'll be having it non-stop. There will be nothing for xbots to talk **** anymore and they will actually have to get a life.....what a sight that'll be. They're actually going to have to get a life.....wow....that's scary.

    oh I cant STAND Phil Harrison. He reminds me of a Mobile phones salesman, you know "if you buy it now, its the cheapest anywhere in the world, it wont price drop for a long time". So, you buy the phone for like £200.

    Then, 2 months later he is there trying to sell that same phone to someone else for half the price saying "its a phone thats always been in a price-drop range".
    You know, hes that salesman who can sell ANYTHING.

    I remember the conferences that he held... so whats the ps3 all about? "Shopping" as he neatly put it. Also, he likes to think that Sixaxis is the only console with this feature, because no consoles have the name "sixaxis".
    He's like one of those lawyers, you know, the smarmy ones which can find two words and get someone sued for everything they have.

    ANYWAYS, I hope Sony don't mess this one up. I hope they go on about GAMES more than how connecting a psp to the world is vitally important.

    Infact, the only reason why I hate Sony press things is that they say things like "we are offering the best console, ever"... although that may be true, thats all they will say. They never mention the competition, or anything like that. Just how much they have contributed "oooh, first bluray player!"... who cares? Its a games console, I think people want to hear about this first.

    One statement which really turns me off Sony conferences is the "The Next Generation Doesn't start until WE say it does". I mean, it can't really get any worse than that.

    Oh wait... "So here is this Giant Enemy Crab..." I think that was the worst.

    Oh wait .." Real-time.. weapon change".

    Or could it be "it's risge racer.... riiiidge racerrrr!"

    OR it could be "attack its weakpoint, for..."
    What was it? "Massive Damage?". I hope Sony can look back at their previous conferences, have a bit of a laugh about it. Nintendo had a bit of a laugh about changing their name, Sony don't have to be like poker players all the time. I want to know about some games and stuff, not hear some drab about "but the ps3 will have 9 hdmi outputs" and stuff like that. This conference better be good!

    Maybe, because.. you know.. the article says it, the 3rd generation of video gaming is a new generation because of "the entertainment, creative, and commercial opportunities presented by connected communities of players and developers.".. (with possibly the seoncd being the last 3-4 generations of consols, and the 1st being arcade games) or you know.. we could just go by the title an assume generation 3= ps3, because Sony is so evil, and microsoft is such a "great, amazing, an wonderful company" ... how can you root for Microsoft... It's like rooting for Shooter instead of Happy gilmore... It's like .. shoping at wal-mart.. because its such a nice company.. and not because of its low prices.

    Just one problem with his speach. It's not the third age of video gaming. You Sony guys didn't invent video games (hell, you didn't even invent the Walkman, the thing that built your company). Just because it's the third age of PlayStation doesn't mean that gaming didn't exist before you guys showed up.

    Unlike the Sony fanboys, our eyes arent welded shut, we do look at the news for the PS3 believe it or not (At least I do, so I am speaking for myelf and anyone else similar).

    Further, meh... Likely more arrogant numbers and figures. Not only that, but I find it funny Sony speaking on game development, when the PS3 is horribly lacking in that area, including the support and tools Sony provides for such.

    Why Game 3.0 and the Third Age? Massive video gaming is actualy in its 7th generation. Game 7.0 and the 7th Age is more appropriate, Otherwise should have called it Playstioning 3.0: The 3rd Age.
